Rocky is really mom's horse. But I help her out with him in terms of training
Stormsong Manor

Lots of people in the Western showing world especially who like to come at me with that one
El Cuco
12:46:08
Exactly.
Gaelic Gladiacres
12:46:07 Gladius
completely agree, 3+ at least. 2, 2.5 can get accustomed to tack and do groundwork but no rider. and some really could use even another year, and only light work until like 5
Ranch Lands Training

I recently saw a trainer that a somewhat respected post that there is no science showing that starting 2 year olds is bad for them 🫠 At 2 I'll do throw a saddle on if they seem mentally ready for it and do ground work (not lunging). But I'm not sitting on them until they are 3 minium
The Old Gods

I like the idea of getting them used to having stuff on their back at 2 or 3. Light weight saddle. Pop it on, take it off, get them used to the girth. But actually getting on them? hell no
El Cuco
12:45:16
I agree Ven, I always cringe seeing 2 year olds getting started.
El Cuco
12:44:51
I honestly love the baby brain. They can be a handful but they're entertaining at times. I'm glad he wound up in your care, sounds much better for him.
Stormsong Manor

Maybe a hot take here but I will die on the hill of not starting a horse under saddle with rider until they're at least 3, and they're still babies at 3.
The Old Gods
12:43:17 Void Malign
Yeah, thinking Rocky was maybe a two year old? He was a baby. Hasn't been ridden since he got here, so he's getting time to grow up and mature. He's really a sweet boy, but he still has the baby short attention span
El Cuco
12:42:02
That's awful. My old scronny Arab gal was bigger than that, and my dad is about the same size and rising western. It was a fat "no" when he wanted to ride her. Poor horse.

Void - Yikes. I am glad to hear he is in better days now.

Myth - That is absolutely horrible. I can't imagine your pain.

His back is largely straightened up...When he's not being an idiot and trying to recreate an indy 500 crash...
Gaelic Gladiacres

cuco I feel you there, we've got a number of young horses we're bringing up that really need moving because we just cannot keep up with all of them and the farm chores and the maintenance and and and... it's a slow process unfortunately
The Old Gods
12:39:35 Void Malign
I'll stick to being a realist.

Zrek: Rocky's doing better. He was a fine boned youngster (arab cross that was 14 hands or so) being ridden by a 200+ guy with a 30 pound western saddle 🙃
El Cuco
12:39:26
Gladius, he's big enough and I'm small enough that I can start him on the basics, but anything I'd like to do long term would be too harsh on him, so finding a good kid is %100 the best bet. As much as I'd be fine with him just laying around doing nothing in the pasture for forever, my dad is paying for his upkeep, so I'm sure he'd appreciate if I can get him off of his hands lol.
Gaelic Gladiacres

zrek - right? doing and volunteering at an equitherapy place really opened my eyes to the rider issues that translate into horse struggles
Mythological

With in two years I watch 4 animals die.
