Eliza scowled at him the moment they were facing each other and alone, her arms crossing over her chest. "Do you think I could possibly be any happier to marry you? I only found out this morning, as I assure you if I had known in advance I would have done anything to prevent this," she hissed, the sweet little princess act having dropped in completeness. She knew that Ian was the logical match, but what happened to courting? To finding someone you could actually rule beside without conflict? Ian was nothing but conflict with her! She huffed, looking away as she fiddled with the skirt of her gown. When he spoke again her eyes snapped to him, narrowing at the words he spoke. "Really? You want to spend the evening dancing and talking happily with me? Acting as if we will be the most perfect couple in the world?" She scoffed, her hands resting on her hips. "You can't possibly think that'll work. We hardly go two minutes without arguing."

"I want my crown, and I want nothing to do with you. I could get both if you'd just go along with it," he growled, his eyes darting back and forth, constantly on guard to make sure no one was listening.

The truth was, Eliza was the only person Ian could talk to without feeling embarrassed. Whether it was talking casually or having an argument, it was all the same to him. Something about her—her presence—frustrated him. Ian couldn't even pinpoint when or why it started, but now it didn't matter. He was being forced to marry someone he despised, and he was willing to ruin her life just to escape it.

"Come on, there has to be something you want out of this? Now lets go back inside" he said, sticking out his elbow inviting her to grab his arm. He hated it but it was apart of the act.

Everyone had a weakness. For as long as Ian had known Eliza, he'd tried to find hers—something he could use to destroy her life and finally get her to leave him alone. It was cruel, but he couldn't stop.

"If I go along with it, we will be married and stick together forever, and expected to bear heirs, mind you," she told him, not seeing how he could ever get both. A castle was only so big and if they ruled together there'd always be something they have to attend together. She could fake a lot of things, but being with Ian was something she'd never successfully fake.
-
He got under her skin like nothing she'd ever felt before. He was cold and rude and generally always in her way. Though, he was the only person she could be herself with. He had absolutely seen the good, bad, and ugly. Well, not so much ugly, but still. Despite the transparency of their rocky relationship, Eliza didn't want anything to do with Ian. She had plenty of potential suitors who she could deal with a lot easier than Ian, and she even had one that she actually liked toying with. At that point, she would do anything to avoid marrying Ian and had even given thought to running off to really prove her point. But where would she go? She didn't know how to thrive on her own.
-
Eliza scoffed but took his arm anyways, her hand resting in the crook of his elbow lightly. "I have everything I want except for my freedom, now." She said pointedly, shaking her head before fixing her crown with her free hand. She started to walk, her skin crawling to be so close to Ian. Sure, he was something nice to look at and had perfect standing in the royalty world, but something about him always left her unsettled. Unfulfilled.
-
"Have they told you when the wedding is to take place? I've been told it will be soon, but I'd like to at least know how many days I have before I'm sent into eternal damnation," she huffed, her voice quiet and her tone still on edge. Her hand was even lightly squeezing his arm, which was surprisingly muscular, and she struggled to keep her cool for once as they neared other people again.

Ian hadn’t considered the need for heirs, but he’d deal with that later. If it made his father happy, he didn’t care. All of Ian’s life had been spent trying to prove to his father that he was good enough for the throne. Ian had power, but he struggled to be charming and caring toward the public—it was harder than it seemed.

“I haven’t been told anything about the wedding yet. I’m counting down the days—coronation’s the day after, so at least I have something to look forward to,” he said, his tone teasing. It was the first time he had teased Eliza. He didn’t want to, but he knew he needed to start feeling more comfortable around her.

He paused at the bottom of the steps and turned to face Eliza, taking her hand and noting how soft it felt in his own. “The act starts now,” he said quietly, careful to keep his voice low enough to avoid his mother's sharp ears.

As they reached the first step, his mother opened the door. Ian shot her a stern look, but she ignored it. “Glad to see you two are warming up to each other,” she remarked, and Ian sighed, walking the rest of the way into the house. The interior was packed with people—royalty, servants, and other powerful figures.

A servant called out, “The princess, Eliza Decula, and Prince Ian Tran.” The applause was instant, and Ian couldn’t help but smile. He reached for Eliza’s hand on his arm, holding it for a brief second before the attention shifted to the food being served.

“And I’m gone,” he muttered, dashing off toward the food. He filled his plate with roast venison and grabbed another plate for his betrothed, carefully selecting dishes he thought she would like. He located her in the crowd and presented the plate to her, feeling a little sheepish. “I tried,” he said, his plate a mess from the rush he was in. Ian hated large crowds and usually avoided them whenever possible.

