Mari looked over at him with a bit of a nod when he said to add their supplements in... she had to admit, the prospect of seeing foals in the spring was... exciting. Well, other than the fact that foals meant moody mares, but she was excited all the same. Even if she didn't get near them, they were sweet from a distance. She went to grab the buckets of the horses he'd named to do those first before looking back up at him, only to see a bit of a... clouded look in his eyes. He seemed to have random episodes like that quite a lot, at least from what she'd seen. She found herself wondering what he was thinking right then so that she could say something lighthearted to pull him out of it. Give him something else to think about, like she was sure the doctor would have wanted her to do. But the simple fact was that she didn't know him well enough for that. The doctor said it would take time, and the truth was that she was a bit... scared about what he'd say. All he needed was a friend right now, though, and the least she could do was be engaging. "I think it's true," she hummed lightly. "Even I think a good horse is worth a lot." She added lightly as she started scooping the required oats into the food. "I take it that horse you like - Chaos - is a good horse?" She asked curiously. She hadn't had the best experience with the animal... but what if Sage liked him then he had to be at least half decent.

Sage found himself working furiously, desperately trying to keep certain memories at bay. He looked over at the girl in surprise when she started talking...he'd almost forgotten she was there. But for once he was glad she was...talking to someone about Chaos might help keep the worse thoughts away. So, he nodded and glanced in the direction of his paddock. "I found him when I first came here," he murmured. "That was...a long time ago. Things have changed," he sighed. He'd changed, and so had everyone else. "But not him. He's always been there. I trust him more than I can trust most people," he murmured. He really did love the horse...and he knew the maid didn't really like animals, but he had a feeling that if she met one she really liked, she trust it just as much as he trust Chaos.

Mari gave a light smile to the boy as he spoke about the animal... she could tell she really cared about the horse, she really could. "I think he likes you, too," she murmured lightly. "I had... an encounter with him not so long ago. Not my cup of tea," she hummed after a moment or so with a bit of a laugh. Well, it certainly wasn't a humorous laugh. More like a nervous chuckle. She looked thoughtful for a moment or so before shaking her head. "You were here a few years ago, weren't you?" She asked out of the blue... she was suddenly very curious about the whole thing... especially because he'd shown up out of thin air and then disappeared again in the space of a year or two. "That horse of yours has done a fair bit of travelling. He's been halfway across the world and back I swear it. And I'd like to bed that he hasn't told any of your secrets," she noted with a huff as she started stacking up a couple of the finished feeds. She assumed the pregnant mares would be fed first... then the stallions, then the mares and geldings. So she made them in that order. "All done," the girl noted after another fifteen or so minutes.

Sage chuckled dryly. "He can have a bit of a temper," he hummed when the girl noted she'd had a less than pleasant encounter with the stallion. He looked over at her and cocked his head slightly when she asked if he'd been here before. "Yeah....I hadn't expected anyone to notice much." He raised an eyebrow and hummed thoughtfully when she mentioned the horse travelling. "Really? I'll have to ask him about all of his adventures," he mused in a rather amused way. He nodded when the girl noted she was done...he'd been gathering feed buckets up to start taking them out. "I'll take the buckets to the mares....they're close to foaling and are...not the easiest to manage sometimes. You take those four buckets to the geldings in those four stalls. They're all pretty chill and will stare at you until you give them the food since they're too lazy to try and take it," he chuckled, pointing to the horses he told her to go to.

She nodded lightly at him... well, everyone knew he was there. Who did he think had to clean up after him and Luther? She'd never done it, she worked for the queen, but she'd been on the receiving end of the complaining from the maid that had been assigned to him. "You weren't quiet - especially not when you and Luther were running around. Or tidy. That was about all I remember," she noted with a bit of a chuckle. The girl nodded lightly when he told her to see to the geldings, and picked up the buckets she'd stacked up before wandering over to the stables... just as the boy had said, the horse just stared at her until she gave it the food. The thing didn't even bother coming up to the stable door to see her. Actually, the animal just waited for her to leave before it started to eat. The other three done the same thing, pretty much. She watched the last one over the door for a moment, a slight smile on her face as she turn off. "Lazy things," she murmured to herself before wandering back towards Sage. "Well, from the conversation you were having with him yesterday, I'm sure he'd be thrilled to tell you about his travels," she teased lightly while she followed him around as he dropped off each feed... he had a lot more horses to drop feeds to than she did.

