Sage cocked his head towards the noise of the man wandering towards him. He'd hoped he was just out for a midnight stroll, and would pass by without bothering him, but no. His footsteps were purposeful, and sped up slightly once the man saw him there. No, he'd been looking for him, for whatever reason.

He blinked slowly at the man as he spoke, grunting in agreement after a moment or so. "And you are," he asked, figuring he was probably royalty since he would be the princess older brother. But he had no idea who this guy was.

He shrugged when he mentioned a room and a meal though, getting to his feet with a grunt and gesturing for the man to lead the way. He knew his way around the castle just fine...but he didn't know where they wanted him. "What do you want," he asked after a moment, as they turned to walk towards the castle. "Most princes don't come trying to find me at nearly midnight," he added, eyebrows arching upwards slightly.

Nate’s jaw tightened, his eyes never leaving the stranger. His tone was calm, but there was a dangerous edge lurking just beneath it. “I’m Nathen, go by Nate though. I’m offering you a room so my father doesn’t rip your head off for not being anywhere near my sister. Now, are you coming or not?”
The words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken threats. He stood there, waiting, letting the tension build for a moment before stepping back, his eyes never leaving the stranger’s face. If the guy had any sense, he’d take the offer and walk out of this with whatever dignity he had left.
But Nate wasn’t in the mood for games. Either the man accepted the offer, or this was going to get a lot more complicated.

Sage had rolled his eyes slightly when the man mentioned her father ripping his head off. "He can try, though he's not the one I'm supposed to be taking orders from," he noted casually, but got to his feet anyway. He should probably watch his tongue...talking badly about the king was a pretty good way to get his head ripped off. But he got the impression his family didn't like him as much as you would think.

"Though I suppose if I get free food I may as well follow you to wherever that would be," he added, his words a sort of half joke. A peace offering, if you will. This man didn't seem like someone he'd want to fight with...not because he was afraid he'd lose, but because he simply had no quarrel with him. Fighting would make no sense....not when they both had jobs to do.

The man seemed a bit frosty, but he was her big brother. It was his job to take care of her too. Which meant the two of them had the same goals. Maybe that would mean they could get a long. As in....not argue constantly. He wasn't expecting a friend or anything...he knew better than to ever wish for that. He didn't get those. Never had, never would. But that didn't mean they needed to be enemies either. Plus....he was really hungry and could definitely appreciate a roof over his head and a bed to sleep in at night. Hell, he just appreciated sleeping at night.

Nate let out a short, dry laugh, the tension in his posture loosening just a little. “You know,” he said, his voice less sharp than before, “you’re not the first person to tell me that. Sometimes it feels like my job’s just keeping everyone from fighting.” He gave Sage a quick, almost wry glance, then nodded toward the hallway. “Guess we’re on the same page, for now.”
He turned and motioned for Sage to follow, the casualness creeping into his steps. “You might as well take the room,” Nate continued, his voice more relaxed as he led the way down the corridor. “If you’re gonna be around for a while, it’s probably best we keep things... civil. Besides, my father’ll have a fit if I don’t at least try to make you comfortable.”
He gave a shrug, as though it wasn’t a big deal, but it was clear Nate’s usual guarded nature was softening. He didn’t want to fight. It wasn’t like he was here to make an enemy of the guy. For all he knew, Sage might not be the worst person to share space with. But that didn’t mean he was about to drop his guard completely, not yet.
The hallway felt quieter now, the tension in the air easing with every step they took. “Just don’t get too comfortable around my sister, alright? You seem alright for now, but let’s keep things that way.”
He stopped in front of a door and pushed it open, revealing a modest, but comfortable room. The bed was neatly made, the window letting in the faint glow of moonlight from outside. Nate glanced back at Sage with a raised brow. “Here. Get some rest. And no funny business. I’m serious.”
Nate's tone was casual, but there was an edge to it—a reminder that the rules were still clear, even if they were playing nice for now. He leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed. “Food’s downstairs if you’re still hungry. Don’t take too long.”
Without waiting for an answer, Nate gave a nod and started to turn, but paused, glancing over his shoulder.
“You’ll be alright here, for now. Just, don’t make me regret this,” he added, his voice quieter, more of a warning than anything else. Then, he stepped back into the hallway, leaving Sage to settle in.
It was a small gesture, but for now, it was enough.

