THE PLOT
Dragons. They invaded the world, once thought to be a mere myth. Emerging from a cave in the American Midwest, no one knew what had driven them from their lair. Some blamed the government, while others pointed fingers at friends and family. One thing was certain: the world was in turmoil, with everyone at each others throats in a desperate struggle for survival.

This chaos persisted until Dragon Tamers appeared, helping people and teaching them how to coexist with the dragons. Cities began to abandon traditional methods of transportation, increasingly relying on dragons instead. However, the military still preferred their machines. Though the turmoil had largely subsided, a darker presence now looms on the horizon.

Dragons are becoming uncontrollable, harming their riders and those around them. Amidst this turmoil, two lovers must unite to confront this mysterious "foe." But will one of them uncover a hidden truth about the other that leads to destruction? Could the enemy be lurking right under their noses?

His parents were overall emotionally abusive, making him believe he barely had control over his life, causing him to cling to the few things he could, including when he wanted to eat and how much. His parents had commented on his weight several times, causing an eating disorder to occur around 13. Being homeschooled his whole life has caused him to struggle with certain aspects of socialization. He went no contact with them around 18, right before he was lured into a secret Terrorist Organization, where he was saved from the said organization by a Southern American man who was the founder and commander of a PMC(Private Military Company). Rowan still has a deep-rooted loyalty to that man.

arlaina portrays herself as a calm and composed individual, having learned to control her expressions from a young age in an effort to seem capable and qualified for leadership. after the untimely death of her parents, appearing strong has become even more important to her. the idea that she is not enough and was not even capable enough to save her parents haunts her, urging her to push herself harder. this fear manifests itself as a a fierce protectiveness over both her loved ones. although she is empathetic and gentle in nature, she will not hesitate to take action against a perceived threat and bear pain so her people won't have to. persistent and focused in her efforts, arla rarely gives up on a goal; this can come off as stubbornness in some situations. on the opposite of the spectrum is her occasional tendency to be reckless and adventurous. although she seems to be a calm and mellow individual, she possesses a love for the skies made accessible by dragons. she chooses not to cut her distinct hair. she often braids her hair to keep it away from her face. this stems from a desire to observe and note every important detail lest she misses something vital. she prefers knowing exactly what she's walking into if it affects anyone other than her person. this selflessness guides her every thought and action, although it can be occasionally unknowingly misplaced. arla's family and loved ones are her world and she would willingly sacrifice herself for them if deemed necessary.

TRIGGER WARNING!
Rowan let out a low, weary groan as he sank deeper into the thin, tattered covers of the meager cot he had come to reluctantly call his bed. The morning sun filtered through the small, grimy window, casting warm rays that danced languidly across the rough, splintered floorboards of his cramped barrack. Despite the sunlight, a chill lingered in the air, and he could feel it creeping beneath the covers, urging him to rise.
With a gradual effort, he rolled his legs out from the cozy cocoon of blankets, his bare feet meeting the biting cold of the wooden floor below. The sensation sent a shiver through him, and he paused for a moment, savoring the contrast of warmth and cold. Slowly, he rose to his feet, stretching his arms high above his head with a deep, rumbling yawn that echoed softly in the stillness of the room, momentarily breaking the silence of the dull expanse.
Shuffling over to the narrow drawer mounted on the wall to his right, he fumbled through the meager belongings within. His fingers brushed against the coarse fabric of worn clothes, each piece bearing the signs of countless days and nights. After a brief search, he pulled out a fresh set of clothing—a faded shirt and a pair of trousers, their colors muted by time and frequent use.
Turning sharply on his heels, he made his way to the opposite wall where a door stood slightly ajar, inviting yet imposing. He pushed it open, stepping into the small bathroom that felt like an entirely different world. The stark fluorescent light flickered to life with a jarring snap, illuminating the space with an unforgiving brightness that highlighted every chipped tile and peeling wall.
Setting the bundle of clothing on the chipped porcelain sink, he took a moment to catch his breath, letting the sterile environment wash over him like a wave. With a quick motion, he closed the door behind him and slid the lock into place, a small barrier against the outside world. Ready to face the challenges awaiting him, he steeled himself for the day ahead, aware that each moment could lead him deeper into the unknown. He calmly undressed and turned the water on, waiting until it was hot but not scolding. He climbed in and started his usual routine. Soon finished he clothed himself and walked out of his barrack, entering the hallway, his combat boots echoing in the very eery halls. The hair on his neck raised in warning before he spun around. A dragon, Its mouth agape with human flesh stuck in its teeth, fresh crimson dripping down its maw, its scales a mix of emerald green, other greens, and teals, its large wings that were tucked at its sides brushed against the walls as it stalked toward him. Its pupils were dilated so that its irises were black pools. He froze, his hands reflexively coming up in an attempt to shield himself if the dragon was dangerous.

