Gale’s pulse still hammered in his chest as he sprinted through the woods, the pain in his side burning with every step. His mind was racing, adrenaline pushing him forward, but his thoughts were scattered. Suddenly, through the thudding of his heart, he heard it—her voice, unmistakable. “Gale, stop!” The shout cut through the distance like a knife, freezing him in place for a brief moment. His eyes darted around, trying to make sense of the sound. Kayla? Before he could move again, he heard the unmistakable sound of footsteps, running toward him. The trees shifted, and the noise grew closer. No, not now... His body tensed, caught between the fear of being pursued and the faint hope that maybe—just maybe—she wasn’t with the bounty hunters. But before he could decide, the footsteps grew louder, and his heart skipped, the confusion threatening to slow him down.

He nodded at her words, eyes still wide as she approached. "I know, they will though." Gale explained hurriedly, gesturing to the group of guards quickly gaining on them, resulting in him pulling the dagger out of his neck and wheezing slightly, taking off once more.

"Fuck" Kayla muttered, taking down more guards. She killed nearly half of them before she saw the pile on top of Gale. "No!" She yelled, ripping them off of him and seeing red around the edges of her vision

The guard holding the sword to his throat went to stab it, being ripped off of Gale as he let out a yelp. The sword went down, going at a angle yet going through the front of his throat, his hand reaching out and pulling it, tossing it aside as he turned onto his side, coughing up a sputter of blood before standing and heaving his way into the forest, some of the guards attempting to tag along to the limping figure.

Gale limped farther into the woods, guilt consuming him from leaving Kayla behind. He slumped against a tree and coughed up more blood, wheezing slightly with each breath, just wanting it to end.

Once every guard was dead, Kayla went to Gale. Her face was splattered with blood and mud but she just knelt beside him and pulled out the needle and thread silently
