Spirit from DreamWorks “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron” (2002) was confirmed as Dun! James Baxter did a soft confirmation in a rapid-style 2002 AMA, but Carlos Grangel has now confirmed both Esperanza and Spirit as dun.

If you take the original film as the only canon media, then Spirit can only be proven as (at least) bay dun. Film Spirit was designed without any father in mind. Given the factors, it would mean:

Esperanza = (e/e, Cr/n, D/—)

Spirit = (E/—, A/—, D/—)

If you take the original film and the Kathleen Duey series as canon media, then Spirit can still only be confirmed genetically as (at least) bay dun. However, Spirit’s sire in the book was an all black stallion. With this added factor, it would mean:

Esperanza = (e/e, A/—, Cr/n, D/—)

Spirit = (E/e, A/a, D/—)

If you take the original film, the Kathleen Duey series, and the Untamed movie as canon media, then Spirit can be confirmed genetically as dunskin. “Spirit Jr” is a buckskin with no dun; since Rain is a red with no cream, the cream must have been inherited from Spirit. With these added factors, it would mean:

Esperanza = (e/e, A/—, Cr/n, D/—)

Spirit = (E/e, A/a, Cr/n, D/nd2)

I personally don’t take the books or Untamed as canon, but I still believe that he’s a Dunskin! Do you think he’s a Dunskin or just a Bay Dun? Which media do you take as canon? I’d love to hear!
