The Free Range
Scene Two: The Free Range
Roleplay Type: Horses Only

Wild Horse herds roam the wilderness of the Free Range, trying not to be captured or eaten by predators. To the North are the Great Mountains, to the East are the vast Plains and beyond that Desert. To the South is the Jungle, and to the West is the Coastline.

(Hii, and is all good here. Honestly thought you and Oak were the same account at one point. 😭🥀 Also, I'ma assume Faulla took Dakota's place as lead mare or wtv)

Faulla intently listened to Koa without turning to look at him, flicking her ear in acknowledgment. Snorting, she turned her back to the mountain side, flicking her tail as she watched Koa make his way towards the creek, dunking his muzzle into the water and pulling up aquatic plants, chewing on them contently.

Turning from viewing Koa, Faulla looked back at the herd, before venturing off toward the edge of the forest line, making sure the herd was still in view. Looking down, she lowered her head and picked a small dandelion between her teeth, chewing it happily. Small saplings had begun to sprout at the bases of the pine trees, their small leaves blowing with the wind.

(Heyy yal so sorry for being inactive, but Im kinda not feeling Dakota anymore, so im switching up my horses with a horse named Kazil, but lets say Dakota felt so ashamed she uh wandered off ehe)

Kazil stood tall, observing the vast plains, examining everything and taking it all in. It was so beautiful, it had moved something in her. She had not seen something so beautiful in a very long time, all she had seen was mountains, and forests, though those were beautiful, this was something different. It looked so...free here. There was nothing but green and more green. She took another step forward, her deep red mane flickering in the wind, the sight truly graceful and beautiful. This mare had been born with truly a beautiful color combination, not seen very often. Her mane was a strikingly dark red, yet she had a pure white tail, and her body was a mixture of red, black, and white.

Many horses from her birth herd had called her a bad omen, simply because she was born a blood red, which Kazil had though was just outright stupid. Many had thought she represented a great death, which honestly, she didn't understand how horses could be so superstitious, and let it rule over their small sick minds.

She snorted frustratedly, and continued her travels. She wanted a fresh start, and this place looked so promising. Who knows, she might even find a herd, which she knew wasn't very likely. She hadn't been in a herd in a very long time, as she had left her birth herd due to frustration. She wouldn't allow herself to be viewed as a plague, and wouldn't allow herself to be disrespected in such a way. Kazil loved herself, and loved her colors. If one sick herd were incapable of loving her, she would leave.

And that's just what she did.

She continued to walk, her tail flicking, as she looked around, when she heard a horse's whinny Eco through the plains. She looked up, and saw a more horses, a whole herd g

( I'm sorry if it was chaotic because it is part of wild horse lives with the predators) Willow would look at the foals as she would feel like she was not allowed to defend the foals from the predator and she got the worst of it but she managed to get rid of the predator and she feels like she made her sister proud but she sees that the herd is not very happy she leaves upset that the herd brushes her away since she tried to defend the foals from harm but in her mind she is proud of herself she feels like she let everyone down as she walks into the forest to cool down from the battle from the predator

(okayyyy, and yeah idk it seems chaotic T_T)

Koa stood there for some time, observing the mare curiously as the wind gently flickered through his white hair. He watched, curious on what she was doing, and why she was so alone. It wasn't normal for horses to be alone, as it provided safety, mental health, and physical well-being to be in a herd. Though he loved his herd, he often caught himself wondering what it would be like to be alone out in these beautiful plains, only having to worry about when he'd wake up and sleep, and if there were any predators near.

He snapped back to his senses, and gave the mare one last glance, wondering if shed come visit their herd, or even possibly join, before he turned and slowly walked back to the herd, and slowly approached Faulla, being careful to not startle her.

"It's a mare. I'm not sure if she's headed this way though." He said, before continuing. "It's not a predator, we're safe."

He continued to slowly walk to the creek where most of the herd was already splashing about, and grazing about the water's shore. He reached the creek and lowered his large head, and peered down, making sure to keep his head try. He smiled, when he saw little fish swimming quickly around, trying to avoid the other horses splashes.

