For me it was my mental health and wanting people to like me. After a lot of therapy I’ve realised I don’t need to do dumb stuff like that. My bf is amazing and he supports me, he doesn’t smoke or drink himself

Dimmy Yeah, this was ages ago, back when my dad would be allowed to go inside a liquor store and buy some for my grandfather lol

I don't disagree dimmy, but some people just don't have the willpower to do it alone--there has to be a system to help them overcome that I mean my hubby knows he's got tendencies to alcoholism in his genetics, so he limits himself at all times. but he has a ridiculous willpower and self-motivation

Oh wow Whisper! I'm amazed he would make them do that. I'm assuming that's before there were studies on addictiveness and all

hollow- youre more then allowed to set some boundaries with your partner about it as well! like no smoking in the house, or have one room designated to it for example. when my partner and i first got our house that was a big rule we had prior to purchase (luckily all our rentals didnt allow indoor smoking, so he was already in the habbit of smoking outside ) but we set the rule to garage only, as the previous owners already smoked there so i didnt care but wanted to keep the house clean / smoke free

yeah if you have addictive history in your family it's often best to steer 100% clear rather than be tempted, but it's certainly easier said than done

Mellow, Yes same here. When I was 19 I moved from my VERY small town to live in dorms at uni 4 hours away. I fell into some horrible habits from my peers. I grew up very sheltered so I wanted to try everything. Vapes were terrible bc they were so easily accessible and cheap enough. And they tasted amazing lol I still have the voice in my head telling me to vape. Even tho it’s been 2 years since I last touched one

Although I stand by it, if you set values and standards for yourself and keep to them you can avoid being drawn into that to an extent

Stress is a big factor in me smoking (and starting originally) - but growing up with my dad constantly smoking kind of helped pave the way, even though I swore I would never do it, as it essentially is what lead him to his grave. Stress is a better factor than what my dad and his brother were put through as kids - my grandfather didn't want them smoking, so made them sit down and smoke an entire pack together (made them super sick) - but they both just carried granddad's addiction genes and eventually picked it up anyways

I don't like the idea for myself either but I completely get where people are coming from--which is why support systems are so important

totally agree dimmy!! had to learn all that the hard way in my teens lol but i feel like i got all that "party mentality" out of my system super young lol so now in my late 20s i like to be in bed by like 9pm xD

dimmy that feels dismissive of the struggles with abuse, mental health, and access that a lot of people have which is why they turn to addictive substances

See I never had any interest in people who smoked or drank in high school. I avoided them. I'd never date anyone who smoked. It's easy to not get in those situations, you just have to set standards of respect and value for yourself

Yeah, I get that :( my parents ( especially my mum) were very anti smoking so I never got exposed to that really as a child. I’m still fairly young now so living with my BF is my first real exposure to smoking households. It’s been very eye opening

ohhh yesss ... the vapes got me good lol the flavoured ones taste SOO good and gave me a good boost when i was gettting tired at work , lasted longer and were cheaper then constantly buying energy drinks lol
MellowMares
