Sage was well aware of the dangers that could come their way, so he kept Mari close to his side. He didn't show that he'd seen those men, or that he was worried, but he was definitely on edge. Seeing those men only made him more nervous, and he was well aware of everything that happened around them. (Bit short I'm on the run)

Mari was a little bit jumpy now... the worst thing you could do was let people know you were scared, but she was getting more worried about herself as time went on. She'd had a bit more self-preservation now that she'd had a child... and everything was just scaring her. She saw someone moving fast around them from the corner of her eyes, which was when she'd started to panic... they were being followed. "Sage," she whispered quickly, looping her arm through his. She knew Sage could see everything too... he'd seen the worse of everything down here... she just wanted to get back to her baby and the comfort of her room.

Sage glanced over at the girl and hummed lightly, squeezing her arm gently. "I'm thinking green decorations, with some white flowers and things," he told the girl in a rather pointed tone. Keeping a casual conversation would be a good thing, and might help her calm down a bit. But it also told her he knew they were being followed, and he knew what to do if they were attacked. He was just as worried as she was....if anything, he was more worried. He'd certainly seen more than she had, of the worst of it.

Mari glanced up at him when he squeezed her arm... he seemed calm. How did he always seem calm in situations like this? Like he always knew exactly what he was doing? She could look after herself to some extent, she'd learned some tricks from living out here, but she spent most of her time in the castle, so she wasn't as tuned up as she had to be. But she wanted to get back to her baby soon. As soon as she could manage. "And chairs with ribbons," she hummed quietly, as though she was trying to keep herself calm, imagining how she wanted their wedding... though that meant she wasn't focusing, and when a bullet went past her eyes, she practically froze... her heart all that she could hear for those few moments.

Sage had learned how to have his brain focused on two very different things a long time ago. So he talked with Mari, giving the girl his full attention. But he was also keenly aware of the men behind them. The time in the castle hadn't seemed to make his instincts go away...perhaps because he was still so weary of pretty much everyone there. When he heard the gun though, he tugged Mari to the side slightly so she wasn't hit, whipping himself around and letting his own shot off, dropping the man with the gun he saw easily. He'd taken the gun from the doctor...the doctor had some rifles, and while it wasn't his preferred weapon, he wanted to kill them from a distance...he wasn't sure Mari would want him rolling about in a brawl to the death with someone.

Mari felt her breath hitch just after a yelp escaped her when he shoved her out of the way, though she'd heard another gunshot before Sage had started to shoot. She looked at the maybe two men wide-eyed, though they were soon on the floor, and so was she. At some point during this whole kerfuffle, she'd sustained two gunshot wounds, both to the stomach... she hadn't even felt it at first, not until everything had calmed down... she was so full of adrenaline it wasn't throbbing at all. Though, her eyes soon started to water and roll down her cheeks as she held a hand to her stomach, only for it to be absolutely soaked with blood... she wasn't sure if Sage had noticed, but her head was dizzy... and she was struggling to say something through short breaths.

Sage had barely noticed the girl fall...he had pushed her, so he didn't think much of it at the time. He just wanted to eliminate the competition before someone got hurt. Once the men were dead, he turned back to Mari, only to freeze in terror when he saw the blood. He cursed and practically lept at the girl, kneeling beside her and tearing the bottom strip of her dress to wind it around her abdomen before putting the bags on his arm and scooping her up. "We're almost back to the castle," he told the girl. "You'll be alright." he was telling that to himself too, really...he was terrified that he'd lose her. He couldn't lose her...how would he manage? He didn't realize how close they were until he staggered into the doctor's office. The doctor lept to his feet at the sight and got to work as soon as Sage set the girl down on the cot. The doctor had handed Sage Silas right away, and Sage just grasped the sleeping baby tightly, sliding to the floor, wide-eyed and trembling. God, he couldn't lose her. Not now. Why hadn't he kept her closer? Stood in front of her at least? It should have been him laying on that cot...not her. Not now.

Mari could only nod to Sage when he spoke to her, not daring to try and talk in fear of losing any kind of oxygen... the bullets had hit her in the stomach, both very close to each other... she didn't have a clue what the doctor would do about it, but something, hopefully. She didn't want to leave Sage, or baby Silas... she trusted the doctor, although she didn't have a clue what was happening, for she'd passed out by then. She could hear him trying to talk to her, and when she'd been picked up... she'd tucked her head into his chest so that she wasn't being thrown about... she heard the doctors voice after a while, though, her ears were still ringing awfully.

Sage sort of just...sat there, holding the baby tightly, watching the doctor patch the girl up. It took a while...but eventually the old man stepped back with a heavy sigh. "I think she'll pull through," he murmured to a quite frazzled Sage. "I could patch her up alright. She's lost a lot of blood, so she'll be out for a while, but she'll be alright." He patted sage on the shoulder and left, returning soon with a small crib to put Silas in if sage wanted to. Sage stayed there cradling the boy for a while, before slowly getting up and pulling the crib and a chair over to the bedside. He tucked the sleeping baby down in his crib, and he sat down in the chair before leaning forward to take Maris limp hand in his and rest his torso on her lap, where it wouldn't hurt, leaving the chair propping his lower body up. He eventually fall asleep, all the stress and worry clouding his brain. (It might be nice if the queen finds out what happened and comes in and maybe starts being more supportive of them? Like she totally ships it but is trying not to show it all the time?)

(Yeah I'll do that... maybe when Mari wakes up? Or would you rather do it now?) Mari couldn't see anything... it was dark, and her head was swirling in the most horrendous kind of ways. Her hearing had gone a while back now, so she couldn't hear anything. Sages comforting words were long gone, and nothing the doctor said registered with her anymore. She was scared... very scared, and she couldn't even begin to describe the pain she was in, she really couldn't. She just wanted to be held... she was cold, so, so cold... she felt a slight weight on her legs, though it was comforting, to some extent. She wondered of Sage was alright... had he been hurt too? She hoped to hell not.
