Jora’s heart ached as she watched him, so fragile and vulnerable in front of her. She could feel the weight of everything he was carrying, and yet, here he was, trusting her to carry it with him. His words were soft, like he was too exhausted to fight them back, but they settled into her chest like a promise.
*Don’t leave.*
She heard him. She always heard him, no matter how quiet or broken his voice was. But this time, there was a rawness in it that made her heart tighten, and she fought the impulse to reach for him again. He was slipping into unconsciousness, and as much as she wanted to stay right there, to never leave his side, she knew he needed rest—*they* both needed rest.
Her fingers brushed his hair back gently, tucking him in as though he were a child, even though she knew he wasn’t. He’d always carried so much weight, always been so strong, but now... now she was the one who would hold him up. She wasn’t going anywhere. Not this time. Not ever again.
"I’m not leaving, Sage. I’m here. Always," she whispered, her voice steady even if her heart was still racing.
She stayed there for a long while, just watching him breathe, listening to the soft rhythm of his pulse.
When he finally fell into a deeper sleep, she let herself exhale, pressing her hand gently against his chest for a moment, feeling the steady thrum of his heartbeat beneath her palm. *One step at a time.* And no matter how long it took, she would be there, taking every step with him.

Sage had slipped off into unconsciousness quickly after that. It was a nice, deep sleep, brought about by the medicine that was steadily being pumped into him. He didn't mind it though....he needed the rest. He knew that. And he also knew that without that medicine he wouldn't get very much rest, no matter how tired his body was.

He slept through the rest of the day, and into the night, since when he woke again the sun was high in the sky. The light was filtering in through the blinds as he sort of blinked and stretched. He settled down quickly with a wince when his body protested the movement...but he sort of moved to half lean against the headboard of the bed anyway, peering around curiously.

Jora was there reading, and when she noticed him stir she was right next to the bed. He offered her a tired smile, scooting over so she could sit on the edge of the bed. Of course, now that his mind was clearer, there was only one thing on his mind...his family. "What does she look like," he hummed after a moment. He wanted to meet his baby, more than anything.

Jora gave him a look that was half concerned, half playful. She shifted her weight on the bed so she was sitting a little closer to him. “You’re asking about her already? You sure you’re sober enough for that?”
She raised an eyebrow, watching him carefully as if trying to gauge whether his mind was as clear as he wanted to believe. “If you are sober, then I can bring her over, and you can see for yourself.”
Her tone was light, but there was an edge of caution there. She knew how important this moment was for him—but she also knew how his head had been before, and she wasn’t willing to risk him getting overwhelmed or confused when it mattered the most. She wanted to be sure he was really ready.

Sage chuckled softly in response to her comment and waved off her concern. "It's been an entire day," he pointed out in slight amusement. It was nice to see Jora as the protective mother though...it made it all seem more real, somehow. "And she is my daughter. I think I've missed enough of her life already," he added quietly, a frown crossing his face for a moment before he pushed it aside.

He did wish he'd been there when Jora had gone into labor. She'd needed him. And...well, he wasn't there. She'd needed him this entire time, and he'd been in the tavern feeling sorry for himself while she'd been struggling. But he did ache to see his baby girl ...he'd been waiting for months, and she was finally here. "I want to see her. Even if you'd rather me look and not hold her...I just want to see her face," he whispered. He wouldn't blame her if she didn't want him to hold her yet....he'd been a pretty bad father so far. But he just needed to see her.