He took a step forward, his foot sinking into the water, followed by another until he reached the deepest point, which hadn't even reached to his stomach, and he lowered his head underwater, his teeth grasping mergent plants, and he popped his head up, and ate happily. The plants that had grown in water, such as rivers and creeks had been his favorite.

He sat there for some time in the water, happily enjoying himself and his plants, alone.

(Yeahhh, they can just catch up at this point :v)

The sun crept over the mountain tops, painting bright rays of light across Faulla's slumbering form. Her eyelids slitted open, allowing her eyes to adjust to the dawning day. Shaking her mane, she hauled herself to her hooves and tested her footing before venturing out from beneath the blossoming tree.

Color was returning to the plains. Small green buds on the trees promised future flowers, while nearby, a creek gurgled softly in the quiet morning. In the distance, a small herd of deer grazed, and the faint, low chirping of birds heralded the start of the day. The scen was still, broken only by the occasional lazy shift of the awakening herd. Lowering her head, Faulla found patches of grass. Dewdrops rested on the tips of the blades, creating a small, scattered kaleidoscope of light that danced on her legs.
...
After grazing for a while, she spotted Koa out of the corner of her eye. His focus was intense, fixed on the ridge of the mountain crop; his neck craned forward, ears perked tightly. Turning her gaze, her eyes narrowed. A dark, unnatural shape moved in the distance. A predator? Human? Horse..?

Faulla moved toward the base of the mountain, watching the distant figure with cautious anticipation.

(Idk if I should even acknowledge Wonderful's response-kinda confused..)

Willow would pick up her head and look at the foals laying next to her and she would be confused of where the herd was going she would slowly get up without waking the foals and she would keep a close eye on them feeling like someone is watching her she would look the direction she feels like she is being watched and she would see a wolf looking at her and she would flare her nostrils to get it to back away but it refuses to back away she kicks the wolf as it jumps onto her back clawing her she would roll onto her back to get it off and she would neigh at the foals to get them to run and the foals would run and she would look at the wolf not really knowing what to do about it and the wolf jumps at her and latches onto her neck biting hard as she struggled to get the wolf off and she would trip over her own feet as the wolf pulls her down and she braces herself for the pain of the wolf biting until she looks and sees the herd coming back and the herd sees the wolf and Willow would start to treat her wounds from the wolf and she would start to fall asleep by her sister

(No worries, its pretty dead ;-;)

Koa slowly lifted his head, blinking sleepily. The morning air was crisp and cool, and the cent of damp grass filled his nostrils. The sun felt fairly warm on his coat, and he was very grateful for the sensation. He rose to his feet, shaking his mane while his eyes scanned the horizon.
The herd started to move as well, heading towards a distant stream. Koa felt the pull to join them, but the open field of lightly scattered flowers called him. He turned his large frame towards the field, and slowly walked through it, the soft and delicate grass brushing his hooves as he walked. He had wished he had a close companion here, but he didn't really mind being alone.

He stopped, and gazed about, grateful to have freedom. He perked his ears, listening for any distant noise, curious on what was going on today. Then, he heard a low whinny. Another horse? There had been so much going on within the herd lately, and he had found yet another horse. He turned his head in the direction of the sound, straining his eyes and ears.

He narrowed his eyes, trying desperately to see, then he caught sight of a darker blob moving in the horizon.

"What is that?" He said to himself confused because it was moving around. He took a step forward, straining even more. He had seen whatever it was gain speed, in their direction, when the wind picked up and blew over him. a mare?

(( A small one just to keep this flowing- was waiting for others to reply but they haven't been on recently))

Faulla snorted, shaking her mane before stepping out of the striped mare's space.

With a firm nod and a parting glance, she walked back to the outskirts of the herd.

The night air was cool and sharp against her hide, and she collapsed into a heap beneath her withered blossom tree.

Lowering her head, she sighed deeply, her gaze scanning the sky.

