It took her a moment to notice the shift in his mood, but when his smile faded, a frown tugged at her own lips. "Kai, I was just—" she began, her voice faltering for a second as she caught sight of the disappointment in his face. Her words trailed off, her expression softening as she tried to piece together what had gone wrong. She felt a slight tension coil in her chest, a knot she couldn’t quite untangle. His sudden turn, his back to her, stung more than she expected. She followed him out, her steps quiet, but she could feel the distance growing between them, the air suddenly thick with something she hadn’t intended. She let out a soft sigh, grabbing a towel and wrapping it around herself, making sure it was snug before slipping her underwear off and pulling her dress back on, putting her underwear on a rock nearby to dry off. “Did I say something?” Her voice was softer now, the playful teasing gone, replaced with a quiet concern. She couldn’t shake the feeling that she had done something wrong, something that made him pull away right after he'd started to relax. "I didn't mean to upset you, I was just messing around," she murmured, her words quiet as she tried to understand what had caused the shift between them. Her eyes followed him as he dried off, lingering for a moment on the marks that traced his back, a silent understanding passing between them. "I feel safe with you," she added gently, her voice almost a whisper, as if to let him know that her actions were never meant to hurt him. She tried a soft, apologetic smile, hoping it could bridge the gap, though she wasn’t sure if it would. |

The lakeside breeze teased at her hair as she placed a light hand on his back, a small, instinctive gesture of reassurance—but just as quickly, she pulled it away. His earlier words came back to her, asking her not to touch him like that. She frowned faintly, wondering if she’d gone too far, if she’d overstepped some invisible boundary. “Kai,” she began, her voice quieter now, softened by the calm ripple of the lake behind them. “I was just joking.” She offered a small shrug, her smile returning, gentle and sincere, as though trying to smooth the air between them. “I don’t see you as a danger.” Her words carried an easy hum, but there was a depth to them, an insistence that he believe her. She moved to sit on the rock where he'd set the clothing, watching as the sun glinted off the gentle waves, catching the loose strands of her hair as she began running her fingers through it, pulling it back into a neat plait. “You’ve done nothing but look after me for the past two months,” she mused, her voice light, yet unwavering. “In no world could I ever think of you as a danger.” Her braid finished, she glanced back up at him, the playful edge in her smile softening into something more intentional. The wind carried the faint scent of wildflowers, the lake stretching out behind her like a canvas of blues and greens. She leaned back slightly, resting her hands on the rock’s warm surface, and added with a quiet chuckle, “If anything, you might be the safest thing in my world right now, with all night kingdom things going on," she murmured gently. |

Camery Valatieri - Camery watched him walk away, her shoulders drooping as his words echoed in her mind. Sit tight. Had she really done something that wrong? Had she upset him so much? It certainly seemed like it. He barely even acknowledged her, and her playful attempt at joking around had clearly missed the mark. She only wanted to see him smile, to get him to let go of that cold, stoic facade that always seemed to follow him like a shadow. Maybe they weren’t there yet. Maybe he wasn’t ready for that kind of connection. She just wanted him to be happy, even if it was only for a moment. When he returned, she caught herself smiling softly as he settled beside her, but the warmth quickly turned to a soft flush across her face when he spoke. His words caught her off guard, a little playful spark lighting up in her chest. Touching him like that... asking him to take her to bed? Her heart skipped a beat, and a shy chuckle slipped from her lips. "Oh, well... I didn’t mean it like that." Her voice was light, trying to smooth over the awkwardness, but the curiosity was there. She let her eyes linger on his back for a moment before teasing softly, "But what if I did mean it that way? Then what?" Her smile tugged at her lips, playful and lighthearted, but underneath, she couldn’t help wondering why he’d reacted that way. Then again, maybe it didn’t matter. She knew now. But as his tone shifted, speaking of his father, her teasing smile vanished. Her brows furrowed with a sudden, quiet concern. "I’m sorry," she whispered, almost to herself. She watched him intently, her eyes tracing where the scars would be on his back. "Your father did that?" she murmured softly, her voice gentle, but filled with disbelief. She shook her head quickly, the sorrow evident in her movements as she pressed her shoulder lightly against his arm. "I didn’t know," she said, her words barely a murmur. "I promise, I don’t see you like that," she continued, her voice thick with sincerity. "You’re not a danger at all." She glanced out at the lake, her gaze soft but steady, her next words barely more than a whisper. "I haven’t felt so safe in... well, forever. You make me feel safe, and I do trust you, Malakai." Her words hung in the air, vulnerable but true as she leaned into the quiet comfort of the moment. |

She rolled her eyes in a way that was almost playful, her tone dipping into something subtly flirtatious as she replied, “Oh, is that so? I wouldn’t be able to walk?” She arched a brow, the corner of her lips pulling into a teasing grin. “You sound awfully sure of yourself. Who can I talk to for proof?” she quipped, giving him a gentle bump with her shoulder. It was all in good fun, though she could sense the weight behind his words. For him, this probably wasn’t such a big joek. When his arm slid around her, she felt her smile soften, her heart giving a faint, unsteady beat. She glanced up at him, watching the way his gaze lingered on the lake, the midday light reflecting off the water and casting a soft glow across his features. His eyes, so bright, so clear, seemed to draw her in completely. He was gorgeous... a quiet frustration threading through the realization. Leaning into him just slightly, she let out a soft breath, her playful energy melting into something gentler. “I really am sorry about your dad,” she whispered, her voice barely above the sound of the breeze. Her words hung in the air for a moment before she added, quieter but edged with a hint of bitterness, “It’s not fair. That someone could do that to their own child.” |

Her chest tightened as she drew in a slightly unsteady breath, her fingers fumbling with the rest of her clothing. It was a habit she couldn’t quite shake—deflecting her discomfort with jokes that never landed as well as she hoped. Silently, she peeled herself away from his arm, the warmth lingering even as she stood. Extending a hand toward him, she offered a quiet, almost hesitant, “I mean it. I’m sorry.” Her voice wavered, barely audible, but sincere. Once he was on his feet, she let her hand drop quickly, her gaze slipping away as she turned toward the winding path back to the castle. She started walking, each step heavier than the last, the playful energy from earlier now long gone. “Thank you for telling me,” she said softly, breaking the silence. She kept her eyes ahead, her voice steady but tinged with something unspoken. About his father—he hadn’t needed to share that, not with her. But he had. That had to mean something, didn’t it? That he felt safe enough to trust her, at least a little? “We should head back,” she muttered, her tone quiet and subdued. The castle loomed in the distance, a shadow against the late afternoon sky, and as they walked, she couldn’t help but wonder if she’d said enough. |