Sage let a sort of small laugh come from his own lips when the older boy chuckled as well. Good...it was pretty clear neither of them wanted to fight. They would be civil with each other. That made his life a hell of a lot easier. There was someone who wants ready to take his head off at a moments notice.

He followed the guy down to the room he was to be staying at. It was right by the princesses...no doubt do if she needed him he could come running. He didn't care one way or the other where it was though, he was just glad to be able to have a good night's rest each night. Or...most nights, at the very least. He supposed that depended on how often she took off.

When Nate made sure to mention no funny business around his sister he shook his head. "Im here to work. I don't mess around on the job," he reassured the man, gaze meeting his steadily. It was true. He had no interest in any sort of romantic relationship. Especially not with the princess. They would have no issues there.

He stood there for a few minutes longer before deciding to go eat something. He moved down to grab a few things, eating quickly and then taking some back up to his room. He couldn't remember the last time he'd been full ..he could hardly believe it. They had running water too, for a shower, so he slipped on there, and was pleasantly surprised to find the water warm. He'd never seen that before, but he'd found he quite liked it.

It didn't take long after that for him to get dried of and dressed, and then plop into bed. He passed out quickly, more than happy to be comfortable. It had been years since his had even come close to happening.

Nate turned back at the door, his hand resting on the frame for a moment as if he almost forgot something important. He glanced over his shoulder at Sage, his expression hardening again, though there was still a hint of that earlier tension in his eyes.
"One more thing," Nate said, voice low but serious. "Be careful around Elara. It’s... complicated. Trust me, you don’t want to get tangled up in whatever’s going on with her." His eyes narrowed slightly, as if the warning itself carried a weight far heavier than the words could express.
He paused, giving Sage a long look. Then, his posture relaxed, and he gave a brief nod, like the moment had passed.
"You need anything, holler. I’ll be around," he added, and with that, he stepped back into the hallway and left, the door clicking shut behind him.
The air in the room felt quieter, heavier now, and the mention of Elara lingered in the space. Whatever was going on there, it was clear it wasn’t something to be taken lightly. But for now, it was just another complication in the long list of things Sage had to figure out.

Sage had glanced back at Nate when he spoke up again, giving the man a small nod. "Don't worry, the only thing I'm concerned with trying to figure out is how the hell I'm going to get her to let me around her," he noted, phrasing it as a joke. He'd do fine....he'd just follow her around....but even so.

He'd passed out pretty quickly after that, feeling almost off to be so comfortable. Clean, and warm, and not needing to wake up through the night or sleep super lightly due to alleyway dangers. Nothing like that. It was peaceful here.

He woke with the sun though, like he normally did, and moved to lay around for a while in the sun, just taking the time to wake up slowly. He definitely wasn't a morning person, and it took him a while to fully wake up. However, this was the first time he had the luxury of letting himself lay around to wake up in the mornings.

Eventually though, he did move to get up and get ready, wandering down to the breakfast spread he knew would be up and ready by then. He was getting hungry by then again, and he'd definitely make use of the food here.

The morning light filtered through the heavy curtains, casting a soft golden hue across Elara’s room. She woke slowly, a strange heaviness pressing down on her chest, as if the weight of the night’s decision was still lingering in the air. For a moment, she lay still, listening to the sounds of the castle coming to life outside her door—the soft murmur of servants passing by, the distant clang of metal as knights readied for their morning drills, the quiet chatter of the court preparing for another day.

But none of it mattered. Not anymore.