Arlaina woke as the first light of dawn crept through the gaps in the canvas of her tent, soft amber hues spilling over the woven rug beneath her. The air was cool, kissed by the lingering breath of the night, but already, the sun was promising heat for the day ahead. She stretched out slowly, her muscles aching from yesterday’s long hours of work, though there was a quiet satisfaction in the soreness. This life she had chosen—no, had been called to—was one of constant motion, of endless challenges, but also profound moments of connection.

Beside her, curled up in a massive pile of blankets and leather, was her closest companion: Kaelath, her dragon. His scales shimmered in the dim light, a deep, stormy blue that could be mistaken for a sky just before a thunderstorm. He slept soundly, chest rising and falling in deep, slow breaths. A rare sight; Kaelath, the fiercest of his kind, was not one to rest for long. But this morning, perhaps sensing the peaceful aura that surrounded her, he remained still.

Arlaina ran a hand through her tangled auburn hair, brushing it back from her face as she rose from her bedroll, careful not to disturb him. She stepped outside her tent, barefoot on the damp earth, the cool dew kissing her skin. Her boots were nearby, worn and scuffed from years of travel and danger, but for now, the earth felt good beneath her. The camp around her was still quiet, the other tamers and travelers slowly waking, preparing for the day.

The camp itself was nestled in a valley, surrounded by thick trees and cliffs that rose high above. The sound of distant waterfalls and the occasional caw of a raven punctuated the silence. In the sky, the faint outlines of other dragons could be seen—a few of the older, more independent creatures that roamed free, as their riders did the same.

Her thoughts lingered on Kaelath as she crouched by a small fire pit, stoking the embers with a bit of kindling she’d gathered earlier. He would wake soon, and when he did, she needed to be ready. Tamers didn’t have the luxury of taking the day at their own pace. Not when the bond between dragon and rider was as deep and complex as theirs.

She smiled softly as the fire crackled to life, the warmth licking at her skin, and took a deep breath, savoring the moment of solitude. In the silence, she could hear the distant rumble of Kaelath’s growl, a low vibration that seemed to come from the very earth beneath her feet. It wasn’t an angry sound—more like a reminder that he was waking, stretching his wings, preparing for whatever the day would bring.

Arlaina rose, her hands steady despite the excitement that stirred inside her. She made her way back to the tent, where Kaelath was now stirring. His eyes—bright silver with streaks of lightning that seemed to shift with his moods—met hers, a silent greeting. She moved toward him, her steps deliberate, each motion one of calm assurance.

"Morning, Kaelath," she murmured, her voice a soft, familiar comfort to the creature who had once been little more than a wild, untamed force. Now, with every year they spent together, the bond deepened. She was his rider; she was his family.

Kaelath unfurled his wings, the massive appendages stretching out with a soft rustling of leathery skin. The sound filled the air, a low, musical hum that seemed to vibrate through the very bones of the valley. As he stood, towering over her, Arlaina ran her hand along the edge of his wing, her fingers brushing the cool, smooth scales. The connection was electric, and as always, it brought a sense of peace.

Together, they would face the unknowns of the day ahead—whether it was taming a new dragon, hunting down rogue creatures, or negotiating with the people of the nearby villages. The work was never the same, and neither were the challenges. But with Kaelath by her side, she was ready for whatever came.

The wind picked up, sending a shiver through her, and she smiled as she looked up at him, her companion in both flight and life. "Let’s see what the day holds, old friend," she said, as they both turned toward the rising sun.

And so, the morning began—a new chapter in their shared story, a dragon tamer and her dragon, facing the world together, as they always had.

Rowan breathed heavily, a frown etched on the man's features as he stared the dragon down. It let out a low growl, the sound almost coming out in a noise of greeting. It scared Rowan momentarily, his mind churning over the noise several times, trying to process the noise. Rowan was still tense. For all he knew he could be killed with a singular bite. It made him scared, made him fear for his life even. Rowan backed up a few steps. Only to be closely followed by the 'deranged' creature. A small breath left his lips and the dragon paused. Its nostrils flared once, twice, thrice, before it lunged. It lunged at him until its maw was only a arms length away from him before it skidded to a stop. He muffled a scream with his hands. Forcing himself to swallow around the lump in his throat. The soft lights from the hallway hit the fresh crimson blood on the dragons maw, yet it made its scales look glittery as they gleamed in the lighting. He stared down the creature before he started to move back again, this time the creature stayed in place, 'Good' He thought. his breaths still harsh as he continued to back up
The creature then lurched forwards again, this time not stopping until his fingertips brushed its muzzle. Causing him to freeze at the electric feel that shocked him, literally. He let out a gasp before a yelp escaped his lips, yet as he tried to pull his arm away his body didn't respond to his command. Rather his pupils expanded until even the dim lighting was blinding and it made him want to bang his head into the nearest wall to hopefully clear the headache that brewed. He closed his eyes tight. squeezing them closed before he started to feel like he was floating, and he started to feel akin to how he felt the one time he tried those... Odd mushrooms... He groaned softly as images started to flash in his head at a rate he couldn't understand before it was to late and dizziness set in. Another groan escaped him as he stumbled back, falling over himself and hitting the floor with a audible thud. His head hitting the floor before he could even compute what had just happened.

