Thank you all for the responses! I'd love to break a pony to drive too. My plan isn't to ride a Shetland all about the countryside or jump.

Thanks Summer and Cora and Trick for the weights, when it comes to the little guys, I'm quite clueless on how much they can weigh!

Coldwater Ridge, I have big horses too, but I haven't had a pony since I was little, and I want to find something more versatile with different aged little peeps.

Kuewi, your ponies are adorable! The gelding looks very solidly built :) Fossy is a cute name, and I'm glad it didn't cause any health problems!

I think finding something around the 12hh mark is a good bet for me.

this is the pretty girl I have my eye on. She's only 8 months old, but I wouldn't mind raising her and waiting for her to mature.

She's a Shetland pony cross (the reason I say cross is she's expected to mature well past her dams height, her dam being a Shetland)

At 8 months old she's already 10.2hh.

I have another question!

I know horses do a lot of their growing even as 2-3 year olds, how about ponies? I'm trying to get an estimated height on how big she'll be as a 3-4 year old. Do you think she'll grow another hand or so?

If she's 10.2 at 8 months she could well grow over 12hh :) what is she crossed with?

It's a mystery! The man bought the mare from someone, didn't know she was pregnant, and a couple months later she had the foal. I think she was out with Welsh's, or the similar, from what the man said. She's stocky looking, her bones look pretty big, so my hope is that she develops taller!

You'll probably find she will have reached almost her final height by 3. With shetlands they don't usually grow upwards any more after 3 years old, they start growing outwards :)

Thats a cute Pon :D

Are you able to see her?
There is a trick with taller horses that is pretty accurate, not sure if it works on ponies though..

I currently can't go see her (health problems prevent me from driving at the moment) but the owner is very helpful and is working with me greatly. I'll have to ask if he'll measure that (honestly I like the look of her enough to get her even if she stayed the same height) or I'll measure if/when she gets to my farm!

A Shetland pony is a breed but it can also be a mini
In Australia we have AMPS (Australian miniature pony society) and MHAA (Miniature Horse Association of Australia) for the minis and APSB (Australian Pony Stud book) for shetlands
Miniature horses are typically descended from Falabella but they can be part Shetland as long as they meet the associations requirements
A lot of it is type
Currently Miniature horses a very slight in build and look very araby (that's now a word) but they can also look more like your typical horse (slim, slightly stockier)
A miniature pony is a lot like a small Shetland and some of them often are

A miniature horse can be registered as a miniature pony as well and vice versa
Both are 8.2 hands or under (ish I can't remember the exact height requirements)