Her eyes snapped open, and the reality of the previous night came rushing back in a sudden, dizzying rush. The map. The satchel. The escape. Elara pushed herself up in bed, her hand brushing against the rough fabric of the tunic she’d carefully selected the night before. The cloak lay draped over the chair, already prepared. Her mind was a whirlwind of questions, of doubts. Was she really going through with it? Was she really about to leave it all behind?

Her heart thudded heavily in her chest as she swung her legs over the edge of the bed, her feet cold against the stone floor. She didn’t have time to waste. The castle was waking up, and she couldn’t afford to be caught. She had to move. She had to—

A knock at the door.

Elara froze, her breath catching in her throat. Her pulse quickened. It was too early for anyone to come looking for her. She’d never gotten up this early, and even if she had, she wasn’t expecting any visits. Not now. Not today.

The knock came again, firmer this time. She could hear the faint sound of someone clearing their throat, a guard, perhaps, or a servant. Whoever it was, Elara knew they wouldn’t leave without an answer.

Panic surged within her, but she quickly pushed it down. She didn’t have time to freeze up now. Her eyes darted to the window—no way out that way. The door was the only exit. But she couldn’t leave the room. Not yet.

Her thoughts raced as she grabbed the satchel from the chair, slipping it over her shoulder and making sure the map was tucked safely inside. Her gaze fell on the mirror across the room, her reflection still as composed as it had always been. But inside, everything was different. She was no longer just the princess. She was someone else. Someone who was about to take the first step away from everything she’d ever known.

The knock came again, more urgent this time. Elara’s mind whirred, thinking fast. She needed to stall, to buy herself a few more moments. She quickly walked to the door, pulling it open just a crack, keeping her face partially hidden.

“Yes?” Her voice was steady, but there was an edge to it, betraying the tension coiled within her.

The guard standing in the doorway, one of the younger men who usually handled the morning routines, looked at her with a nervous expression. “Princess Elara,” he began, his voice slightly shaky. “Forgive me for disturbing you, but your presence is requested in the hall. The council is meeting, and—"

“I’ll be down shortly,” she interrupted, her tone sharp, cutting him off before he could finish. She couldn’t let him see how badly her hands were shaking, how her breath was shallow. “I need a moment. I’ll be right there.”

The guard blinked, clearly taken aback by her abruptness, but nodded quickly. “Of course, Princess. Apologies for disturbing you.”

The door closed, and Elara exhaled sharply, her breath shaky. She could still hear the faint echo of his footsteps as he moved down the hall, but she didn’t have much time. She had to leave now, before the council’s meeting dragged on for hours, before her father or any of the others could send someone to find her.

Quickly, Elara grabbed the cloak from the chair and pulled it around her shoulders, fastening the hood low over her face. She didn’t need anyone recognizing her, not yet. Her heart hammered in her chest, but her movements were swift, decisive. She crossed to the window, easing it open as quietly as possible. The chill morning air brushed her face, the coolness offering a fleeting sense of clarity.

The courtyard below was mostly empty, the servants still preparing for the day’s work. She could see the distant shapes of the guards, but they were far enough away that she could slip past undetected.

Taking a deep breath, she hoisted herself onto the windowsill and swung her legs over the side, carefully lowering herself down. The rough stone of the wall scratched against her skin, but she kept moving, inch by inch, until her feet finally touched the ground.

Elara didn’t stop to look back at the castle as she darted through the shadows of the courtyard, making her way toward the back gate. She didn’t look up at the towers, the walls that had defined her life for so long. Instead, she kept her head down, her pulse racing, only thinking of the road ahead—the unknown future that now stretched before her.

The gate loomed closer, and for the first time in a long while, Elara felt something she hadn’t felt in years: hope. It flickered in her chest like a fragile flame, but it was enough. Enough to push her forward, enough to make her believe that leaving this life behind was the only way she could truly live.

