Sage froze when he thought he heard footsteps again and cursed under his breath when he noticed the girl out of the corner of his eye. He would have tried to creep up on her and kill her, but she had a dog, so that would prove to be quite difficult to do. He fingered the hilt of his dagger, eyeing her gun wearily. At this distance, his knife wouldn't do too much against a gun. He'd have to get closer. He set the food down as quietly as possible, starting to creep towards her quietly. When she reached into the crate though, he stopped trying to be quiet and chucked the dagger, the blade burying into the wood by her head. He lunged towards her while she was distracted, tackling her and moving to swoftly grab Lizzie, setting her against the wall behind him and retrieving his dagger before facing the girl again, fully ready for a fight. But she was not touching his baby....and his face fully told her that.

Lucifer started barking just a moment before a dagger got slammed into the wood by her head, she took a quick step back and gave a curt, sharp command in Dutch in the brief moment before she got tackled. Lucifer was growling roughly at the man, but her command kept him in place. Tempe was on her feet again in a moment, her gun on the floor a a few meters away. They were close enough, that if she tried to grab it, he would stab her before she got there. So instead she took a step back, flicking a dagger out of her pocket and holding it lightly in front of her. She raised her eyebrows at the man and her gaze flicked to the child behind him. "Yours?" She asked hoarsely, her grey eyes narrowing as she looked at him again.

Sage set his jaw in response to the girls question, holding his dagger in a way he could go offensive or defensive, however the fight went. "I think you can figure that one out for yourself," he responded coldly, shifting in a manner that he'd be able to kick the dog away from Lizzie at a moments notice. He was rather at a loss here, and he knew it....she had the dog, and more room, and her and the dog seemed better fed than he was since he made sure Lizzie was never hungry. But it was also clear he wasn't going to stop fighting until one of them was dead.

Tempe narrowed her eyes. "Ah, so you are an asshole. Good to know." She responded sarcastically, tensing as he shifted. She tossed out another command in Dutch, using her free hand to point at her gun on the floor. She shifted protectively as Dutch crept forward and, to the best of his ability, dragged the gun back across the floor. She side stepped and picked up her gun, tucking her knife away. "Stay there." She said quietly, glancing around and creeping backward to find his bag, filled with food. There wasn't almost anything left on the shelf, and he had what seemed like at least a few cans there. She quietly took a few, crouching with her gaze mainly settled on him as she tucked them into her own bag. She left a couple- she wasn't heartless.

Sage sort of just rolled his eyes in response to her comment. He sort of had to be an asshole...if you're weren't a bit of one, you wouldn't survive very long on the streets. He felt anger bubbling up inside his chest when she moved to take some of the food, but she had a gun so if he made a move to attack, he'd be shot and gone before he got two steps in. And he wasn't going to leave Lizzie with the dog still so close. But the food was also their lifeline....though he did wonder why she left some in the bag. He pushed the thoughts away when he heard something fall in the deeper parts of the store, and he moved his gaze to the source of the noise, and let out a series of muttered curses when his nose picked up the smell of rotten flesh. So there were zombies here now....no doubt they were tracking them, since they hadn't made any noises until then.

Tempe froze as the shuffling noise reached her ears, her eyes widening slightly. She slowly rose to her full height, exchanging a glance with the strange man in front of her. She redoubled her grip on her gun, raising it in front of her and walking backward down the aisle. Lucifer was pacing up and down the aisle, only differing in his pattern when his handler flicked her head to the side. Rather than wait for the zombies to come to her, she crept down the back of the store quietly, her eyes scanning the dim aisles quickly. One of them came quickly from a branching aisle, and to say she dispatched it quickly was an understatement. It was gone with a shot to the skull within seconds. Her breath picked up in pace as a few swarmed from behind it, and she skittered backward toward the aisle she had been in originally, reloading her gun and setting off another round.

Sage glanced back at the girl as she started to move again, then scowled when the zombies swarmed towards them. It would have been better to kill them quietly, one by one....they weren't very smart, so the only thing attracting them now was the gun. That was why he had a dagger....he preferred silent and deadly to loud. Once the zombies neared him, he moved to slash and decapitate each zombie one by one, until there weren't any left. Then he moved to scoop the now crying Lizzie up and fuss about her until she quieted, forgetting about the other human nearby.

Eventually, Tempe found that her gun jammed- 3 bullets in. She scoffed and tucked it in the waistband on her jeans, going at the rest with her knife. She got caught up in the arms of one, but she wriggled her way out of its grasp quickly and slammed her dagger into its neck. She panted quietly after, glancing around and taking a second glance at the father down the aisle from her. She watched him quietly for a few moments, her gaze flicking to the baby in his arms. It was so strange to see a child after so long. She rarely saw other people, but a young one? A baby? That was nearly impossible. She was faintly curious about it- specifically the mother. Where was she if he was out and about with the kid? She shook the thoughts off and cleaned her knife with the fabric of her shirt, glancing up at the sound of growling. Lucifer was latched onto yet another zombie; one that was struggling down the aisle toward the pair. Almost instinctively, she raised her knife and threw it- her aim was good enough that it passed the back of the strange man's and sunk into the corpse's chest, stopping it in its tracks.

Sage's head snapped around when he heard the knife fly through the air, remembering there was still a threat around. Of course, the girl had only made a move to attack the zombies, but he was still weary of her. And her dog. The zombie the knife hit fell, and he shifted so Liz couldn't see the whole thing, before reaching over to take the knife out of the flesh and toss it back to the other girl with a sort of tired sigh. He doubted she'd attack now...she'd have killed him already if she'd wanted to do that. Edited at February 25, 2024 07:56 PM by NightClan

Tempe watched him warily as he stopped and retrieved her knife, catching it when he tossed it. Lucifer was mirroring her in the way that he stared up at the man, specifically the baby, intrigued by the little one. "...Thanks." She nodded quietly, again lifting the hem of her shirt to clean off her blade before she tucked it in her pocket. "I'm curious. What happened to the mother?" She asked quietly, walking toward him slowly, cautiously. She kept to the leftmost side of the aisle, tilting her narrow shoulders to pass by him and get to Lucifer, observing the defeated corpse below her.
