Jora’s fingers brushed the edge of the doorframe as she stepped out, her gaze immediately finding Sage. She didn’t need to see the way he’d been anxiously pacing to know that the weight of it all had been heavy on him too. The way his shoulders sagged in relief as soon as the tension shifted in the room hadn’t gone unnoticed by her.
She held her breath for a moment, biting back the rush of emotions that came flooding in with the quiet after the storm of words. Her father’s voice, always so sharp and commanding, had softened in the end, and the brief, fragile reassurance that he still loved her was enough to settle her nerves, but not enough to erase the sting of the conversation.
She wasn’t entirely sure how she felt about it—how she felt about him, or even about herself, now.
Jora looked at Sage, her lips pressed into a thin line. It wasn’t like she could explain it, not now. Not when she wasn’t even sure what she was feeling. But she could feel his eyes on her, that familiar concern in the way he stood up just as she stepped out. It was almost... comforting. Almost.
“I—” Her voice caught, and she let out a soft, breathy laugh, trying to ease the tension that still clung to her chest. “It’s not as bad as it seemed, I suppose. He’s... still here. Still trying.” Her tone wasn’t quite convincing, but it was the best she could do.
She straightened up a little, brushing off the remnants of her conversation with her father, as if it hadn’t left a mark on her at all. “We’ll be fine. I think... this might work.”
Jora gave him a quick glance, letting her words hang in the air before she took another step forward, careful to keep the quiet discomfort from showing in the way she moved.

Sage listened to Jora as she spoke, giving her the space she needed as she tried to comprehend everything that had just happened. He nodded softly after her comments about her father trying though, features softening slightly. "It was probably quite a shock for him," he admitted with a sort of shrug. "He'll probably need as much time as you," he added. Heck, it had even taken himself a bit of time to process it all. He still could barely believe it....he was going to father her child. They would have a family, something he'd always desperately wanted but knew better than to hope for.

After a moment or two though, he sighed softly and moved to grab their bags again, humming softly. "We should get to a room and just relax for a bit," he murmured. "Process things. Figure it all out, and what we're gonna do." They'd be here for nine while months....it was a long time to keep the charade going. A very long game.

But they didn't have any other options. They had to do this. And they had to do it without any mistakes. "I assume you have a room already," he asked after a moment, cocking his head slightly before realizing the automatic movement had left the soft points of his ears exposed, and quickly moved to correct the position so they were sufficiently covered.

Jora did, in fact, have a room....and they were there soon enough. He'd moved to set their things down, unpacking the simple things and all that. If they'd be here for nine months, and then however long after she'd given birth they needed for her to heal and the baby to grow strong enough to travel back to their island. Make sure it was healthy before bringing them to a remote place, cut off from civilization. They may as well make it home away from home.

Jora watched Sage as he spoke, feeling the weight of his words settle over her. The reality of it all was heavy, more than she had expected. She had spent so long trying to block out the possibility of her father ever trying to understand, and now that he had, she wasn’t sure what to do with it. But it did make sense—he would need time, just like her. Maybe this wasn’t a situation either of them had been prepared for.
When Sage suggested they find a room and relax, Jora couldn’t help but feel a small wave of gratitude. The thought of just... sitting, processing, without needing to talk or make decisions right away, was a relief. Nine months stretched ahead of them, and though they were only just starting to scratch the surface of what that time might look like, the weight of it was already sinking in. "Yeah," she agreed softly, her voice a little distant, "we should. There's a lot to think about."
His question about the room made her blink, though, and she nodded. "I do," she answered, though it seemed odd to talk about rooms now. It felt so... normal in the midst of everything else, as if the world outside the walls didn’t quite matter anymore. The whole situation was bizarre.
As they settled into the space, she followed him, glancing at the way he moved around, the quietness of his actions. There was an almost comforting steadiness in how he unpacked, like someone who’d been through far worse and had learned the value of patience. She couldn’t help but wonder how much of that came from the life he’d lived.
They would have to make this place a home, though. For now, at least. Her gaze lingered on the small details as Sage worked, making the space his own in quiet, unassuming ways. It would have to be enough. It *had* to be enough.

Sage had nodded when she'd mentioned she had a room, and followed her down a few of the hallways, mentally mapping out the ship as they went. he was fairly good with directions, and knowing the layout of your territory, even if it was just a ship, was important. He was well aware of how servants were treated...and knowing the little nooks and crannies, and the quickest way back to Jora, would be necessary to know. He couldn't really get into any fights, even in self defense, so if he sensed trouble he'd just have to hide or get back to her, plain as that. He was safe at her side. Well, slightly behind her too, in this case, but nearby her all the same.