Sage had wandered through the breakfast buffet, grabbing things he thought looked good. There was no rhyme or reason to his selections....he sort of just wanted to try everything, he supposed. And this was a buffet, after all. In a castle. They had plenty of money and food....he'd take all he wanted to.

Of course, the council meeting was starting soon, so breaksat was cleared away after a while, and sage moved to lean in the corner outside the hall, knowing the princess would be coming down here. When she didn't show, though, and the meeting was nearly started, his eyes narrowed as his mind started circling.

She could very well just be in her room, refusing to come down. He figured the more likely option, however, was that she'd left. She could be out in the gardens, or she could go out to her little spot in the woods. Either way, he doubted she'd be coming down to the meeting.

So, as he waited for her brother to show up, he stayed there, leaning against the wall and thinking. When he saw the older man wandering towards the council chambers though, he stood from where he was leaning and caught his eye. "I'm not sure your sister is going to make it to this meeting," he noted quietly. "I suggest you try to keep your father calm as possible," he added.

Then he scowled. "And you can tell him that if he hits her again I'll take the same action to protect her from him as I would a commoner on the street," he all but spat. Clearly it was a touchy subject, but then again....this was his job. To protect her. Defend her. And if he had to do that from her own father, then so be it.

But if she was gone, he wasn't going to force her back.

Elara woke to the pale light of dawn seeping through the curtains.

It was always too early for anything good to happen at this hour, but then again, she wasn’t really one for sleep. The endless weight of her duties, the sharp edges of her position, always pressing in, making the quiet mornings feel like another prison.

She stretched, the cool air against her skin a reminder that today was not going to be like the others. No, today she was going to do something she hadn't in a long while: escape. Just for a few hours, at least.

She slipped out of bed, careful not to wake the attendants that would usually be bustling around. She didn’t need anyone’s help today. Not yet.

Elara grabbed a simple tunic from the wardrobe—dark green, a little snug, but it worked—and pulled on a cloak to hide her identity. The pale morning sunlight caught in the fabric, but she wasn’t worried about it. The streets of the castle were empty this early. It would be easy enough to slip by unnoticed.

She paused in front of the mirror for a moment, her reflection staring back at her with cold, calculating eyes. She hated how it felt, being trapped in this role, this life. But today, she could at least breathe for a while. She was going to slip out of the palace, blend into the city, and feel like a person, not a princess.

With a quick glance over her shoulder, she grabbed a small pouch of coins from the drawer—enough to get her through the day if she needed it—and tucked it into her belt. She didn’t need much, just the freedom to wander without being watched.

Quietly, she stepped out of her chambers and into the hall. The corridors were still empty at this hour, the soft echo of her footsteps the only sound in the silence. She passed the guards stationed outside her door, their eyes heavy with sleep. They barely glanced at her as she moved past, and she fought the urge to smirk. It would be too easy to slip by them. It always was.

But there was something thrilling about it, something satisfying in knowing she was going somewhere they couldn't follow. For once, she wasn’t the golden child or the symbol of her family’s power. For once, she was just a woman, walking freely into a world she rarely got to experience.

Her heart beat faster as she neared the palace exit. She reached the massive, wooden doors that led to the outside world, a world that didn’t know her as a princess, didn’t expect her to be anything other than a person. She pushed open the door, stepping into the cool morning air, the scent of the city just waking up greeting her like an old friend.

She pulled her cloak tighter around herself and kept her head down, keeping a low profile. The streets were quieter than usual, a few early risers setting up shop or delivering goods. She slipped through the gaps between the buildings, moving quickly, easily, until she was a few blocks away from the castle.

She could already feel the change in the air, the shift from cold stone to warm cobblestones beneath her boots. For a moment, she just stood there, breathing it in. Freedom. A small taste, but a taste nonetheless.

And as she walked deeper into the city, she couldn't help but smile. It was an unfamiliar feeling, but one she couldn’t deny.

For once, Elara was on her own.
