A nurse gently nudged past Adele to give Caelan a spoonful of something, then pulled a warmer blanket over him. She looked at Adele with sympathy. "The best thing to do right now is to keep him warm, make him drink a lot of water, and give him these medicines ever hour." She gestured to the bedside table, on which were three bottles of thick liquid and spoons for serving them. Adele swallowed hard, nodded, and thanked the woman.

Caelan's arms trembled with the effort of holding onto Adele. He let her go, his back hitting the bed as the air whooshed from his lungs in a sigh. He watched her, kicking himself for hurting her this way. "I'm sorry, Adele"

Adele looked at Caelan in confusion. "Baby, it's not your fault. Don't blame yourself for getting sick." She turned and took the cup of water, bringing it to his lips. "Drink this."

Adele looked at Caelan, almost angry. "Caelan, I know you don't believe me, but it's true. It's no one's fault that you're sick, so stop blaming yourself. I'm worried about you because I love you, and that's not your fault either." She paused, a wry smile coming onto her face. "Well, it is kind of your fault that I love you. But I'm glad it happened. Even if..." She trailed off, knowing that what she was going to say wouldn't help him. Adele changed directions. "Even if things don't work out, I'm glad I have you."

Adele laughed too, then grew more serious. "He likes you, you know. He keeps talking about you and how you're his best adult friend." The truth was that Alban had barely spent any time with Caelan, but kids do tend to jump to friends quickly. And Adele thought it was sweet that they got along.