Jora couldn’t help the pang in her chest at his words. She could see the guilt and regret behind them, even if he tried to hide it. It was written all over his face, in the slight tremor of his voice, and the way he spoke of missing his daughter’s life. It made her want to soften, but that old wall she’d built between them hadn’t quite come down yet.
Jora steps away and comes back with their daughter wrapped in blankets, her eyes softening as she glanced down at their daughter, nestled in her arms. "And I’m not going to keep her from you, Sage. I just... I’ve been doing this alone for so long, I’m not sure how to share her yet."
Jora shifted her gaze back to him, the weariness still there in her expression, but something else too. A flicker of hope. "You want to see her face? You can see her." She paused, hesitant. "You’re right. She’s your daughter, too. I just need to know you’re really here this time."
Her voice softened as she added, almost as if it was an afterthought, “And maybe... maybe you can hold her. She deserves a father's touch”

Sage watched Jora leave, shifting slightly as he sat there. He was impatient, and excited, yes, but...he was mostly nervous, he thought. He'd messed up pretty badly, he knew that. And he didn't have the slightest idea of what to do. How to be a father. He'd never been around a baby before....he'd only seen glimpses of them when at Tortuga or heard stories about them from others.

His thoughts whirled through his head, and he placed a hand on his stomach as bile seemed to rise in his throat. What was he doing? He should be focusing on being happy to see his daughter. But what if he messed up here too? It was clear Jora didn't completely trust him with the child yet...and he didn't blame her. Not at all. He was still processing a lot himself, but he knew she had to have her own opinions about him after seeing him like...that. opinions she wouldn't want him to necessarily know about.

When she came back into the room though, his eyes went wide as he focused on the small bundle in hers arms. She was so small. So fragile. He could feel his pulse speeding up, and he couldn't help the hitch on his breath as he noticed her. A flicker of pain ran over his face at Joras words, though, and he nodded. "I know. I'm sorry," he murmured quietly. He wished he'd fought harder or.... something. He should have. He should have tried harder to find her. Find them. He'd failed them... something he didn't ever want to do. Something he'd promised to never do.

A small bit of hope rose in his face when she mentioned he could see her, and maybe hold her. "I don't know it's my touch she deserves," he murmured after a moment, but his gaze stayed on her as Jora moved to sit down on the bed next to him, straining for any sort of look he could get at the baby. He hadn't made a move to reach for her, no matter how badly he wanted to. ...he wasn't sure Jora would appreciate it. He longed to reach out for her, take her in his arms, and never let go. But....he didn't have that right. Not yet.

Jora watched him, sitting there with his eyes fixed on the bundle in my arms, his expression so torn between longing and doubt that it almost hurt to see. She could feel the tension in the room, thick and suffocating, as if they were both holding our breath, waiting for something to shift.
She knew what he was feeling. The uncertainty, the fear of messing up, of not being enough.
She could tell he was struggling, could see it in the way his hand hovered over his stomach, the way his breath caught in his throat. She understood why he was hesitating. He didn’t trust himself yet. And to be fair, she hadn’t given him many reasons to.
But when she sat down next to him, bringing their daughter closer, she saw the flicker of something in his eyes. Hope. Maybe for the first time, he was seeing what he could be—a part of her life. She could tell he wanted to reach for her, but he was holding himself back, waiting for permission, waiting for her to say it was okay.
She could feel the weight of his apology hanging between them, like it was all he had to offer right now. "I know. I'm sorry," he whispered, and even though it wasn’t enough—because nothing could undo the past—it was a start.
His self-doubt was palpable, and she almost hated it. He needed to see that he was more than his mistakes. That he had the chance to be better. For her. For them. "She needs you," she said, her voice steady but soft, meeting his gaze. "And you *do* deserve to hold her."
She watched him carefully as he hesitated, unsure of himself. "I don't know if it's my touch she deserves," he murmured. It was almost like he was asking for permission, but more than that, it was the sound of someone who had been made to feel like he wasn’t enough. Like the past would forever haunt his every move.
Jora could feel his hesitation, his fear of breaking something too fragile to fix, but she needed him to know. "She doesn’t need perfection," she said, her voice softer now, her heart aching for the both of them. "She just needs you to be here. And that’s enough."
She wanted to reach out and pull him closer, wanted to make him see that he didn’t have to carry all that guilt on his own. But instead, she held her a little closer, letting the space between us be filled with the possibility of what could be—what *would* be—if he just took that first step.
"She's your daughter, Sage," she added quietly, feeling the weight of those words. It wasn’t just something he had to accept, it was something they both had to. The past was there, lingering, but it didn’t have to control them.
She could see the struggle in him, but she also saw something else. The way his gaze softened, the way his hand twitched, as if he might finally reach for her. And that gave her the hope she needed.

