Sage stirred slightly with a light groan and opened his eyes slowly before yawning and nodding. "anything in particular," he asked tiredly, sliding out from next to the girl and standing up. He was glad to hear that she was eating, though ...that was good. He wandered to he kitchen and grabbed a plate of some stuff before heading back and handing it to Mari.

Mari just shook her head. Really, she just wanted something light. She couldn't stomach anything heavy, but all the same, she needed the energy to heal and get better. She wondered if he was upset with her for not getting out of the way... she knew something would happen... she could have gotten out of the way before they'd tried anything because she did know they'd try. When he came back, she gave a sheepish smile and thanked him before sitting up, a yelp of complaint escaping her when her stomach pulled in sharply, but took a breath before reaching for the plate.

Sage handed her the plate, and reached out to help her when the pain crossed across her face. He helped her sit up, and fussed over her for a moment before she sort of shooed him away so she could eat. He sat down next to her, on the chair, reaching for Silas when he started cooing again, and gave him a bottle. He sort of just sat there tiredly, not wanting to leave either of them, not even for a second.

Mari shook her head when he fussed over her and moved to press a light kiss to his cheek after a moment. "I'm alright, promise," she hummed softly to the boy. She was thankful for his help, of course, she was, but he needed to relax a little bit. She took a few bites, though the movement just hurt. She wanted to go back to her own bed, and curl up in the warmth of her blankets... she wanted to be alright so that Sage wasn't so worried. She hated the strain on his face... he looked so tired, and all she wanted to do was hold him tightly, but if she even tried she'd just... hurt, and she knew that. "Please don't worry so much," she whispered to him before frowning. "You look exhausted," she told him after a few moments.

Sage had sat back when the girl had guided him away from her...he supposed she would want some space to eat and get her feelings about her and all the rest. He shrugged slightly when she said he looked tired, and shouldn't worry so much. "at least it means I'm doing something right," he groaned, shaking his head slightly. He was still beating himself up about not having moved the girl too...and he couldn't figure out why they'd shoot her. He was used to people trying to leave the girl alive, for later....he certainly hadn't thought they'd shoot at her. He was expecting to take the hit. He should have taken the hit. But...he hadn't. And now Mari was hurt, after having just barely not been hurting because of giving birth. He really did feel awful about it.

Mari shook her head at him after a few moments and frowned slightly. "I wish you wouldn't," she sighed softly to him. Was he upset she hadn't gotten out of the way? She could have. She'd have much rathered gotten shot than anything else that could have happened. She just didn't want him to be upset with her. "Are you mad?" She didn't see a reason for him to be mad... maybe it was because she was being stupid and didn't get out the way when she should have. She froze... she shouldn't have frozen. And she'd gotten hurt. She didn't even think they were aiming for her... maybe they were just trying to scare them, or maybe they didn't care who they shot. But they had gotten her, and there was nothing she could do about that, but at least she was getting better.

Sage sighed slightly and then cocked his head at the girl's question. Did he seem mad? He thought he'd just seemed relieved she was alright...but she obviously didn't think that's all that was going through his head. He shook his head in response to her question and then dropped his gaze. "not at you," he murmured softly. No, he wasn't mad at the girl. But he was mad ....mad at himself, for not having protected her enough. What was he thinking? Why should she marry him if he couldn't keep her safe? She shouldn't, that's what. But she'd never seemed to have that thought. Which was so odd to him....he'd half expected her to give the ring back. To see the bags of wedding supplies in the corner and not want anything to do with them. With him. But that hadn't been her response, not at all. He still couldn't help but be upset with himself.

Mari looked to him with a bit of doubt... she still felt like she should have stopped this from happening. She knew it wasn't his fault... he'd tried to protect her. He'd tried to get her out the way, but she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. She still knew he blamed himself for it all, though. She just wanted to make sure none of this was his fault. Whenever she got hurt, it was never his fault, and she wanted him to know that... but it would be fairly hard to get that across to him. "You're sure," she asked quietly, looking at her fingers where she sat. She knew this was... hard for him. She didn't want him awake all night, or running after her... it made her feel awful, really awful. It wasn't his job, and he already had the baby to look after while she was like this... he didn't need another person to try and care for.

Sage sighed when the girl asked if he was sure and leaned over to press a soft kiss to her head. "I'm sure," he murmured, resting his head next to her. "I just wish I could have done something," he admitted softly, closing his eyes. He did wish he could let it go...beating himself up over so many different things wasn't easy, and he did wish he could stop it, but he just wasn't sure how. He laced his fingers through hers after a moment with a slight sigh. "I'm just glad you're still here with us," he murmured after a moment, voice catching slightly, though he tried to hide it.

Mari tightened her hands around his when he did, her heart dropping just a bit when she heard his voice catch. She didn't want him to be so upset, or feel like something could have been done. She didn't want anything else from him than to just be there. His warmth was comforting. "Well... yeah, I'm here. It would have probably been worse if it wasn't for you," she told him gently before resting her head on his shoulder after a bit. "I just don't want to make your life harder," she whispered to him. She just felt bad. "I don't want you to feel like you have to look after me all the time," she eventually murmured, feeling her bottom lip quiver at the thought before swallowing so that she didn't seem too upset.
