As a non native speaker I understand the spellings as:

grey = the color grey in general

gray = the (more or less) white color on a horse coat

but I might be totally wrong ;)

I prefer the look of Grey, same way I prefer colour over 'color', and realise over 'realize'.

I believe they are the british spelling rather than US spelling.

Yeah I agree with you Kiwi except for realized lol. The "Z" is the British spelling I assume! Since that's what we use in Canada, realize and realized
