Maya wanted to comfort her friend but did not know how.
Suddenly the principal rushed up to their teacher, Mrs. Langley. "We need to get the children farther away," he said, " There's too great a chance the blaze will spread. " With that, the principal rushed off to tell the next teacher. Maya and Ellie's eyes went wide. Together they looked at the horrified teacher.
Mrs. Langley looked like she was about to faint.

Finally they felt a pulse. Mrs. L stood up. Ellie and Maya each grabbed an arm. The teacher told the students to get away and to head towards the parking lot.

Now all of the students were crying - Maya and Ellie included. The stress was getting to them all.
Maya forced herself to stay calm. "You heard her, guys," she said weakly, still holding Mrs. Langley's arm.
Ellie looked at Maya.
Maya realized half the students had not heard her. "Let's go," she ordered firmly in a loud voice. She motioned to Ellie and the two began to lead the frightened students toward safety. A classmate named Cassandra helped them.
