Hello all! I hope you had fun reading The Cruel Prince! Lets start the discussion! . . Lets us begin with your star rating out of 5 and do you normally enjoy these types of books? (Faerie, Fantasy, Dramatic, Etc.) . Next I have some discussion questions for us to answer! These are completely optional, you can choose not to answer them, or even just answer the ones you want to. - After the first few chapters, what were your first impressions of the book and would you have continued if it weren't for a book club read?
- Why did you think Cardan was so cruel to everyone, especially mortals? Did you have any inclinations about how he was being treated by his brother?
- Why do you think Cardan writes the note on page 140? What do you think it means about his feelings toward Jude?
- What were your thoughts and feelings when you found out Locke was playing with Jude and was actually with Taryn?
- Were you shocked about the events that took place at the first coronation and the fact Madoc was involved in killing Prince Dain?
- Did you predict Jude would turn around and crown Cardan instead of Oak? How did you feel about it?
- Will you be continuing the series and do you have any predictions about what may happen next?

I will start with the first post so anyone confused can get an idea how these will work. :) . My rating was a 4/5 and I do not normally read fantasy, so this was a bit difficult for me since it is a very high fantasy book. As I do not read fantasy, it was a bit hard for me to follow at times, but I was very invested in the plot ans characters and enjoyed reading! . - The beginning of this book like I said was hard for me to follow, and I deffinitly would not have picked this up if it wasn't chosen.
- My first thoughts on Cardan's cruelty was just him being a prince and thinking he was higher and better than everyone, mainly humans. I usually do think of bullies as being mean due to hidden trama and issues, but like I said he was a prince so I thought that was why.
- When I first read about him writing the note with Jude's name on it, I believed he was in love with her and using it as a method of coping with the pain and directing his thoughts somewhere else, and obviously the force of the writing was due to the pain.
- I was so mad when I found out about Loche and Taryn! I didn't really like how Loche treated Jude and their relationship was not it for me, but for Taryn to just sit there while they were together blew my mind!
- I was very surprised at the corrination events, but I was not expecting Madoc to kill Dain! That was crazy.
- I was wondering how it was going to play out after they put the crown on Oak's head, but it completely caught me off gaurd when he placed it on Cardan's head! He must have been pissed too!
- I have been debating on continuing or not. I would like to see what happens when Jude loses her comand on Cardan, when Oak comes of age, and how everyone else will respond to Cardan's rule as well as when Oak comes to rule, but I feel like that will proabably be too far in the series to keep my investment. We will see.
My favorite quote was “Only idiots aren’t scared of things that are scary.” I just found it very funny. I didn't really have a favorite scene, but I loved the parts where Jude was acting as a spy and sneaking in to other people's places and interacitng with the Kingdom of Shadows in their hideout. |

My Book Rating : 4/5, I absolutely love this book. I highly enjoy reading fantasy and romance, specifically the enimies to lovers trope, so I quite enjoyed this one. - After the first few chapters, I felt like there wasn't much going on, not a real problem. Normally after the first couple chapters, if its not interesting and its not introducing the main problem, I give up on the book. But this book was so well written and interesting even though you don't find out the major problem until much later in the book.
- My first impression of Cardan was obviously not very good, but I know every bully has a reason behind their cruelty, whether its family problems, inner mental problems, friend problems, ect. So with this knowlage I was very intrigued by Cardan and wanted to find out why he was like that.
- At first I thought that it was almost like a death threat, but as the book went on and Cardan explained that he liked Jude and that he hated liking her, it made much more sense.
- AAAAAAAGH!!! I was so angry with Locke! I found Jude and Lockes relationship weird from the start, but I didn't think Locke would do something like that. Also I was really angry with Taryn too. She was acting all innocent and everything, but she really just stabbed Jude in the back.
- At first I was very surprised by the events at the coronation. Although as the story went on, it made more sense on why Madoc choose to kill Dain.
- Kind of? I didn't really expect it, but I saw a spoiler, on accident, before I read the book, referencing to Cardan as King of Elfhame, and was confused by this as I read the book. I think if I didn't see the spoiler ahead of time, I definitely wouldn't have expected Jude to crown Cardan instead of Oak.
- Yes absolutely! I don't really know though. The book was very twisty and turny, so I'm not really sure where Holly Black will take the second book and so on.
I did read this book a couple weeks ago, so I can really remember certain phrases to say my favorite quote, but my favorite scene, was by far the Jude and Cardan kiss scene. As a proud romance reader, this kiss scene was magical. |

My book rating: 4.5/5 I'm not huge on fantasy but this book was an exception. I really enjoyed it! - The first few chapters were the typical intro to the story but my friend who had suggested the book to me promised it would get better and she was so so right!
- My first impression on Cardan's cruelty was that he was a snotty prince who believed he was entitled but after the scene with his brother, I was leaning further towards Cardan using cruelty towards mortals and Jude as a channel for his anger, pain, and humiliation.
- On page 140 I felt that the note with Jude's name was another outlet for his anger and he's using her to kindle his hatred towards mortals.
- I had always like Locke and sympathized with Taryn but AAAAGGGHH! They're both backstabbers! I did feel that Jude and Locke's relationship got developed unusually fast based on their past but Locke still didn't need to do that. :(
- I was more than a little shocked when Balekin killed Elowyn but I was downright astonished as almost the entire royal family was slaughtered. And when Madoc killed Dain I was so stumped as to what was going to happen next.
- I knew Oak wasn't going to be crowned but I didn't really think Cardan was going to be crowned either because he kept repeating how he didn't want to be High King but I honestly had no idea what was going to happen. So.....kind of?
- I have actually finished the primary trilogy (I promise I won't spoil it!) and it was very good! Holly Black did such a good job with world building and developing Jude as a character, it was a great series and I expect I'll read it again in the future.
I read the series a few weeks ago but my favorite scene by far was when Jude captured Cardan. I found it hilarious revenge when Cardan was scared into silence as he realized Jude was a spy for Dain. It was book candy. |
