its only done for medical reasons and you'd have to find a vet who has the equipment and know how...as with any specialized procedure

it's not common, more common in mules if anything

I really wouldn't recommend spaying a mare unless there's a medical reason for it.

It’s rare but it does still happen a lot. I’d assume just like horses, if there is a medical reason or a good reason they’d do it to benefit the animal just like guinea pigs etc

Is spaying mares common in the US…? I don’t think I’ve ever (knowingly) come across a spayed mare in the UK. Just curious really! Only met stallions with lovely manners personally. I expect they would not have remained intact if the reverse were true!

more so rabbits than anything but rabbits are scary under anesthesia

03:31:45 Jazz
its rare for a vet to want to spay a guineapig, hedgehog, rabbit etc
Minerva
03:31:24 Min
I sometimes wonder if Minnie would have benefitted from being spayed as she goes a bit overboard with being in season

Spaying Guinea pigs is a huge no no UNLESS it’s a medical emergency but there are still vets who will do it especially if you’re gonna put the females in with males as they are social animals… They aren’t spayed a lot due to the health issues that can happen with it and can be dangerous for them
The Old Gods

Spaying mares is a bit more complicated than spaying a dog or a cat.

yes, cancers and pyometras in dogs/cats alone is enough reason to spay them haha

Some mares have painful heats, sometimes stallions get loose, sometimes genetics just shouldn't be passed on. So many reasons to spay a mare. Just seems like a bonkers argument

so not, you shouldn't just "spay your mare" without a reason... and a vet shouldn't just "spay a mare" without a reason

Cool! Your lucky to live on your ranch, I have to drive a bit to get to my stable. I used to ride western when I was younger but I do jumping now.

They are obviously going to have different riding back stories but what should their family backstory be? I was thinking around 16 for their age if that's good with you.
