Selene’s gaze lingered on Sage, watching the way he seemed to shrink inwardly, as if the weight of his own thoughts were pressing against him. She understood that weight all too well. She’d carried her own for years, and the struggle to hold onto hope when it felt so fragile was never easy. But there was something in his words that made her want to believe in a different future—one that wasn't marked by constant battles or lingering regrets. "You don’t have to thank me," she said softly, her voice a little warmer than before, as she glanced over at Jora, still peacefully sleeping. "I did it because I couldn’t watch you lose someone else. Not like that. Not again." Her fingers twitched slightly, but she didn’t look away from Sage, choosing her words carefully. "As for you guys… things don’t have to be perfect to be real. I think we’re all just doing the best we can." Her tone was more genuine now, and there was a rare openness in her gaze, something that had been locked away for a long time. His nervous habit—chewing on his lip ring—caught her attention, and for a moment, she found herself studying it. She knew the feeling of nerves, of being on edge and not knowing how to settle it. "You'll get through it," she agreed quietly. "But don’t hold too tightly to the past. It doesn’t define who you are now." Her hand rested briefly on Jora’s arm, the soft weight of her touch grounding her thoughts. "Just be here. Now. That’s enough. For them." She glanced at him again, her expression softening. Maybe hope was worth the risk, after all. "You don’t have to prove anything to me. Just… show up. That’s all I need from you." Edited at February 1, 2025 09:36 PM by Hudie

Sage had cocked his head slightly when she mentioned not needing to thank her. He did need to thank her...if she hadn't heard Jora and come running, neither Jora nor lyra would likely be here right now. Her comment did make him stop to think though. She couldn't watch him loose someone again? Did she know him and he was oblivious? Had they met before? Maybe he was just overthinking it, which seemed like the likelier option. Her comment about just doing the best they could brought a weary smile to his face, shifting the now sleeping baby slightly since his arm was falling asleep underneath her. "Sometimes that's all we can do," he noted quietly, letting out a soft sigh when she mentioned his past didn't define him. He kept hearing that, and he wished he could believe it. But his past still haunted him, every step he took. Every time he thought he'd finally found his balance it came and knocked him off his feet again. Though, her last comment pulled a sort of chuckle from his lips, though it wasn't quite an amused one. "I don't think I'd get very far if I tried," he noted, but moved to get up to go back to his room now that he had enough energy. He was exhausted...but his legs would carry him that far, at least.

(I just had an idea. What if there's a fire and they have to evacuate? Forcing them to take a boat back to their island?) Selene stood back, watching the scene unfold with a quiet intensity. She could feel the weight of the moment pressing down on her chest, that familiar ache in her heart. She had seen so much loss in her life, so many lives snuffed out in an instant, and yet this… this moment was different. Sage’s voice had a rough edge to it, and she caught the hint of something darker in his eyes when he spoke. It wasn’t just the weariness or the exhaustion; it was something deeper. She could see it in his posture, the way he held the baby—like he was trying to grasp onto something fragile, something that could slip through his fingers at any moment. "You know," she said, her tone softer now, though still with that distant edge. "You don’t have to carry all of it alone." She paused, thinking for a moment before continuing. "I can’t tell you to forget your past. I know better than that. But there’s strength in letting others help carry the weight of it with you." She had seen too many people like him, worn down by regret and grief. If he let it, that past would swallow him whole. Her gaze flicked to the baby in his arms, her tiny chest rising and falling with each delicate breath. "Lyra... she’ll need you more than you think. Maybe that’s where you find your balance." Selene spoke quietly, but there was an unspoken challenge in her words—something meant to coax him toward something new, something worth living for, beyond all the things he couldn’t change. Her eyes lingered on him for a moment longer before she finally spoke again, shifting the conversation. "But if you need to rest… I won’t stop you." Edited at February 1, 2025 10:22 PM by Hudie

