stella - yeah lots of them do that to be honest, but it is still a very sweet gesture.

What's your guys consultation fee? The vets I use is £43-£45 but another vet who specialise in small animals costs about £50-55

100% when one of my pets had to be put down, they sent a card out. After the bill had been paid lol but I still found it very sweet
Gaelic Gladiacres
I agree, yeah! I appreciate when they do that, really just makes sense in my opinion
Cloud Peak Stables
Yes, for sure. My closest vet charges $200 up front if you bring the animal TO THEM and then that amount is taken from the total at the end. I think that's completely fair given that they pretty much have to triage emergencies all day every day.
Gaelic Gladiacres
all that to say... lol if you've got a good vet, tell them how much you appreciate them. it makes all the crap worth it!
BlackRose
Oh definitely, the call outs aren't mega expensive but that on top of all the treatment etc does add up lol! I do believe places like America etc overall would be a bit more expensive than UK
Gaelic Gladiacres
stella - that feels so inexpensive compared to over here lmao oof cloud - uuuugh yeah. my mom has all kinds of horror stories...
BlackRose
That's definitely understandable, I don't own horses but I did look after and care for some and their vet bills weren't cheap, the call out fee was about £50 maybe a little more.
Gaelic Gladiacres
and then there's insurance and supplies, equipment upgrades, payment and record systems... like it's no wonder the small practices of yesterday have been snapped up by corporations, they're the only ones with the power to actually keep the damn thing afloat
Gaelic Gladiacres
yeah - they've basically got "house call" baked in, their equipment for the most part has to be mobile, there're more years of education to get through, the clientele is generally smaller (although *some are wealthy, which can help but), and the hours are crazy. and that's not counting if you work at a hospital, which would necessitate huge amounts of space and lots of capital to start in the first place (even if you just join staff not own the place)
Cloud Peak Stables
Yeah, it's too bad. I don't like getting the bill but I understand why they charge what they do.
BlackRose
Normal vets are expensive but horse vets are way more expensive if I'm correct?
Gaelic Gladiacres
cloud - yeah, you're absolutely right. the industry is basically in crisis at the moment, especially for rural and large animal vets
Cloud Peak Stables
I never like when I have to take an animal to the vet, but in my area of the US, I'm just thankful we have a vet at all. It's not an easy career and they don't typically make that much money. I think there's a good deal of burnout in the industry because of that.