Sage sort of just blinked as Jora spoke, her voice full of understanding. She was still quiet, giving him what he needed to heal, but form at the same time. Steady. Something he could rely on. Trust. He'd need to get used to that again...he knew he could trust her, she'd given him no reason not to. And he did trust her ..it was just hard to accept that. Hard to understand he was in a safe place, and it was real, and they'd all be ok.

Her words hit home in a way he didn't expect though, and he let out a heavy breath. She was his daughter.... And he knew he was never going to leave her again. He just nodded slowly, processing hours words, trying to understand them. Accept what she was saying as truth even when he didn't believe all of it. "And I'll never leave her again," he murmured after a moment, hesitating for a moment longer before extending his hands towards the baby slowly, a slight tremor causing him to shake slightly as he did so. This shouldn't be so... Scary.

All his fears finished as his handed her over though, and the baby curled into his chest, fist automatically clenching around the fabric of his shirt. A soft breath of wonder escaped his lips, a smile forming on his face as he realized what this was. This was his baby.... And he was holding her, and he loved her more than anything else in the world. He was crying again, silent tears that were slowly making their way down his face. But these weren't bad tears, he didn't think. He felt good... Happy... And it was quite strange after his time at the tavern. But it certainly wasn't unwelcome. "She's perfect," he choked out, instinctively curling around the resting baby in a protective manner.

"What did you name her," he asked quietly after a moment, wanting to know. Needing to know. It sent a pang through his chest... He should have been there to name her too. They'd talked about names, but nothing had been decided, especially since they hadn't known what they were having. But it had been over a week... So surely she'd have named her by now.

Jora shifted slightly, her eyes softening as she watched him cradle the baby in his arms, her heart full of both hope and hesitation. The moment was still fragile, and though she could feel the love between them growing, there was an unspoken weight—things hadn’t been simple, and naming their daughter had never been either.
She took a deep breath, her voice barely above a whisper. "I… I didn’t name her yet. I was hoping you and I could name her together, like we talked about." There was a gentle tremor in her voice, as if the words carried all the weight of their unspoken history. "I didn’t want to do it without you, not when we’d already started making plans."
Her gaze lingered on him for a long moment, searching his face for any signs of what he might be feeling. She was trying to be patient, but part of her feared the tension would be too much. It had always been about shared choices, shared moments, and this one had felt like too big a thing to do alone.

Sage couldn't help but stare at Jora for a second as he'd processed what she'd said. She ...hadn't named her yet? To wait for him? He could feel his heart practically melting inside his chest, and he gave her a soft smile and a nod. "Thank you," he murmured. It was heavy with emotion...he certainly hadn't expected that. He'd figured she would have named the baby once she'd had it. He'd though he'd missed all of that. But she'd waited. She wanted to do this together.

He moved to drag a hand down his face, wiping the tears away and anigging as he tried to get his emotions under control. Everything so so raw, so new almost. It was just a lot to deal with. But for the most part, at least right now, they were all good things. "We should do it soon then," he added, sort of relaxing against the headboard a little bit.

He peered down at the baby as she shifted, waking up and peering up at him with a small coo. His heart nearly stopped at the sound, and he couldn't help but smile down at the baby, humming a quiet greeting to her, stroking her cheek with his finger gently. She'd grabbed a hold of it immediately, and he let her attempt to chew on it with a small chuckle, knowing she wouldn't have teeth yet to actually bite him.

"She has your eyes," he hummed softly to Jora, eyes not leaving the precious sight in his arms. She really was the perfect combination of the two of them, and had no doubts she would grow into a fine young woman someday. She would go far in life. And that life would be a good one. He would never let anything bad happen to her....she wouldn't have the life he and Jora had had. She'd be safe with them. No matter what.