Once they were in the room and he'd unpacked the necessary things, he moved to set up a few of the decorations he'd brought from home. It was an attempt to make this room feel like their home and island...a rather pathetic one, admittedly, since they couldn't afford to bring anything extra...but it was an attempt at that. He could certainly try.

Once that was all done, he moved back to Jora and flopping down on the bed next to her. He had missed the creak of the wooden boards of the ships. Being out on the ocean. But...he thought he missed their home more. He couldn't help but be worried about it...what if something happened? Nine months was a long time. They'd taked precausions but...mother nature was something that even the best architects and farmers and all the rest couldn't beat. He tried not to think about it too much....they had worse things to think about. More pressing issues.

He sort of glanced around the room after a few moments of silence, then looked back at Jora. "Is this where you grew up then," he asked quietly, not wanting to disturb the stillness. But...he also knew the doors weren't soundproof, so they had to be quiet in case soemone heard them talking. A servant shouldn't be talking so casually to Jora, and they'd know that. Of course, if they got intimate at all they wouldn't have to be so quiet, but he also knew they'd tease him about it if they weren't. No doubt they'd mess with him either way though. He wasn't sure they even could be intimate, since she was pregnant....he honestly wasn't sure how that all worked. He told his mind to shut up though. That obviously wasn't really a concern big enough to ler himself think about.

Jora's voice came out soft, as she shifted slightly to make herself more comfortable. She hadn't been expecting the question, but it wasn’t exactly out of the blue either. Sage had been silent for a while, staring at the walls like he was trying to figure out the history of the place just by looking at it. She could see the way his mind was working, the quiet worry lingering behind his eyes. She didn’t have to guess what he was thinking. Home. Their home. She didn’t know if he was more worried about what they left behind or about what was waiting for them ahead.
The truth was, she didn’t talk about her past much. She didn’t want to, but there was no avoiding it now. Not with Sage so close, not with the uncertainty that always seemed to creep in when they weren't in the familiar embrace of their island.
Jora looked around the room briefly, the corners of her lips turning down just slightly. It wasn’t exactly her childhood home, not in the way he'd probably imagine. It wasn’t a place filled with warmth and laughter, but it had been home—if only by circumstance. "I grew up here... or around here, I guess," she answered, her tone almost thoughtful. “This ship was home for a while after... well, after a lot of things happened. It’s not as bad as it seems, though." She shrugged, a flicker of something—regret, maybe?—crossing her features.
She met his gaze then, quiet and intense, the kind of look she could give him when she didn’t need to hide the tiredness in her eyes. “Not sure what you mean by *grew up*, though. Not sure anyone really grows up in places like this." The sharpness of her words wasn’t directed at him. She wasn’t angry. It was more like she was speaking to a past version of herself, one that had to endure things she was still working through.
“Anyway…” Jora leaned back, her hand brushing against his as she settled more comfortably beside him. She let out a breath, trying to push away the tension that clung to her thoughts. It felt strange to talk about herself, to share things like this when she was so used to keeping her guard up. “I don’t think it’s what you’re imagining. I mean, no warm hearth, no cozy little home to run to when you’re upset. Just... a lot of fighting and sailing." She chuckled softly, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes.
Then she paused, and her expression softened. “But it’s a good place for us to be right now. For what we need.” She glanced back at him, the smallest smile touching her lips.

Sage sort of turned his eyes to Jora as she mentioned growing up. He knew she wouldn't have been in the ship her whole childhood ....she'd lived by the orphanage for a while, which was how he'd first met her, all those years ago. But after her father had set sail with her, dropping him back off at the orphanage and then leaving, and taking Jora with him....he didn't know much about what had happened to her in the years from that day until they'd found each other again.

He heard the conflicting emotions in her voice as she spoke, noticed the tightening of her face. It was obvious this place didn't hold many super great memories for her. In fact, it quite seemed like it didn't hold any at all. He frowned slightly, though her tone lightened towards the end, and his own lips curved into a sort of soft smile as she looked back at him, and he nodded along softly.

"Maybe you'll be able to take some good memories back home with you," he murmured softly, eye moving to her stomach briefly, where he knew their child was steadily growing, preparing to enter this world. Hopefully, it would be dealt a better hand than he or Jora.

He'd do anything to make sure the baby never had to go through anything awful, or even really very bad. There would be some things, like scaping a knee or something, that were learning experiences.....but no one would harm this child. No one would look down on it. And he'd do anything to make sure Jora had the perfect life as well, with the perfect family. He hoped she knew that. "We may as well settle in," he mused after a moment. "Prepare ourselves for everything that's ahead of us." He did wish he had more time to build things like a crib, and maybe some toys ...but they couldn't bring it back in the canoe with them. It made that a bit harder, but that was ok. They'd figure it all out. They always did.

