I had a mare years ago. She was a Karachay-Mongolian cross pony. She was nice and willing and anyone who wanted could ride her. However, she had beaten up the two geldings in her neighboring stalls and chomped on the face of a stallion when we tried to get her bred. Why she was so unfriendly to other horses around?

Like people, horses have different personalities. Some just don't like other horses. We have one mare at my work right now that gets along fine with other mares but can't stand geldings, and that's just how she is.

She's a lady who knows what she wants, and what she wants is not that stallion. She don't need no man.

The geldings were sort of idling in their stalls, and the mare bucked at them without a proper reason. She whinnied and squealed a lot. She hated dogs, too. She knocked the stray dogs who came in for shading with her teeth and chase them around. Cats were okay but they were not allow to sleep in her hay.

Maybe she didn't like the horses :p.

Most of the time mares will pick on geldings.
