Gold fish are a pain. They need strong filters because they shit up the place. No, put back the filter that's rated for your tank size. Get a bigger one. They also get big and need big tanks e.e
Kiwi Mountains
Fish are so much more maintenance that they seem... I thought it'd be easier than owning a bird. Nooooo much harder for absolutely no reason

@Old Gods, I keep typing the exact same thing as you without seeing your post before :'D

I lived in a pretty dodgy flat in my younger years. My partner had fish and a fish tank. We came home from being out for the day to see one of the dodgy flatties in the process of SELLING our fish and the tank.

its thriving, but only bc we make sure to clean the tank and take out water,

Fish don't have the best immune systems, if it was purchased from the pet store - it's likely it can have something wrong with it and pass quickly after. Happened with my sons 3 fish, we never got him another after that. :b

Agreed, don't buy anything bigger if you KNOW you cant keep up with it the way it needs to be tho.
The Old Gods
Also worth pointing out, if you get a fish from the store and immediately plop it into the tank, it's likely going to die when the tank parameters crash since the tank isn't cycled
Whispering Pines16
I think if its a small thing like a gold fish its better to rescue it from the pet store. Most people only truly need a filter and some food for a fish
EponasSanctuary
You guys have really good points, I wish most people took this into consideration before purchasing animals..
The Old Gods
..fish don't really care about seeing dead fish. Nine times out of ten, they'll just try to eat it lmao
AR Crestfall
Oddly specific... but the parents should had probably thought long and hard beforehand on being the home for an animal in such conditions already. If they weren't prepared to take care of it, they could have gotten their child something else.
EponasSanctuary
I can see that, I think they were mostly talking about people who go to stores to specifically rescue an animal they know they cant properly take care of. And I really do think even if said fish is in a basic tank its better than a cup (I cant say the same for other critters tho, if you know you cant put in the work and money you shouldn't buy one)