Eliza couldn't care less about having power. If it were up to her, she'd remain at the title of Princess for all of her days, unmarried and perfectly happy. She was more of a people's person, preferring to ensure the lives of commoners and noble folk alike were comfortable in the least. She enjoyed spending time with the kingdoms children and bringing baskets of goodies on random occasions. Truthfully, she just wanted to spread joy.
-
"You are too funny, Ian," Eliza said dramatically, rolling her eyes as a soft smile passed across her face. She knew she'd have to grow accustomed to being with Ian. Even though she had all of these thoughts about running away and ruining the wedding, she knew she'd never be able to do it. Her face was too well known and it would break many hearts without a doubt to hear that a royal wedding was ruined.
-
"Of course. Smiles and all things nice," she said softly, flashing him a proper smile before they entered the room. She hoped she'd be able to keep up the facade with him at her side, and it would seem facing his mother would be the first test. "Indeed we are," she smiled, her hand squeezing his arm as they continued walking towards their introduction to the crowd. As the applause began she smiled brighter, greeting a few people as they integrated into the room. She could see plenty of happy and jealous faces, though most weren't given more than a seconds glance.
-
When he took off for food, Eliza began making her way towards their seats at the dining table, only stopping here or there when she was pulled into conversation. She was nearly to their seats when Ian returned with both of them plates of food. She gave an actual smile and a soft giggle when he presented her plate, which she took after giving him a small bow. "It's the effort that counts, my Prince. Thank you," she replied, her mask so good even she wasn't sure whether or not she was faking it. It was a sweet gesture though, so she was sure her words had been genuine. "We can sit just over here. No one should bother us too bad," she informed him, gesturing for him to follow before she began walking towards the mostly empty table so that they could sit.

Ian followed slowly, making sure no one else was trailing them. As soon as they sat down, a crowd of humans engulfed them. “You were saying?” Ian said, giving Eliza an exaggerated look. He was pressed closely to her by his mother. “Sorry,” he whispered in Eliza’s ear.

A cousin approached, congratulating Ian. “What a cute couple you two make,” he said, smirking at Ian. Ian grabbed Eliza’s arm a bit harder than he intended and locked eyes with his cousin. “Don’t go near her.” The urgency in Ian’s voice must have meant something to his cousin, as he wasn’t seen for the rest of the night.

Ian released Eliza’s hand, revealing a red mark. “Oh, crap, I’m sorry. Just... don’t go near him,” he added, pointing to where his cousin was now mingling with a few young women. Ian wished he could be mingling with people his own age, not stuck in a circle of middle-aged guests who were more interested in making sure he was ready for his coronation.

“Eliza’s mother and I have been planning the wedding. It’s going to be a magnificent event, both for this country and for history,” his mother said, snapping Ian’s thoughts back to the present. He eyed her, who was obviously enjoying getting on his nerves.

“We’ll be taking Eliza to pick out the wedding dress tomorrow,” his mother continued. Ian almost choked on his food but managed to keep it down. “Tomorrow? Why so soon?” Ian gasped searching for air.

His mother smirked. “You must be ready for your wedding in a month’s time. I wanted the ceremony in a week, but your father convinced me to leave a little more time for decorating.” She laughed at the expression on the ‘couple’s’ face.

A million thoughts rushed through Ian’s mind. In less than a month his world would be shattered. A month... not long enough, but somehow more time than he expected.

“If you’ll excuse us, I must take Princess Eliza for a dance,” he said, standing up and bowing slightly. He gently took her hand and led her to a dark room.

“First, I have no idea where your ballroom is. And second… one month. One month!” He let go of her hand rather roughly and ran his fingers through his hair, deep in thought.

Eliza groaned internally when they were surrounded, her smile growing weak as she practically begged for a moment of peace in her mind. "Wonderful," she sighed softly, tensing up when she felt him pressing into her. It took moments but she relaxed, and a chill ran down her spine when his breathe hit her ear. "It's okay.." she murmured, swallowing deeply as she felt her heart beating a little bit faster.
-
When the cousin had approached, Eliza gave him a a friendly smile and had been about to thank him when Ian grabbed her arm, making her jump and grab his leg out of surprise as she bit back an "ouch!" What was his problem? The cousin had seemed really nice, but Ian seemed intent on not having her talk to him, and the cousin had gotten the hint so she didn't get the chance to inquire.
-
When he let go, she pulled away and rubbed the red mark, still giving him a funny look. "It's okay, and I won't, I guess... Getting protective already," she mumbled, her eyes trailing to where the other man had went off to. He seemed like a ladies man, which was likely why Ian didn't want her near him. She had to admit, if she wasn't stuck by Ian, she likely would have been somewhere in that circle of young girls vying for the other man's attention.
-
Her attention was drawn back in when she heard that she'd be wedding dress shopping tomorrow. Her head snapped around and she glared in her mother's direction, who was giving her a stern "behave" look behind the fake, sweet smile. She was even more speechless when the revealed the wedding would take place in a month. A month. Four weeks and she'd be married to the one person she couldn't stand. She was shocked, her mother held slightly open for a moment like a fish out of water before she finally shut it.
-
She gladly let Ian drag her away, her hand gripping his surprisingly tight for how small her hands were. She was a little off put by the dark room, but she was thankful for the privacy it provided. She flinched when he let go of her hand so roughly, but she didn't blame him. She started pacing the empty room, shaking her head in disbelief. "I swear the universe is punishing us. How could they possibly think a month is long enough?!" Eliza growled in frustration and rubbed her face as she looked over at Ian. "What're we going to do? Do you think we can make them delay?"