(that would work! Selene might have to go with them lol) Sage did wonder about the older woman. She seemed like there was more to her story than she expressed. But....if they grew closer, if they stayed in touch with her, maybe she would be someone they could rely on. She certainly seemed to like Jora and Lyra, at least. And even if she never really liked him as much as she liked them, that was ok. He knew Jora liked her too. She wasn't family, but she was close. And he was ok with that ..she wasn't dangerous or anything. He knew that. "I learned that. Then I had it all ripped away and now it's back. And I'm trying to understand what the hell just happened," he noted with a sort of snort, a brief look flashing through his face before it disappeared as he quickly hid it. He didn't trust her that much yet. Maybe one day, he could....maybe one day he'd have someone to look up to. He knew a parent figure was probably out of the question...but she was old enough to be, so maybe she could just ..help guide them. Figure out this whole parenting thing. When she mentioned the baby, he glanced down at the little girl in his arms, a soft smile playing across his face. "And I don't plan on ever letting her down," he murmured softly. "Life is a fragile thing," he noted quietly. He knew, without a doubt, he'd give his life for his family. And he'd do it gladly. It would be a last resort....it would kill Jora to lose him...but still.

Jora woke to the sound of commotion outside, a sharp, frantic shouting that pierced through the haze of sleep. It was only when she stepped out into the cool morning air that she understood what was happening. Smoke was rising from the direction of the town center, a thick, black cloud billowing against the clear sky. "Fire!" someone screamed from a few yards away. The panic in their voice hit her like a punch to the gut. She squinted toward the source of the smoke, the distant crackling sound of flames reaching her ears. Her heart began to race. Was it a building? Had something caught fire overnight? Her feet carried her faster than her thoughts as she moved through the narrow paths between the small houses. She couldn’t help but worry about Lyra, Selene, and Sage. What if they were caught up in it? By the time she reached the main street, the shouting had grown louder, the panic more evident. People were rushing to and fro, shouting at each other to run, to get water, to save what they could. There was a sense of chaos that felt almost... overwhelming. But then she caught a glimpse of him—Sage, cradling their little girl in his arms, looking calm amidst the madness. His words from the night before echoed in her mind. He’d said he’d never let her down. His resolve was strong. And maybe, in this moment, Jora needed to believe that too. "Fire!" someone shouted again, this time much closer. Her eyes darted to the growing inferno in the distance. But for now, she had to trust. Trust that they could survive this. Trust that they could handle whatever came next. Her steps quickened. She couldn’t lose anyone else. Not now.

Sage had fallen asleep pretty quickly once he'd gotten back to his room, and only woke when he heard yelling outside. It was frantic... something he hadn't heard since he'd been on a ship. A ship that had gotten hit and was going down. He was immediately awake, scrambling from the bed and clutching Lyra closely to his chest. He didn't see Jora right away, and a bolt of panic hit his chest as he moved quickly from the room. He could hear exactly what was going on before he got outside, and he didn't bother to hide his ears, that were twitching frantically as he tried to seek Jora out. He didn't often use his sense of smell to track people....but this was Jora, and there was a danger coming quickly towards them. The street was loud as he opened the door, the nose of the commotion nearly causing his knees to buckle, but he continued to search for his lover. He found her fairly quickly, and his shoulders relaxed. By then though, the smoke was thickening in the air, and his lungs, still weak from being in a smoke filled tavern for so long, caused him to break down into a harsh coughing fit as he moved towards her. "We have to get out of here," he rasped, attempting to calm his seizing lungs and failing pretty miserably. "Find Selene...we need to get to the water. They're not going to stop this ...they don't have enough resources here," he added. He could hear the firemen doing what they could but ..it wasn't working. But he wasn't going to leave Selene behind...she'd helped them too much for that, and he doubted Jora would let him leave her here even if he'd wanted to. They had to move quickly though...it was getting harder to see and breathe by the minute, and not only was ot affecting him so badly, but it would affect Jora and Selene, and most importantly, Lyra. The baby couldn't handle the smoke. He'd tore a sleeve off his shirt and got it wet, holding to her face to help keep the smoke out, but even so it wasn't perfect.

