Sage was admittedly a bit confused when she handed him the little carrot. He stared at it for a moment before unfolding himself and sitting up, facing the girl, looking at her curiously. He honestly had no idea what the girl was up to, and was even more confused when she pulled a cat out of a crate. He gave her a rather bewildered look, cocking his head slightly. "I have absolutely no idea," he informed the girl, his voice quiet but better than the grunt he'd given her earlier. He yawned slightly and sort of rubbed his eyes with one hand, supporting himself with the other. Having a conversation was helping a bit...at least, it was distracting him from a lot that was in his head. So, that was good. But he was still confused as to why he was holding a fake carrot and Mari had a kitten. His brain wasn't running quite fast enough to figure that one out.

She smiled lightly to the boy when he seemed to be a little bit more alert now... well, he was sitting up and talking, so that had to be good. She kind of bumped his shoulder in a friendly manner before ticking the little animal under the chin. "Well, I was speaking to the doctor a couple of days ago, and I told him about how you'd gotten on with Ginger," she started before looking over to the boy, her eyes still bright and exited looking. "And I've been thinking about this for a while, but the doctor and I agreed that it would be good for you to have a... companion. And we decided something smaller would be better than you dragging the horses up here because god knows I wouldn't be able to come with you if I did," she hummed lightly with a bit of a chuckle before shaking her head and gesturing to the cat who'd made herself comfortable in her arms. "So he said I could get you a cat," she chirped lightly.

Sage blinked slowly, still quite obviously bewildered at the girl's explanation. He took a moment to process everything the girl was saying, and once he did, he was even more confused. "You...got me a cat," he restated, more of a question than anything else. It seemed too good to be true, especially now. He looked down at the tiny carrot in his hand, raising it to look at it for a moment, the stuff inside it crinkling at the slight movement. The kitten pricked her ears and wriggled in Maris arm, trying to get to the toy, and Sage looked at the kitten once it moved, his eyes clearing up a little bit. He was still rather confused, and his brain was spinning...but he supposed it didn't really matter. If they did get him a cat, then he was glad ....it didn't matter why or how necessarily, he could ask questions later. Right now, he just wanted to meet the kitten...he was tired but not tired enough to completely ignore the animal.

Mari nodded to the boy and let the cat go to the boy when she tried to get to the toy. "Yeah... I hope you'll like her," the girl hummed lightly as she watched the cat scramble onto the boys lap and tried to claw onto the toy. Her eyes had gone huge by now, and it really was amusing. She could tell he was a little bit confused... but he'd come around in the next couple of days. "I got her a bed and food and things too, so you're all set up for a little while," she hummed lightly. She knew he was having a tough time... and she was going to give him the animal in a day or two, but she thought it would be good for him to have her now. Seeing her playing and running about might make the boy a little bit livelier.

Sage watched the kitten scramble over and leap at the toy happily. Once his brain caught up with the flurry of movement, he sort of moved the carrot around to play with the kitten. She scrambled around his bed for a moment before catching the carrot and hopping into his lap, settling there before looking up at him happily. He reached over to stroke her gently, almost heasitantly, like he was afraid it was a dream and she'd dissapear if he touched her too hard. At the sound of her purr, it all sort of came flooding in. He had a pet...a cat....and she was absolutely amazing. He felt a knot in his throat and his eyes sort of welled up against his will. He wasn't quite sure why he was crying... probably because it was such a shock and he was so tired, and... everything else. The cat pricked her ears and stood up to kind of crawl up hid torso, putting her front paws up on his chest to lick the tears from his cheek, which of course made him sob harder. He sort of just grabbed the kitten and hugged her to his face, kind of just rocking back and forth trying to calm himself again. "Sorry," he managed to stammer out to Mari after a moment. "She's perfect," he choked out, knowing the girl would probably be a bit confused as to why he was sobbing...though she seemed to understand it at least a bit, so maybe she'd get this too.

Mari watched the two for a moment, a light smile still painted across her face. She looked a little bit confused when his eyes started to well up with tears, but he didn't seem sad... she felt a slight chuckle escape her when he said he apologised, and went to run her fingers softly through his hair as she sat next to him, shaking her head ever so slightly. "Don't be sorry," she mused lightly before going to stroke the little kitten's back as the animal continued trying to lick the boys tears from his cheeks. She felt another light smile across her face, glad that the boy was happy with the animal. "I know you like her but you don't need to cry about it," she mused, though he knew he'd cry if he needed to... and she'd hope that he knew she'd sit with him for however long he needed her to.

Sage leaned into he girl when she sat down next to him, sniffing and trying to rein in the tears. It didn't really work all that well, but whatever. He just sort of sobbed his eyes out for a while, though he gradually calmed down enough to wipe the tears (and cat spit) off his face. He murmured an apology again, though he knew the girl had already said he didn't have to apologize, but he felt better doing it. It was just what he was used to. The cat settled back down into his lap soon enough, and he just sort of stroked it.

Mari was a little bit surprised to see him the way he was... she had always thought of him as being so... brave. Like nothing could faze him. It was the first time she'd seen him in such a state, but she found that she didn't really care. It almost made the boy seem more... human. She just sat with him for a little bit, her fingers still running through his hair while he leaned on her until he'd settled down a little bit more. She let it be quiet for a little while before wiping a stray tear from his cheek with her thumb and slipping off the bed to grab a cloth so that he could clean his face off. She then sat the other way around so that she was actually on the bed next to him, and gave a little bit of a chuckle, albeit a very light one. "Alright?" She hummed lightly as she patted his chest in a friendly manner.

Sage chuckled a bit sheepishly after the girl had wiped his face off and had settled back down on the bed next to him. He nodded slightly and yawned, still stroking the cat absentmindedly. "I think so," he sighed, rubbing his face with his free hand. He was even more tired now....but he did feel a bit better. "Thanks." He looked back down at the kitten curled up in his lap, the ghost of a smile flickering on his face. "How'd you manage all of this?"

"...all this?" The girl repeated with a slightly cocked head. "You mean the cat?" She asked with a chuckle. In truth, she hadn't done much. She'd just found the animal, not much else... but she could see it meant a bit to Sage... he just seemed happy, with that barely visible smile of his. "I picked her up last night," she hummed as she looked at the animal, who'd curled up in his lap... they were sure to get along, the kitten and Sage. "I asked the doctor about it when we got back from mine... I was going to wait to give her to you but it seemed like you needed her," she mused lightly before shaking her head. "She's gonna need a name, you know. You can't just call her 'the cat' for the next fifteen years," the girl mused.