Zoey stepped carefully down the loose shape on the mountain. Sitting back on her haunches to keep herself from falling forward. She hummed as her hooves slid across the rocks, she hummed not be she liked the song, but because she couldn't panic while going down the mountain. Because panic meant injury, injury always meant death. Zoey stopped at a flat landing looking over her shoulder too see if any predators followed. Nothing did so she kept moving down the mountain. It seemed like hours passed of her picking her was across the steep rocks in the dark when the sun rose spreading rays of gold across the plains... The plains! She had finally reached the plains!! Zoey crow hopped in excitement as she broke into a long trot. Then into a canter across the grassy valley, the mare had never been so happy to run through grass, but six days of traveling the mountains would do that to a horse. After a while of playing in the grass she realized she looked quite silly. Slowing to a trot Zoey lifted her muzzle to the sky and let out a low whinny. She was okay with being a lone mare she just didn't want to intrude on any herds and have bro go back up the mountain.

As the sun set, Koa found himself a nice spot once more away from the herd, which wasn't foreign to him, but rather normal. He never really engaged with the other horses, yet he was apart of their herd. It was strange for others, and others didn't really understand. He just enjoyed his peace and quiet. He enjoyed hearing the sounds of horses speak and play around him, but he was just too awkward to join them, so he found comfort in just watching them.
He lowered his head to inspect the grass, and once he found it suitable, he slowly lowered himself to the ground. He sighed. Today had been quite interesting. He didn't understand why Dakota acted out today. She was normally fair, and just, but today she wasn't. She wants to get rid of horse just because of its background, which was odd because most of us share the same exact background as well. He didn't understand. And the tone she used. He snorted in disgust. He did not like how she used that desperate, and gentle tone with him. He had zero interest in her, especially after the little show she put on. Instead, he had his eyes on another mare....Though he'd never say anything.... he did.

Dakota found a spot on the edge of the herd, and got down and rested, letting her head rest on the soft grass. She has felt terrible about her actions, she had tried to exile a horse, simply because she feared her. She had not given her a chance, but the other horses did. The others found kindness regardless of them sharing the same fears. She sighed, and raised her gaze to the herd, her eyes falling on Koa. She admired his kindness, but why did he come and speak out this time? There had been worse disputes, yet he stayed silent and kept to himself, but this time, he didn't. He challenged her opinion, and the rest of the herd agreed. Guilt washed over her and she closed her eyes.
Dakota had secretly admired Koa, and she had never gotten the courage to approach him and start a conversation, which was ironic because she was the horse known for having courage. And the one time she had the opportunity to speak to him, he showed a slight dislike for her. She messed up bad...

From the corner of her eyes she noticed a golden creme mare inching closer, her spotted coat gleaming under the dappled sunlight, but Faulla didn't acknowledge the mare called Willow.
As the herd discussed their opinions and decisions, Faulla continued to block Rain's path, willing the mare to back away. Upon hearing Dakota's voice, she looked over. "We should leave her be, if she does happen to show too much aggression, or any signs of aggression, we will step in; but other than that, she should offer her sanctuary." Faulla replied, flicking her tail. "I understand what had happened to your sister must have been tragic to watch, but those humans have nothing to do with that incident- it wasn't her fault, and you must come to see that." She explained, returning Dakota's gaze.
Suddenly, an almost *unfamiliar* voice was heard, and Faulla craned her neck sideways to see a stallion. He was leaner, with broad shoulder blades, and a thick neck- his coat settling in blocky patterns, and his mane tied tightly into little braids, his long tail trailing behind him softly. Soon recognized as Koa. Koa had always been a quieter, more mysterious horse of the herd, never daring to involve himself in anything, so why was he here now?
But Faulla had no chance to reply before Dakota answered; Though her tone... had changed, and significantly. She was softer, almost desperate as she gazed up into his eyes as she explained that she was frightened. But Koa simply dismissed her excuses, explaining she was no different from the rest of the horses, and as he glanced over at Faulla, she nodded- watching as Dakota lowered her head and sulked away. Dakota stood there, embarrassed even more when Koa walked away. She didn't mean to sound unfair, or rude or cruel. She just had cared so much about this herd, she had forgotten to be kind. "I am sorry." She had said to the mare. "I seems as if the herd has spoken. I was wrong, and I apologize." She said, backing up and walking away. She felt bad. Very bad. She had been known for solving disputes, but now, she had just started one...