The wind howled across the cliffside, carrying with it the scent of rain and the distant rumble of thunder. Arlaina tugged her cloak tighter around her shoulders, her eyes scanning the horizon as she and Kaelath descended from the swirling sky. The massive dragon's wings beat steadily, the deep, stormy blue of his scales gleaming like the turbulent sky before a thunderstorm. His eyes, dark and penetrating, searched the landscape below with practiced ease.

"Something’s off," Arlaina muttered to herself, a chill creeping up her spine. Her connection to Kaelath had always been strong, but today the bond felt different—strained, like a wire pulled too taut.

They landed with a resounding thud, the earth shuddering beneath them as Kaelath tucked his wings in and surveyed their surroundings. The rocky landscape stretched out before them, harsh and wild, but it was the figure lying motionless on the ground that caught Arlaina’s attention.

The man was sprawled next to a dragon—though "next to" didn't quite do it justice. The creature's head lay just inches from the man's outstretched hand, its body coiled like a serpent.

But it wasn’t the strange dragon that made Arlaina’s heart quicken. It was the man. He was clearly unconscious, his face pale and smeared with dirt, his eyes closed as though in deep slumber—or perhaps something worse. But it wasn’t the unconsciousness that set her on edge. It was the fear in his posture. His body was rigid, as if caught in a moment of sheer terror, even in sleep. His arms were raised, almost as if warding off an unseen threat. His hands trembled slightly, and his fingers twitched, as though he was still caught in some lingering nightmare.

"Kaelath," Arlaina whispered, her hand tightening on the reins. The dragon made a low, rumbling sound in his chest, a combination of curiosity and wariness.

The bond between them was more than just the rider’s command and the dragon’s obedience—it was a shared feeling, a deep, instinctual connection. And right now, that connection was filled with unease.

The dragon beside the man was still, but its eyes—those piercing, amber eyes—were open. They didn’t blink, they didn’t move, but they were watching. Watching them.

The air was heavy, thick with an oppressive silence that seemed to hang over the scene. Arlaina slid off Kaelath’s back and approached the unconscious man, her boots crunching softly against the gravel. She knelt beside him, her gloved hands hovering just above his face as if to gauge the distance between herself and a danger she could not yet see.

"Wake up," she said, her voice low and coaxing.

Rowan groaned softly. He heard a voice, yet he didn't compute their words. He heard the dragon growl in warning, if the dragon was still here, how was this person he heard in his haze still be alive. Unless he was hallucinating hearing them, he wouldn't be quite surprised if that was the case. He inhaled deeply, his eye lids started to flutter momentarily before he fell still again.
Unbeknown to him the dragon had moved over his immobile form. It's body almost curling around his body like a serpent, it's four legs on either side of his body, its amber irises were covered by its expanding pupils as it bared blood stained teeth at the sudden intruder. It had carried him from the base he called home to the middle of nowhere at who knew where, guarding him as if he was something valuable and holy like some ancient artifact instead of just some human male. It's wings flared as it brushed its cheek against the man's fingertips. drawing another meek groan from him.
It huffed, it's demeanor quickly changing as it lowered itself over the man, it's wings falling from its sides to hit the ground, hiding most of the man's body from view. It's emerald scales blending nicely into the scenery and the warm and soft rays from the sun creating a memorizing glittering effect on its scales. It's horns were twisted into the air like a vine curling around a Trellis. The horns were long, almost as long as its snout as it shook it's head, blinded by the sun from its wide pupils. A low rumble escaping its lips. It had small spikes running down it's neck down to its tail tip, where at the tip it had a fin looking thing that was shaped into a leaf. It's wings were also shaped slightly as round leaves. It had a frill behind its ears, connecting to its horns, it also had a smaller nose on its snout, right near where its snout dipped down around its nostrils and mouth. (IDK if that made sense, Look up a leafwing or a rainwing in google for a example:D)

Arlaina’s boots barely made a sound on the soft earth as she crouched at the edge of the clearing, eyes fixed on the unconscious man. He lay still beneath the shade of the ancient trees, his chest rising and falling with a slow, shallow rhythm. The faint scent of magic lingered in the air—something old, something dangerous. But that wasn’t what had her heart racing.

