( what if he knew her brother? like childhood freind?) I sweat i recognized the familiar face infront of me, perhaps a neighbor i had once or mabye seen her at the highschool i graduated from? I quickly fixed my gaze from staring at an elderly woman as i zoned out. "Oh yeah sorry, that'll be.. 6.34 please." I take the ten dollar bill that she eventually handed to me with a warm smile as i do every customer, I counter her change. " Your change is 3.66, If you would like to round down to a flat 3 the extra 66 cents will go to keeping this cafe running?" I raise up and down my eyebrows, a teasing way of manipulation. |

(ooh yeah) "Sure, keep the change." She murmured, walking away and over to the group of her friends who has already gathered at a booth. "Hey guys!" Emery said cheefully, sliding into a seat as she awaited her coffee. The whole group all caught up on everything, who was cheating on who, turns out it was all fake, and so on. Eventually she excused herself to the restroom, not looking where she was going before bumping into the person who was bringing her drink and spilling it all on him. |

"Shoot!" He exclaimed his WHITE shirt now covered in coffee, it burned his skin, he looked to the person who knocked it from his hands. "Really?" He groaned grabbing a wet cleaning rag cleaning it up every slighty, "You better keep you head up instead of staring at the ground , sunshine." He exaimened her shocked face, "I know you, You were Nate's sister right? let me see... Emery, right?" He said slightly wincing at the now red marks on his arms, mabye even on his chest but he couldn't take his shirt off in the middle of his Dad's coffee shop not very "Employee of the Month". |

"Oh!" She yelped, turning and instantly reckognizing the figure. "Elias?" Emery asked, her entire childhood flashing behind her eyes. "Yeah, i'm his sister." She murmured, swallowing hard. "You were uhm, Nate's best friend, yeah, I remember now." Her throat tightened at the memory of her brother, the way he still laughed even while his heart moniter stopped beeping, how he was always there when their parents were'nt. The woman blinked back tears, tearing her gaze away from him. "Sorry. . . I should get going." She managed quietly, voice breaking a bit at the end as she turned and walked out, not wanting any additional conversation. |

He stood there, watching her leave, mabye wishing she would come back?.. He shook his head returning to his job of tending to the customers and making drinks, he eventually got off, drove home, ate dinnner and showered, He got out of the shower his hair wet and stuck to his forehead, he eximef the ref marks on his chest, it was red and slowly blistering, It was tender. He winced touching it, He grabbed his nearby Medivval bandage and wrapped up his chest with just a few tender pain shocks. He decided he needed to shave, but he knew no matter how many times he shaves he goigng to have a little stubble, he diddnt mind it. After he finished he went to his bed and layed down, too tired to even get dressed. But his mind returned to the coffee shop... Emery, the girl he liked in 8th grade. |

Emery eventually arrived home, her parent's cars gone, a note taped on the fridge which read; Gone to Kansas City for work, be back in a week. She just sighed, tossing it in the trash as she wished that her parents could stay there forever. God she hated them. She hated them so much, she was sure if they died she honestly wouldn't care. They hadn't even attended any of her award ceremonies, none. Didn't even know Nate was dead until they recieved a bill in the mail and blamed Emery for not helping. Her eyes watered at the thought of it. They hadn't even known he was dead until she told them, yet they still just said 'he'll come back around'. A tear slid down her face. The woman quickly wiped it away. He'd only died a year ago. Another tear slid down. This one, however, did not get wiped away. Emery shut the fridge, letting the tears fall freely now as she walked up the stairs to her room, flopping down on her bed and grabbing her phone. Who had all visited while he was in the hospital? She opened her messages, clicking on a old contact she never thought she'd text again. The memory of her late brother shining too briliantly in him. Elias Rowan. |

His phone buzzed in his pocket. He almost ignored it, expecting another work notification, but when he pulled it out and saw the name on the screen, everything inside him… stopped. Emery.
For a moment he forgot how to breathe. His grip tightened around the phone, thumb hovering as a mix of old guilt, warmth, and something he wasn’t ready to name washed over him. His chest ached—same place it always did when he thought about Nate. He swallowed hard, leaning his forearms on the kitchen counter, staring at her message like if he blinked, it might disappear. After a long, shaky breath, he typed back. “Emery? …I wasn’t expecting to see your name tonight.”
There was a pause before he added,
“Are you okay? You sound like… something’s wrong. I’m still here, if you need me.” He reread it once, twice, fighting the urge to say more. |

She felt her phone buzz, looking at the text and almost not responding before finally typing something out. Wasn't expecting to be texting yours. She sent first, seeing his next text. Yeah just, seeing you brought back when Nate was still here and how the three of us would go everywhere together, now we haven't talked in a year and i'm pretty sure you know how it makes me feel even thinking about him. Emery added, feeling it was a little extreme before adding another. That was a little much, sorry |

He was laying in bed, his hair still damp and his eyes baggy, Yeah, I still really miss him Em, he brought light in every room he went too. The next couple hours was them texting and growing closer. He woke up the next morning with a smile on his face, his hair dry as he comved it and used texterizing powder, He cleansed his face and saw a huge Pimple on his face. Well, what the hell!? He groans, wanting to actually go to work, but luckily he wouldn't be late. He threw his pillow cases away and stopped at the store to get a new fresh one, he threw it on his kitchen counter. Its already 9:30!? Once he arrived at the coffee shop people were lined at the counter, he put his apron on. Hi welcome what can i get you. He said that to 100 people before finally he saw Emery. Well Good mornin' My fingers are still cramping from responding to you million questions. he chuckled taking her order. I showed up to the Funeral, I want you to know that, I even visited him at the hospital. He exhales slowly, all the memories flooding back in. Emery laughed, cried, and wanted to smack Elias through the screen numerous times while they were texting, eventually sending a goodnight text and heading to bed. She awoke to another brilliantly blue and warm morning, getting out of bed and slipping down to the kitchen. The woman decided to skip making breakfast, figuring she could get some at the coffee shop, which also meant more time wiht Elias. . . so it was a win win either way. Em walked back upstairs and changed into a pair of baggy jeans and a tight ribbed t-shirt, the shade more of an azure blue which complemented her eyes. She slipped on a pair of Addidas Sambas and headed to her bathroom to do her hair. Em brushed her hair out, having slept in braids so now it was nice and wavy, looking almost perfect. -Easy, see? Didn't even have to go to the salon, just saved money right there.- She thought, chuckling a smidge at the thought as she did her usual lashes and called it a day, brushing her teeth quickly before starting the mile walk to the cafe. More so, to Elias. |