Jora smiles, "anything with you makes it a good memory" she says laughing softly. Just as Jora was about to respond to his comment on settling in, a soft knock echoed at the door, breaking the moment. The door creaked open, and a nurse in a crisp white uniform stepped in, her presence brisk yet warm. "Pardon the interruption," she said with a gentle smile, though there was a professional air to her that immediately put Jora on edge. "I’m here to check on the baby’s health. Standard procedure, just to make sure everything is progressing as it should."
Jora blinked, her stomach tightening instinctively. It had been a long while since anyone had been so directly involved in her pregnancy, and even though she knew it was necessary, she couldn’t help but feel the rush of anxiety. She glanced at Sage for a moment, seeking the comfort of his steady presence, before she nodded slightly.
The nurse moved toward the bedside, setting down a small bag she carried and pulling out a few instruments, her motions precise and efficient. "Nothing to worry about," she added, her voice reassuring, though it didn’t entirely ease Jora’s nerves. "This will be quick, just a routine check."
Jora shifted slightly, feeling the weight of Sage’s eyes on her, steady and calm. His presence alone grounded her, and she drew in a breath, focusing on that as the nurse began her work. The gentle pressure on her belly as the nurse checked the baby’s heartbeat was a strange comfort, reminding her that life was growing inside her, a life she would protect at all costs.
The nurse hummed in approval as she listened, her gaze flicking up to meet Jora’s. "Everything seems perfect," she said, offering a soft smile. "The baby’s heartbeat is strong, and all signs point to a healthy little one. You’re doing great."
Jora’s shoulders relaxed just a fraction, the tension easing out of her body. The weight of uncertainty that had been hovering around her—about whether she was doing everything right, about the child growing inside her—lifted a little. A healthy baby. It was more than she'd ever had before.

Sage chuckled softly in response to her comment, offering her a soft smile, reaching over to take her hand and squeeze it gently. "I think the same way," he agreed lightly, though his ears twitched as they picked up the footsteps right before the knock sounded at the door, moving to take his stance as a servant up again, acting as though he was working on putting things away still and Jora called for them to come in.

He felt his ears twitch slightly towards the nurse when the woman mentioned she was there to check up on the baby. While the nurse's back was turned, he sort of stoped his 'work' and watched, offering Jora a steady glance, though his own anxiety spiked as he thought about the fact that the baby might not be so healthy.

The baby was fine though, and he resumed his servant posture as the nurse turned around. He had to use his hair to hide the smile on his face, not able to keep it from forming as the nurse declared the baby was healthy, and so was Jora. The moment the nurse was gone, he practically flew at jora, planting a happy kiss on her lips, practically vibrating with excitement.

A healthy baby, and Jora was the one who'd mother it. It was theirs. They had a family. And despite all the possible dangers and the not knowing what would happen these next nine months....he couldn't help but be just so excited about it all.

When the nurse left, Jora was still in disbelieving joy that both the baby and she were healthy, Jora felt a rush of relief so powerful it almost knocked the breath out of her. She had to fight back tears, but it was hard when Sage was so clearly beaming at her, his smile contagious and full of pure joy. Before she knew it, he was practically flying at her, and Jora couldn't help but laugh softly, caught up in his excitement.
The kiss he planted on her lips was tender, filled with so much emotion that it made her heart race. She could feel his happiness vibrating through him, and it filled her up in ways she hadn't even realized she needed. A family. It was real. They had a family. And in that moment, all the fears and unknowns faded into the background as they stood there together, their future unfolding before them.

After the initial kiss, Sage just stood there in front of her, their foreheads resting lightly against each other. They just stood there, holding each other happily, just letting the emotions in the air swirl around them and wash over them. They didn't need words to convey what they were feeling....and maybe that was one thing he especially liked about their relationship. They could be quiet together. They could just...be.

"God, I can barely believe it all," he sort of murmured after a moment, choking out a sort of laugh. It had all sorts of welled up on him, leaving him breathless. Shaky, even. Fighting tears back. He had a family. And not just any family, but a good one that loved him as much as he could love them. It was a child produced by any sort of servant or slave related activities, or a drunken bout he had to recollection of. No ....this was his. Something he'd longer for his entire life, but never gave himself the hope of having. And now, all of a sudden, it all came crashing down on him, and his knees buckled. He found himself on his knees in front of Jora, still just holding her tightly. He'd sworn he'd never kneel before anyone ever again...but this was different. Very different. And he really couldn't be happier.
