𐦍 Life vs Death Character 1 is a fully licensed Reaper along with his partner, Character 2. They’ve gone through three human years of training to ensure they know what they’re doing, and at the end of it all they were matched as partners. This means that whenever either character gets a call for one of the dead, their partner has to join them. They determine the cause of death, and then the pair has to decide whether the newly dead is worth revival (resulting in a ‘near death experience’ for the human) or if they should simply take the dead’s soul and move on. Each Reaper has a quota to meet from their boss, Grim. Depending on job performance, the quota numbers get higher and so does your pay. Quota changes each month. Character 1 is all about hitting the quota for that month and trying to climb up the corporate side of the afterlife, while Character 2 is more concerned about morality and often fights Character 1 to keep the humans alive but you can’t save them all. Anubis walked quietly down the old streets of Morrow. This was a Reaper town, a place kept dark for the aesthetics of their job. Morrow was a sort of rest stop for any working Reapers, left off the human map but left open for them along with Westwind, Old Brooke, Oasis Retreat and the most popular, White Nirvana. Morrow was his personal favourite, since he enjoyed the darker side of the Reaper career but his partner often left to hang out in White Nirvana. Which suited almost perfectly because that moral pain in the neck would choose the heavenly themed settlement. They often split after work to vanish into their comfort zones away from each other, though Grim had encouraged ‘trying to be friends’ despite the protests from Ankou that only fell on deaf ears.
The rain fell softly all around Anubis, the gentle tapping against the windows as he walked by created a very calming environment for the man. He barely felt the rain when it actually hit his hands. He was on his way to The Queen of Night cafe, which sounds a lot more dramatic than it really was. If you gave it a chance, it might be a little intimidating with its painted black exterior but once you got inside it became a very quaint and cozy establishment. The lights were a soft orange, imitating something similar to candlelight flame.
The countertop was a creamy ivory, and at the very end to the left was a black display full of small treats that always smelled absolutely divine. There were a few cupcakes on the top shelf, a few different flavors of cookies on the middle shelf and donuts on the bottom today. A rare smile spread across his face when he saw macarons stacked on stands above the display. Now those.. Those were the treats you gave him when you needed instant friendship for something. He loved those, and the vanilla ones had a very special place in his stone for a heart.
“Hey. Two vanilla macarons and a flat white, to go please.” Anubis ordered politely, a man who tried to keep it simple without inviting unnecessary conversation. The barista already knew his usual order, along with the special side treat before he even had to say it but it would be weird to just show up without talking and expect anything to happen.
He moved away from his spot in line to go wait while she made his coffee, grateful for the quiet while she worked. He quickly handed over the amount owed when she finished, took his drink and food and respectfully walked back outside. It was time for the next job, but he wasn’t going to rush. He held his drink and the little bag containing the macarons with his right hand while getting out his phone to call his partner. He took a quick sip while the cell rang.
“Are you ready, or should I wait for you at Ruby’s doorstep?”

A sharp, drilling tone repeats itself proudly, screeching it's song in notification. Her weary feminine hand gropes and grasps the crying device. Eyes widen in sudden clarity, seeing the contact in question. Levity flew from her bed and slumber, rapidly assembling herself for a day she should have been ready for. Holding out a few more rings than was expected, she finally answered, pulling herself together and out the door. Hair bouncing with every excited and eager step, Levity chirped into the phone, "Nearly ready! I'll be especially ready if you've gotten something for me." She notes the bustle in the background and the context of the call, knowing right where he's at. |

Anubis glanced down to the bag in his hand, regretting calling her almost immediately. If not before he had even done the action unconsciously. He shut the call off without even so much as a goodbye. He often didn’t say goodbyes, there were enough of those to go around for the humans and Ruby’s funeral to come. He glanced up at the dark sky, its clouds a mean grey and the stars didn’t seem to exist in this world. Morrow was rather dreary right now, but for him it was perfect. In a second he had changed location. The human world. The sun was high in the soft blue sky. Clouds seemed to be missing and the heat hit him immediately. He walked towards the white painted staircase leading up to the porch, his steps silent here. The humans wouldn’t be able to see them, other than the woman inside dying. This side of the realm could almost be considered frozen in time for the Reapers, though the crashing from inside was a sign the beauty wouldn’t last. Ankou leaned against the wall right by the front door to the house. It was white again against the blue walls, the paint faded and mixed into dirt that turned it a pale grey shade where Ruby touched it most often. He waited patiently for his partner to show up, whenever that would happen. Satan himself couldn’t tear his treats away from him, but he could lose his job should Levity complain too often to their boss. He lifted the small bag and opened it, taking out one of the small sugary treats. He took a bite out of the first one, begrudgingly chewing. There wasn’t much to enjoy on a work trip like this, sizzling in the sunlight. No doubt she would love it. He hated it. He glanced down into the bag again as if that would save them all for himself. Anubis knew he would have to save one for her arrival, but he didn’t have to be pleased about it. |