"At least we get a month," Ian muttered, glancing over at Eliza. "You heard what my mother said—she wanted it all done within a week." He peered around the door, checking to make sure no one was coming. "Okay, now show me where this ballroom is."

He stepped out of the room slowly, following Eliza into a vast space filled with people. The moment they entered, the music stopped, and Ian could feel a hundred pairs of eyes instantly trained on them. Seizing the opportunity, he grabbed Eliza's hand and spun her around. The music picked up again, and Ian could finally breathe as the room fell back into its previous rhythm.

He hesitated but eventually placed his hands on Eliza's waist, dancing awkwardly. His eyes darted back and forth across the ballroom, never lingering on her. He was too busy watching his cousin across the room, who was struggling (and failing) at flirting with someone nearby.

"So, how’s your evening so far, Princess Eliza?" Ian finally asked, dragging his focus back to her. Her eyes shone in the dim light, and for a moment, he got lost in them. Ian, what are you doing? he chastised himself internally. Get it together. You’re not in this for her. You’re in this for the crown. He had to remind himself of his purpose.

The crown belonged to his cousin. But when his cousin's father had died too soon, the crown had passed to Ian’s father—a decision that sparked years of simmering animosity. Now, both Ian and his cousin had come of age, and it was a battle for the throne. If Ian could marry and secure his coronation, the crown would rightfully be his. Even if it meant marrying the one person he most wanted to avoid.

Eliza groaned softly but she knew he was right. They wouldn't be getting a minute of more time for the wedding. In fact, they'd be lucky if it remained as far out as a month. "This way," she muttered before leading him towards the ballroom, her expression all gleeful smiles once more. After all, she should be happy to be getting married, right?
-
When they entered the ballroom and had all eyes on them, Eliza nearly froze. She didn't think everything would stop, but it would seem Ian saw a perfect opportunity. He definitely caught her by surprise, but she followed through with the spin as gracefully as she could. She let out a shaky breath when it was over, her eyes on Ian with veiled surprise. It was a good move, though definitely one she wouldn't have expected from him of all people.
-
Her arms slithered around his neck, one hand absently playing in the soft strands of his hair. She didn't make eye contact, but she did keep close with a relaxed demeanor as they danced. "Relax.. I'm not gonna bite you," she murmured, though her cheeks had a tinge of pink as they moved to the beat of the music. Her skin tingled where his hands were placed and she couldn't think of much aside from how close they were.
-
At his question she faltered a moment, her gaze snapping up to meet his. "I'd have to admit it's been the most intriguing of times. Is it living up to your standards, Prince Ian?" She asked, her head tilting to one side as she took in his features... handsome features.. Why didn't I flirt with him before? Wait- Nope, not going there, Eliza... She shook it off, reminding herself that he was still her enemy. They didn't get along. They didn't want to get married.
-
She let the silence fall for a few moments after she had his answer, her nimble fingers still toying with his hair, curling it around her finger before running them through it again. "Your cousin.. Why were you so insistent that I don't talk to him?" She asked, her green eyed gaze flicking to the cousin who was still across the room.

Ian glanced around the room, his gaze flickering between the faces of the guests. "Well, it’s going better than I expected," he muttered, more to himself than to Eliza. "But we’ve got to keep this show going." The words felt like a reminder, not just to her, but to himself too. The last thing he wanted was to fall for his enemy, like the characters in the stories his mother used to tell him. Pathetic stories, he thought bitterly. He had always prided himself on being a great actor. And now, he was going to have to prove it—especially if it meant staying in this farce with someone he didn’t want to be stuck with.

The room's chatter slowly quieted as the families arrived. Ian’s eyes skimmed over his mother, but he quickly turned his attention back to Eliza. Her hair shimmered in the thin beam of light that streamed through a small window in the roof. He found himself captivated by it, the way the strands seemed to glow. I could touch it. Just as part of the act, he told himself. But no. That was crossing a line. He was getting ahead of himself.

He swallowed hard, forcing the words out. "Well... he’s just a nuisance," Ian said, his voice tight. He didn’t want to tell Eliza the truth—that he wasn’t cut out for the crown. It wasn’t just about stealing something that didn’t belong to him; it was about the weight of it, the guilt that gnawed at him every time he thought of it. He had been raised for this role, but something about it never felt right.