Jora’s eyes flicked back to Sage as she heard the desperation in his voice, and her stomach twisted. Not again. Not another situation where their lives were at risk. But this time, it wasn’t just her and Sage—Lyra was with them. Her heart clenched at the sight of him holding her so carefully, shielding the baby from the smoke. "Take her to safety, Sage," Jora said, her voice sharp, but with an edge of urgency. Her hand reached for his arm, giving him a firm but quick squeeze. "Get her away from the smoke, get her out of here. I’ll find Selene. I’ll be right behind you." She didn’t give him a chance to argue—he could barely breathe as it was—and she didn’t have time to waste. He was in no state to carry Lyra through this chaos. Her eyes were already scanning the street, searching desperately through the haze for Selene. "Go!" she snapped again, before turning on her heel, her legs moving fast through the thickening smoke, every step feeling heavier. The air was getting denser, harder to breathe, but she couldn’t hesitate. She had to find Selene. “Selene!” she shouted, her voice raw and desperate, trying to cut through the cacophony of shouting voices and crackling flames. The smoke stung her eyes, blurring her vision, but she didn’t stop. She pushed through the crowd, her hands brushing past people who were panicked, fleeing in every direction. She couldn’t let Selene get lost in all of this. She caught a glimpse of her then, barely visible through the smoke. Without thinking, she lunged forward, grabbing Selene’s arm. "Come on, we have to move!" she shouted, pulling her through the smoke, pushing her ahead of her as she steered them both toward the water. The air burned in her lungs, but there was no time to think about it now. "Keep going, we’ll get out of here," she urged, the urgency in her voice undeniable. The fire was swallowing everything around them, and every second they stayed here, the risk grew. She wasn’t going to let any of them be caught in it.

Sage hadn't wanted to leave Jora, but he knew she was right...Lyra couldn't stay in the smoke, and the way he was still so weak, his lungs already burning and spasming as he tried not to cough....well, it was safe to say she'd move quicker without him. He nodded breathlessly when she told him to go ahead, gasping out a "be careful," before turning and heading for the docks. They didn't have a boat, but they could take one of the ones the city owned....that way no one personal would go to find their boat gone, leaving them stranded here in the midst of the flame. But he could take the city's...they were small enough for one person to steer and move, but big enough that the sails would get them away from the smoke quickly and easily. There were rooms too...so they could sleep if need be. They were far away from home as of right then. He wasted no time scrambling onto the boat, coughing heavily the whole time. It really was hard to breathe, and by the time he saw Jora and Selene scramble onto the boat, his agonizing gasps for air weren't doing much. His vision was starting to swirl around too, but he flicked the lever starting the boat up and lowered the sails, getting them out of the harbor and away from the flame that was consuming everything in its path. He wasn't getting enough air ..but hopefully the clear ocean breeze would help. His vision was going on and out...but he knew how to steer a ship. He didn't need to see to know how it worked, how the ocean worked.

Jora watched him stumble onto the boat, barely able to keep himself upright. She knew how much he hated looking weak—how much he hated needing help—but it was hard to ignore the way his body was betraying him, lungs burning with every breath. She moved quickly, grabbing a line and pulling herself up onto the boat, feeling the sway of the water beneath her feet. He looked like he was struggling, his hands shaking as he worked the sails, his breath ragged and shallow. Her eyes flicked to Selene, who was standing nearby, face drawn with concern, but neither of them said anything. What was there to say? Sage was trying, but it was clear he wasn’t okay. Jora stepped closer, reaching out for his arm, her fingers brushing his shoulder lightly. He barely seemed to notice, too focused on the boat’s movement, his grip on the wheel white-knuckled. “Let me take the wheel,” she said, her voice low but firm. "I've got it," she added, more gently this time, her voice carrying the weight of understanding he wouldn't speak aloud. "Just breathe. You need to rest, Sage."

Sage hadn't noticed Jora at first, though when she moved to touch his shoulder he cast a quick glance over at her, heasitating at her words before slowly releasing his grip and the wheel and moving over. He didn't get very far, of course, just sliding down the wall next to her, legs finally giving out beneath him. He just pulled his knees to his chest and put his arms on his knees, tilting his head back and just working on breathing. The boat pulled slightly to the right, and he wanted to tell Jora that since she was driving....but he couldn't catch his breath enough for that. But Jora would recognize it....she knew how to run a boat herself just as well as he did. He wasn't sure how long he sat there, breaths wheezing in and out, before the clear air of the ocean had allowed his lungs to start taking in more air. They started to burn less and less, and after maybe half an hour or so he was more or less back to normal. He was exhausted, and sweaty, and felt like he'd just run a marathon or something...but he could breathe. His vision has cleared up, and he was slowly getting more comfortable. When Lyra started crying, hungry as she woke, he raised his head wearily. He made the move to get up, but Selene was quicker and by the time he'd started moving already had the baby in hers arms. He threw her a grateful look, settling back down again.