Koa stood, listening to Dakota, but her tone change caught him off guard. Why was she talking to him like that. All of a sudden when he decides to speak out, horses speak to him oddly?
"I see. You fear the possibilities of what might happen. But how are you so sure that's going to happen?" He said, and took another glance at the horse that stood there, being judged by every horse around. "Look at her. She's a horse. Just like you and I. Nothing makes her different besides how she was brought up into this world. I believe we should give her a chance. She seems to bring no harm, and simply wants to enjoy the presence of other horses. I had been watching her this whole time, and she kept her distance, and just existed within our herd." he said, pausing, looking at Faulla. "I believe your statement is correct, I believe you should treat this mare with kindness and spare her. Until anything happens, we should allow her to mingle with us. Plus, how many horses within this herd have been previously involved with humans." He said, turning back to Dakota, standing his ground firmly, noticing Dakota's face crumble. He had known she wasn't trying to be malicious, but the way she spoke out sounded wrong. She was treating this mare as if she was a wolf, or a fox. A different animal. He would not stand that. "And Dakota, one more thing." He said, seeing he look up. "Speak to me as If I am just another horse within this herd. I have no interest in a horse who is unfair and unjust." He said, turning away and slowly walking back to his original spot, not having anything to say more. He was not interested in Dakota, and never was. If anything, he used to fear her, but now he just saw her as unfair. And to be honest, he had nothing to fear. He was much larger than her. He lowered his head, and continued to graze, keeping his eyes on the horses.

Dakota looked up, hearing a voice she had not heard often, and saw the oddly colored grey pelt, whom she recognized instantly as Koa. What was he doing here? He never spoke out, especially during disputes. He normally kept to himself, and was often alone. Standing there, she felt slightly startled, as he was a large stallion, especially compared to her. She was a large horse to begin with, but Koa was something different. It startled her that the often quiet stallion had spoken out.
"This mare here, claims she is owned by humans, and I feel fear. I do not fear her, but the possibilities that could happen with her being here. Our herd could be taken away, separated, and destroyed. Ive seen what they're capable of, and I am scared." She said, looking up at him, hoping he sees reasoning, and understands how she feels. "I have nothing against this mare, it's just as soon as she came here, she was aggressive and pushing everyone who approached her away." She said, her tone turning into a gentle mix, which surprised her. Why was she speaking this way to him? She felt embarrassed, and suddenly hoped no other horse heard how she spoke.

Koa, the oddly colored stallion grazed upon the grass that lay beneath him, observing the horses around him, his ears swiveling. He had heard a slight commotion, but didn't think much of it until more horses circled one, which had made his curiosity spike. Koa wasn't known for going out of his way to start conversation, let alone join one, so the thought of him doing so felt foreign to him. He paused his grazing, to listen. Normally, when something was wrong within the herd, Dakota had solved them, as she was known as a much more dominant horse and mare compared to most here. The problems were solved within minutes, and everyone was fine.
Koa let his mind wander, thinking about how Dakota had stopped several disputes between stallions last year, just using her brute force. The mare was larger, and stronger than most. She had his respect, but sometimes he secretly feared her, so it slightly concerned him that the dispute was still going. Maybe it wasn't that severe?
"...Offer a bit more...kindness?" He looked up, seeing the lighter colored mare, whom he had known as Faulla, spoke. She had told Dakota to be kind? He stoped grazing, and lifted his head, listening now. Something wasn't right.
He slowly walked forward, and stopped next to Faulla, being respectful of the mare, and giving her space and being careful not to touch her.
"What is going on here?" He asked neutrally, wanting to know both sides. He looked around, his eyes falling on a strikingly colored mare. She had stripes. Something he had never seen before on a horse. He noticed how the horses stayed away from her, which made him confused.
Was she sick? What was wrong with her? He felt slightly bad for the poor mare, not knowing what was going on.