It was the massive dragon coiled around him.

The creature was nothing like Kaelath. Where her dragon was sleek, elegant, and burning with the fierce light of a storm, this dragon was a shadow—dark scales that shimmered like wet obsidian, wings folded tightly to its sides, and eyes glowing with a cold, watchful intensity. It was curled protectively around the man, its enormous coils woven tightly, like an unbreakable barrier.

The protective growl that rumbled from its chest when Arlaina made her first step toward the man froze her in place.

"Kaelath..." she murmured, reaching for her dragon's presence through their bond.

A low, rumbling response came from behind her, vibrating through the air. Arlaina didn't have to look to know Kaelath stood just a few paces behind, his wings spread wide, tail flicking with barely-contained energy. His amber eyes narrowed as he assessed the other dragon’s movements, the air between them crackling with tension.

"Can you get closer?" Arlaina asked, her voice steady but threaded with urgency. The man needed help. She couldn’t reach him while the dragon—his dragon—was blocking her way.

Kaelath’s wings flicked with irritation, but he shook his head slightly, his voice reverberating deep within her mind. That dragon will not let you near him.

Arlaina's jaw clenched. "I need to wake him up. He’s in trouble, Kaelath. Please, we don’t have much time."

The sound of claws scraping against stone echoed in the stillness as the dark dragon shifted slightly, the protective hiss that followed warning Arlaina away. She could feel the tension—every muscle in its body coiled like a spring, ready to strike if she came too close.

But she couldn’t leave this man to whatever magic was pulling at him. She had to try.

"I have to get to him," Arlaina insisted, standing straighter, but before she could take another step forward, Kaelath let out a low, commanding growl—a sound that rumbled through her chest as much as the air around them.

Stay behind me, Arlaina.

The warning in his tone was unmistakable.

"I can handle this," she said, barely above a whisper, but the words were more to herself than to Kaelath. She couldn’t afford to doubt. She reached for her power, letting the heat of the storm dragon surge through her veins. She wasn’t afraid—she’d faced worse than this.

Before she could move, Kaelath stepped forward, his sleek form positioning itself protectively between her and the other dragon. His wings flared out, casting a shadow over the clearing, and his amber eyes glowed with fierce intent.

"Kaelath," Arlaina said softly, but there was no mistaking the steadiness in her voice. "He won’t hurt me."

The storm dragon’s eyes flicked back to her, then to the other dragon, who now hissed low and menacingly, its teeth bared in a warning. Kaelath’s tail flicked with agitation, but he stood his ground.

Not while I’m here, Kaelath’s voice thrummed in her mind. I will not let him harm you, Arlaina. No one will.

Arlaina exhaled slowly, the tension of the moment tightening her chest. She understood Kaelath’s need to protect her—he always had, since they first bonded. But this was different. This wasn’t about her. This was about the man who lay unconscious, who had to be awakened before whatever magic or force pulling at him consumed him.

The other dragon shifted again, its massive body still curled protectively over the man, but its gaze flicked to Kaelath. It was a battle of wills, the air thick with silent challenge. The moment stretched, the only sound the rustling of the trees and the low rumble of both dragons’ growls.

Then, as if some unseen understanding passed between them, Kaelath’s posture shifted, though he didn’t move entirely. He was still as much a barrier as ever, but there was an openness in his stance—a subtle invitation for Arlaina to try again.

She took a step forward, but this time, her movements were more cautious, more respectful of the tension surrounding them. Slowly, she lowered her hand in front of her, her fingers outstretched, offering peace.

"I’m not here to hurt him," she said softly to the dragon. "I only want to help."

For a long, agonizing moment, the other dragon didn’t move. Its eyes narrowed, unreadable, yet something in its gaze shifted—just a slight change, an acknowledgment, perhaps.

Then, with a slow, deliberate motion, the other dragon unfurled one of its wings, creating just enough space between its body and the man for Arlaina to approach. The warning in its eyes remained, but the threat had receded, for now.

She didn’t hesitate. With Kaelath still at her back, keeping a watchful eye, Arlaina knelt beside the man. She placed a hand on his shoulder.

"I’ll break this," she whispered to herself, feeling the pulse of her own magic rise to meet the challenge.

As Kaelath watched over her, still positioned between Arlaina and the other dragon, she closed her eyes and began to weave her power, her storm-light magic mingling with the ancient forces that tugged at the man, seeking the cause of his collapse.

Whatever had happened here, she was determined to fix it—because no matter how fierce the dragons, nothing would stop her from saving a life.
