Hello Writers of HEE,

I kinda had this idea after going on a teen fiction reading spree. As a reader or a writer, what overused tropes, stereotypes or anything you find commonly appearing in fiction works annoy the hell out of you?

Mine:
Teen main characters with ridiculous names (with the exception of fantasy characters) or normal names that are just spelt differently. Example; Pietyr (Peter. It's spelt Peter for godsake). Now, this is all well and good if the character is very well written, dimensional and dynamic, however, if a name is unique with the sole purpose of emphasising MY CHARACTER IS UNIQUE it makes me not like said character. They're usually Mary Sue characters too.

Mary Sue characters. Need I say more?

I'll probably add more later lol.

I want to hear your pet peeves! Share your woes!

Oh I've got a few but the ones that I hate the most are love triangles and the always cringey moment when the main character is introduced to the supernatural / magic world.

Love triangles with a "average", "boring" teen girl in between two of the sexiest boys on the planet.

Or, poor romance subplots wherein which the love interest is very clearly a toxic person, but the writer is attempting to encourage us to like them.

Common in fan fiction:

Original character (usually female), is either tough as nails, non nonsense badass who inexplicably falls for Hot Canon Guy (HCG) and becomes a gushy, mess in a complete shift in personality.

Original Character (usually female), is horrible abused, meek, and shy. Only HCG can bring her out of her shell.

Original Character is the sister/daughter/cousin/adopted daughter of Important Canon Character (ICC), has special powers out the bum, and is currently being lusted over HCG1 and HCG2, but is actually interested in HCG3 which eventually causes a fight between all three (even if said 3 are the bestest of friends, canonly). Did I mention she's best friends since childhood with ICC2?

I wish I could slam male OC characters but they're basically unicorns in the fandoms I exist in. I've literally seen one and the story was honestly just..."Meh".

Which brings me to the Reader Insert, first person, type stories. They're all universally bad if they're not written as a sort of character's recollection/diary.

Mary Sues that are clumsy- no, your otherwise perfect character who trips a lot is not "well rounded" or "flawed", she's annoying.
Also, super angsty brooding bad boys who are super great fighters. Bonus points if it's a male writer- just go ahead and say it's a self insert. We know you wish you were badass.

I hate it when the main character falls in love with someone who everyone else avoids because he is gloomy, sarcastic, and tough, and the main character is the only one that knows his "good" side.

Hilariously, that's an entirely plausible thing. People aren't "what you see is what you get".

That's just not good writing. XD

I think one of my biggest pet peeves is when the character just completely does a personality 180 when falling in love with someone.
