Void - there are definitely still places in medicine where the root cause is addressed. I was referring to for example, someone having a mental health issue (not one where they have a predisposed genetic factor of course, that requires medication) and rather than trying to figure out what’s causing them to have imbalances and addressing the underlying issue, band-aiding with something that masks over the issue itself and makes it feel as if it was gone, but later realizing the core problem still presides.

let me ask--are you thinking of going to college, and think you need to pick a specific specialty or study to be good at it? because it's completely valid and even a very good thing for many people not to immediately go into school, and to just learn to navigate the "real" world and see if you find something that speaks to you. yes it can make it more difficult to go to school in some cases, but it can also offer a lot more maturity and experience to bring to a schooling scenario when you know you really want to do something

zrek - that's certainly a risk, of course, but all the therapists I've worked with I've been very lucky to have ones who deeply, genuinely care for the wellbeing of their patients, and make the system better as much they can from the inside. without good people in the systems, the systems will only ever be "bad"

...Although, in some cases, fixing the symptoms is literally just a matter of yeeting medicine at someone's head lmao because no therapy in the world is going to correct neurotransmitter issues

O_o no? That definitely doesn't align with medical practice since to 'fix the symptoms' it requires going to the root cause. It's why cognitive behavior therapy is one of the most popular types

Eve - I’ve thought about therapy but then considered the way clinics operate. I feel like I wouldn’t be able to help people because I’d be operating under the systems of the masses - once again instructed to only fix the symptoms and only use specific knowledge. Maybe if it was my own clinic. I just feel like it has a lot of the same corruption as medicine.

zrek - (lol yeah not surprised); even if it's not fixing society, it means the world to the person whose world you touch. and those butterfly effect ripples make all the difference in the end, even if we can't see the impacts and results

Social work can be many different things. You could work for a shelter, such a case manager/social worker. Counseling, Resident Support. Or you could get more into the medical field. My sister is a psychologist at a hospital. She did social work before that. She has a masters in psychology.

Gladius - (autocorrect wants to call you Gladys) thank you, it’s difficult not to treat it as if I am committing to my life’s work - the intensity of it all seems to make it that way. Sometimes I feel like even when I’m trying to do good in the spheres I know I’m only fixing the symptoms of a broken society rather than fixing it at the source. It’s rather draining and makes things feel hopeless. I hope things can change for the better faster than I assume.

honestly the most important thing: do good in the spheres you're part of now, where you have power and control to. we aren't all going to make massive change, but together we can get there with multitudes of little changes

Matt looked up at the sound of Trixies voice, turning around to the direction of the noise. His eyes lingered over her for a long couple of seconds, his mouth opening and closing like a fish. "You look beautiful" he said quietly, stuffing his phone in the side pocket of his blazer. He had taken it off whilst waiting for her, half because it was rather warm, half because he absolutely hated wearing it. "And thanks" he added after, though he wanted to brush that off rather quickly. He moved forward and placed his hands on her waist, his touch gentle. "Are you ready to go?" he asked, though he said it rather reluctantly. He already didn't want to go, he now felt plain overprotective.

Trixie smiled, tilting her head at him. "I don't look that great." She said sarcastically, flushing slightly at his reaction and giving a slightly nervous smile. "Thanks, I guess." She chuckled, wrapping her arms around him as he came closer. "No. I feel like I'm gonna end up flashing everybody with this fucking slit." She muttered, leaning forward and pressing her forehead gently to his. "I mean, if this weren't mandatory, we could stay home and... watch a movie, instead." She teased, closing her eyes.

Matt narrowed his eyes at her words, his gaze setting ivwr the slit mentioned in her dress. "Well I won't let that happen. If i handcuff you and lead you around all night that can't happen now can it?" he joked, raking a hand through his hair as he spoke. He raised his eyebrows at her words, biting his lip. "Don't tempt me." he said quietly, glancing at the clock above their heads. "As much as i'd like to stay here and "watch a movie" we should go. We won't hear the end of it all night from Diana if we're too late" he said, yet again reluctantly. He removed his hands from her waist and grabbed his blazer, gesturing for her to follow. Once they were both in the car and on the way, he turned to look at Trixie, pulling up to the lights. "you reckon you'll end up winning anything tonight?" he asked with a smile, fiddling with the steering wheel as he spoke.

"I guess not but I doesn't sound very convenient for either of us. What if Ava wants to whisk you away?" Trixie said sarcastically, giving him a mock-innocent smile. "I'm not tempting anything. I just suggested that we watch a movie." She said innocently, huffing at him. "Fine. Just so you know, I severely dislike Diana at the moment. If we see her, remind me to be mad." She huffed, following him lightly. She shook her head at the question. "There's no way. Especially when half my shoots involve Ava- I've got nothing on her. You might win something, though. Do you think you will?"

"Not. A. Chance." Matt said, his words coming out through a long exhale as he stretched a little. He rubbed his arm, looking up at the lights turn green. "What's she done to you? Made you..work?"He asked jokingly, keeping one hand on the steering wheel and moving his hair out his eyes with the other. He kept the same smile displayed on his face as he turned down the long gravel road shown on the screen, near the venue. "I wouldn't think like that, really. And probably not, don't forget i was also paired with Ava. It's hard to stand next to her and look professional when she's huffing and puffing all the time" he sighed, staring ahead at the large enough crowd by the gates. "Can I run them over?" he asked, frowning.

"Mhm." Trixie hummed lightly, rolling her eyes at him. "She gave me this damned dress." She huffed, staring out the windshield as they met a gravel road. "Well, that just makes me feel so much better." She said playfully, tilting her head to look at him. "You can, but they might dent the car." She teased, reaching over and gently brushing his hair back with her fingers.

"And you look good in it, as much as you might not agree" Matt smiled, taking a quick glance at Trixie as he slowed behind another car turning into the gates. "Good point" he added, almost musing the thought. Eventually he had made his way through the crowd and the gates, parking up a little away from the other cars. Once he turned it off, he turned round to look at Trixie. "You ready?" he asked, still feeling the same bount of overprotectiveness.

"You're my boyfriend, you have to say that. But thank you." Trixie said sarcastically, but she smiled at the compliment never the less. "Well, I make those every so often." She teased, offering him a light smile. "About as ready as I'll ever be." She huffed, gently tugging at the slit in her dress before she got out.

Matt nodded in acknowledgement, threw a quick smile and eventually made his way out the car, shutting and locking it after Trixie had done the same thing. It was fairly late, and the air was crisp and a little cold. He pulled his blazer on and made his way to the entrance of the venue, glancing quickly at the people by the gates. Once they entered the venue he raised his eyebrows, staring up at the incredibly high ceiling, low hanging lights and a marble-effect floor that could only be described as a death bed for anyone wearing shoes with no grip. Matt looked over at Trixie, fiddling with the cuff of his shirt underneath his blazer. "I'll only assume you wanna get a drink first?" he asked, watching various other important looking people rush about.

The air was cold enough to raise slight goosebumps on her arms as they moved, and Trixie reached out to grab Matt's hand, walking quickly for someone in four inch heels. She hurried on and slowed down once they entered the intimidating ballroom-like venue. "Yes, please." She huffed softly, glancing around and then leaning him toward the bar at a leisurely pace.