Dakota stood, letting the other horses voice their opinion regarding the situation, understanding each others side, but she couldn't shake the the feeling of confusion as Faulla stepped forward, blocking Rain's path, as if Rain would do anything. She had known rain to be a gentle horse, who often grazed with the foals and the mothers. She didn't speak on the matter though, just observed.
Dakota spoke gently but firmly at Faulla. "What is the decision we should make as a herd, I will not make a singular decision, as I have different views on the matter as the two of you." She said, glancing at Kairi, before continuing. "I've listened to each of your words, and it seems as if you believe not all humans are bad, but it Is very hard when the singular experience I've had with them, was seeing my fellow sister, Willow, in horrible conditions. I am just trying to understand where you horses stand. I do not want to be cruel and shun this horse away simply because it was brought up in a very different setting and raised differently, but humans have costs us many lives and has done great damage to us, if not all of us. They've taken land from us, and have taken lives of this very herd. We've had to just conform to what these creatures are capable of, and it seems as if we have no freedom, so its hard seeing a fellow horse adore these creatures, and I know some horses here have been raised by them, some having good experiences, others not. But I stand on one thing, I do not want her humans knowing where this herd is. I will not risk that, I cannot." She said, not speaking harshly.
She has tried to be understanding, and she hates the fact that she would just force a horse away, especially now, when she believed all horses should stick together and help another grow and flourish, but the thought of her herd becoming famined with humans haunts her.

Faulla, upon hearing her name, lifted her crown with ears perked and neck arched. Her hazel eyes scanned the scene, watching the supposed house-horse tossing her head defiantly while speaking of the humans as "kind". Faulla's gaze narrowed as she returned to Dakota, one of the more dominant mares of the herd.

Swinging her mane back, Faulla answered. "I believe we do, although--" She peered over Dakota's shoulder giving the house-horse a quick examination. "She is still one of us, as much as the last. I believe we should at least give her the benefit of the doubt and offer a bit more... kindness?" She punctuated the thought with a sharp, alerting snort.

On the opposite side of the clearing, a mare with long legs and patched coat froze in fear at the house-horse's explanation that she was a pet. Faulla watched as the mare approached, her ears swiveling nervously towards the newcomer, each step more hesitant than the last.

The fearful mare spoke, her voice shaky and cracking: "If you do, I don't want to know you." The words rang in Faulla's mind, and she instinctively stepped forward, blocking the patched mares path. "We understand your concerns, and they will be met, in the mean time, please, offer space." Faulla felt a twinge of guilt; they were treating this mare like a complete alien, but the trauma in the patched mare's eyes was a reminder that they were all just trying to survive their own confusion.

Hearing the commotion, Kairi, a young mare who was once a close friend with a young girl, trotted up to the area. A long time ago, she would spend her days running free in the field but would return to the young girl who would care for her, even as a foal since her and her mother were caught by humans but her mom was sold in an auction house. She would have been sent to the slaughter pen if that young girl didn't save her. One night, a large storm struck the land, causing her to lose her way. That's when this herd, what she calls her family, found and led her to safety. She's been living beside other wild horses since that day.
"Guys, what's going on here?" She asked as she tried to calm everyone down before things exculated. "Now, now Rain, we don't know her full story. Lets not jump to conclusions that humans are horrible, ok?" She stated calmly but sternly.

Rain stoped grazing and perked her head up when she caught the words "..this horse is a human pet.." Her body froze in fear as she watched and listened closely. "...For the sake of our herd..." This horse that had snorted her away when she tried to speak with her was a human pet, and she had seemed to enjoy herself. She didn't understand. She truly didn't.

Her ears pinned back tighter when she thought about her past, she was only just a young filly when it had happened. Humans had taken her when she was just born from herd, and she was ripped away from her mother. She still doesn't know who she is. But they took her to their cold pens, and they forced her to walk oddly, and eat dried grass, and would out this cold metallic stick in her mouth. She was grateful she was out, but the only reason she was out was because a human had taken her away from that pen and put her in her own pen, near this herd, and she cried and cried out, hoping someone would help her. Fast forward, she's here now. She's been with this herd since she was a foal, rescued, and accepted. But only because she had needed rescuing, and did not want anything to do with those creatures. She still doesn't. She still feels fear when she hears the name of them.

She walked forward slowly, giving her piece. "Do you truly like these humans?" She asked, not believing she truly did. "If you do, I don't want to know you. They're horrible." She said softly. "Im sorry, but I can't be around them.."
