Ben had to work hard to keep Ghost going, tired as she was, but soon he gave in and let her slow to a quick trot. Suddenly they broke out of the treeline and onto an animal path leading up the mountain. Ben didn't really think, just manuevered Ghost around the bends of the trail, hoping he'd reach the top soon.

Brock was struggling and saw Ben almost at the top. "No!" He bellowed, kicking and whipping his stubborn horse. The stallion didn't move, just sidepassed

Ben was unaware of Brock and Symphony behind him, but Ghost twitched an ear. He knew they must be close behind, and he urged Ghost on, tired as she was. Soon she was walking, and he didn't blame her. The incline was steep, and he was growing weary from leaning forward all the time. Finally, he saw the line of trees ahead disappear, and the ground flattened out to reveal a small sort of plateau at the top, with long prairie grass and wildflowers dotting the land. Ben smiled at the sight of it and asked Ghost to stop. She willingly stood still as he looked around, trying to catch his breath.

Brock finally reached the top a couple minutes after Ben. "NO!" He bellowed again, taking off down the mountain in anger

Ben watched Brock silently, cringing for Symphony. He realized maybe he should have let Brock win and just leave. This place was crazy and not at all what he'd expected, so maybe it was best to find another place. But he had won, and the rules said he was the one who'd get to stay. Ben sighed, dismounted, and hand walked Ghost back down the hill.

Ben made it down in a couple minutes, both he and Ghost refreshed from the walk. He saw Emma still waiting for him and gave her a small smile. He led Ghost to the aisleway and began untacking the mare, keeping an eye out for Brock.

Brock barreled down the hill, not letting Symphony slow as he charged into the barn. "You must have cheated! There's no way!"

Ben didn't know how to respond to Brock. He felt like every explanation would get him yelled at or punched. He made up his mind to stay silent, but his mouth thought otherwise. "Brock, I've never cheated in my life. Why would I start now?" At least it was a reasonable response, and he'd said it calmly, with not trace of the fear that Brock might pound him.

Emma nodded. "Brock, it was your idea for the competition. The only person I can see cheating is you" she said