Sage chuckled slightly, remembering the good times he'd had with Luther. "Yeah, well...it's a lot quieter now," he murmured sadly. He missed the boy, just as much as he missed Lizzie almost, really. He wrinkled his nose slightly when she teased him about talking to the horse, and he threw an amused glance in her direction. "Well, maybe he'll tell better jokes than you will then," he hummed lightly. He got to the section of the barn with the broodmares in it and reached an arm out to stop the girl. "Stay here or your likely to get kicked or not," he huffed before stepping into the section of the barn. Immediately, a chestnut head shot out of a seemingly empty stall, ears pinned and a vicious sounding noise coming from her throat. Sage dodged her easily and reached over to press a hand to her nose and push her back. "Oh, don't be such a baby," he huffed. The mare backed up slightly, eyeing him as he poured food into her trough before diving at it as he walked away. He walked to the other stall and frowned when the mare inside it didn't immediately shoot out like the other one. Snowball, the white mare inside the sta, usually had the worst temper out of all of them. He shot a concerned glance at Mari and stepped closer to peer into the stall. His eyes widened when he saw the mare laying on her side panting, and slipped into the stall after a quick yelp, dropping the pail of food as he went. The mare was foaling...and obviously having a hard time of it. He'd completely forgotten Marj was there...his only focus was helping the white mare.

The girl rolled her eyes at him. "My jokes are just fine! I'll have you know I think I'm very funny," she chirped with a bit of a laugh, knowing a lot of the things she said could be described as... cheesy, or more like something you'd expect to come out the mouth of somebodies father. That would never change, though... that was just... her. If she saw the opportunity to make a bad joke then she'd absolutely take it. She paused as instructed when the boy went into the mares wing, and quietly kicked a pebble around for a bit until she caught a rather worried look from Sage, then watched him dart into the stable after a second or two... she felt a slight wave of worry run through her after a few moments, then she felt herself move forwards without really realising it, walking at a fairly quick pace until she could see just over the door. The mare was on her side, letting out all kinds of pained sounds, and there seemed to be legs slashing around... well, everywhere. She paled at the sight at looked towards Sage with an obvious look of concern. "Do you need anything... should I get anything? Or anyone?" She asked quickly, a slightly ill feeling pitting in her stomach.

Sage darted around all the legs, trying to get to a spot behind the mare where he wouldn't get kicked. He knelt behind the mare and ran his hands over the spot where the foal was at and winced slightly. "Maybe get some pain meds...a shot. The foal's backwards, and she can push through if she's able to calm down and not spend all her energy thrashing about," he instructed the girl. "I need two of the large syringes full...thirty millimeters or so. She weighs a bit more than a human." He could do some, and he could help the mare out a bit, but it would be most of her work that would get them through. He moved to the mare's head, and she moved it to rest in his lap, eyes rolling as he stroked her and murmered softly, trying to calm the white horse down. She had to pull through...she just had to. He couldn't handle losing both of them right then.

The girl nodded and darted off to the feed room... the place normally had a lot of veterinary medicine and tools, so she could only hope that it would have something for the pain. There were mates in foal pretty much all year round, so there was always a stash somewhere. She rummaged around the carbinate until she found something that was labelled for pain... and it was safe for pregnant mares, so she could only hope it would do something. She found a needle... a big one, and filled it to the thirty milimeters line as Sage said. She then grabbed a couple of blankets from a shelf... she wasn't sure why, but she had a feeling it would help, at least a little. She then rushed herself back towards Sage. She looked over the door to see the mare his her head in Sages lap, and then forced herself to walk into the stable, carefully avoiding thrashing legs and handed the syringe to the boy... she then put the blankets down. She forced herself to sit just next to him, kind of just watching the mare... normally, with a vet, breach births weren't much of an issue. But they weren't vets... that meant the foals, and the mares chances weren't high. She couldn't imagine this boy had delivered many foals... but she trusted he'd do what he thought was right for the mare, and her foal. And she'd help where she could.

Sage stayed at the mares head while the girl scurried, off desperately trying to calm her down. Though, he wasn't sure it helped very much...the white horse was still obviously frightened and in a lot of pain. He reached for the needle the girl held once she got back, and stuck it in the mares back muscle, like he'd seen the grooms do to other horses. The mare calmed down quite a bit, though was still obviously scared, and having a difficult time. She was exhausted now...covered in sweat and lather and the like. He gestured for the girl to take his place, with no room for argument. He just sort of grunted "hold" and moved. He went to the back of the mare, pressing on her abdomen to help her push, as he'd seen the vets do before. "Come on baby," he whispered. "Come on." He himself had a sheen of sweat covering his skin already, and was panting. The horse had to be fine. After another few minutes had gone by, the mares pushes had weakened considerably. "Come on girlie, your baby's halfway there," he hummed, desperately wishing the mare not to die. "Push goddamit," he he eventually yelled in frustration, before groaning and shaking his head. "I can't believe I'm doing this," he grumbled before reaching his arm in and grabbing the foal, pulling when the mare pushed. He'd seen this once, and he was terrified he'd mess something up, but if he didn't they'd both most likely die so....it couldn't hurt could it? After another few minutes, the mare had stopped pushing for a few tense moments before giving it one last shot. Sage yanked as hard as he could at that point, and the foal slithered out of the mare. He fell backwards, the foal landing on top of him, mewling for her mother. Sage moved the filly into a position where the mare could raise her head and lick the foal, and sage just slumped against the stall, seemingly just as exhausted as the mare. And, well...about as messy as the both of them combined.
