groundwork.... and treats! Don't forget the treats ;-) When I start riding a new horse one of the most fun parts for me is to find out his favorite treats. All of them have their preference. one of mine adored the red Dots candy and another loved celery.

I'm not the biggest fan of treats with horses. My reason being because when they see you, you don't want them to think like "Oh! It's the treat lady!" you want them to be excited to be cared and loved on. I think join up, ground work and grooming are all very important. Taking them on walks in places they love, such as a pasture. Attempt massaging excercises. This helps the horse knows how his or her owner touches and loves on them.

Agreed.
There was a mare at my stable who I used to give treats to when I was mucking out her stall. After awhile she'd pin me into a corner and vigorously try to get the treats out of my pockets. Ended up ripping my jacket lol.

Treats are well, treats. To be used in moderation.

Ground work, grooming, and hand walking. I would not recommend treats, it's easy for a horse to get pushy from hand feeding treats.
