"But what if I can't afford to pay you back?" She asked softly. "Like if we go on vacation?"

"You don't pay me back, ever, you never have to." I explained, finishing my meal as I set the plate aside, turning on my side now as I faced her. "Please, don't ever worry about paying me back." My phone started ringing, the name flashing on the screen making me pause. -Zach?- My eyes widened as my brows raised in surprise, a grin showing up on my face as I answered it. "Out of basic i'm guessing, right Boot?" Zach laughed, the sound somewhat unfamiliar yet amazing to hear as I ran a hand through my hair, still in shock. "Sure am, never thought i'd even make it out. Hell Week was, well, a week of hell---shocker, I know." I chuckled, glancing back at Emily and realizing i'd practically abandoned her. I only stayed on the call for a couple more minutes, saying my goodbye as I hung up, still giddy as I flopped back down, turning back to Em. "Well, just got a call from somebody who I thought had forgotten me, was shocked he didn't. Sorry about that, now what were we talking about?" Edited at March 16, 2026 03:11 PM by RFS Thoroughbreds

"Nothing important" She muttered, plastering on a fake smile even though she felt a little hurt about being temporarily forgotten. It was something her ex had done notoriously, especially around his freinds, and it hit a nerve in her. She just got up and took the dishes downstairs

"Babe I---. . . shit." I muttered, running a hand through my hair as I sat on the edge of our bed, regretting even picking up the phone now. I hadn't heard from Zach in over three months, that's longer than me and Emily have even been dating dating. Not just the random hookups while she worked, but we now actually have something going on. -Guess the main question is, do I risk losing her, or do I risk the one who got me through most of the shit I was in? -

She came back upstairs after taking care of the dishes rather agressively. SHe climbed under the covers and snuggled up against Caden's side, placing a kiss on his lips.

"I'm sorry, about earlier. I shouldn't of just left you without explaining." I murmured, my arm draping over her waist and pulling her against me per usual, pecking her temple lightly.

"It's fine" She lied. "I understand"

-It's not, though.- I wanted to say, though I stayed silent as I pecked her cheek, remaining still as I pulled the covers over us more.

Once I was sure she was asleep I removed my arm, feeling somewhat disgusted by my own actions as I turned away from her, gazing out the window as I started to get lost in thought. How had I ended up with the girl of my dreams, yet even though I could barely believe she was real--which she was, she defanitely was....why did it just feel so...wrong? There's nothing wrong with our relationship. The words started echoing in my mind. There's 'nothing' wrong with our relationship. There's nothing 'wrong' with our relationship. There's nothing wrong with 'our' relationship. There's nothing wrong with our 'relationship'. There's nothing wrong with Emily. There's something wrong with me, though. And that's the only conclusion I dare to accept.
