Delicate flakes floated gently down from the sky, coating everything beneath in a blanket of white. Lily McCoy made her way through the crowded sidewalk, her boots crunching softly against the fresh snow as laughter and music spilled from nearby shops. Garlands draped across lampposts glittered with ice, and the warm glow of storefront windows painted the evening in gold and amber.
She was halfway past a small bookstore when she collided with someone solid, the impact stealing her breath. Strong hands caught her by the elbows before she could stumble back. Lily looked up—and froze.
The man was tall, dark hair dusted with snow, eyes an unnerving shade of steel-gray that seemed to sharpen as they met hers. He wore a long black coat, the kind that looked untouched by the cold, and there was something still about him, like the world had paused just a beat too long around his presence.
“Careful,” he said, his voice low and smooth, carrying easily over the hum of the crowd. A faint, knowing smile touched his lips, as if this meeting were no accident at all.
