Me too. She just lost her dachshund and I know she wouldn't have been able to handle losing her border collie as well

She thankfully got a second opinion and they knew instantly what was wrong! Gave him medication and he is improving every day. They did all the lab work and even took his temperature

That's all the vets we have left here unfortunately. Not to toot my own horn but I have fantastic instincts when it comes to my animals and I've NEVER been wrong. I clock the girl we had that had kidney failure months before it was evident and called two different vets out and was told it was nothing 🫩

I thought vets had to do rabies because it requires a signature and proof of vaccination and if you do it yourself theres no proof

I know. He taought us how to draw blood to run all our own tests too. We has a goat dairy farm for years so testing consistently was a must

And then they wanted a follow up appointment this week and she canceled. They proceeded to call her asking where she was even though she canceled through text and phone call

We unfortunately have a vet like that. My mom almost lost her dog a few weeks ago because they brushed her concerns off and said her dog was fine just had arthritis

The only reason we don't do rabies is because if you poke yourself you get it, or so I've heard.

SO true Athena. I miss that man, the only person to actually listen to what I had to say instead of going "well, looks fine! No tests are needed"

We do vaccine clinics. Rabies is 10 and then they have deals on other stuff

Right?! Vets charge way too much for those in my opinion. Our vet actually showed us how because he hated coming out to the farm so much because it took 2-3 hours out of his day. I was vaccinating cows, goats rabbits and dogs since I was like 13 lol

I have even looked into vaccine clinics, but there are none nearby.

You could ask them to show you next time! We asked our vet how to do it and he was happy to show. Probably because he didn't like getting spit on 😂😂

We do all of our own vaccines (minus rabies) on the livestock and we save so much money 😅

@Peggy, yes, although I ended up going to the one closer to home. I think I will just end up going to the one that is 30 minutes away from now on.

Was that the one you were asking about the other day, Hummer?
Hummingbird Meadows
01:53:37 Bird
@Athena, I personally am not comfortable doing that because I don't have any experience with it. He did need a rabies vaccine though.

So about 4 months back, my rising 5 year old gelding got a really bad and really deep cut on his left hind leg. He was lame for 2 days, and when he got "better" it got infected and all that jazz.
Im worried he has got some sort of muscle damage, as he drags the leg in trot (only when ridden. Which i am not doing right now) Could it maybe be that I just need to do polework with him to help strengthen the muscle's he's lost? Because there doesnt seem to be any pain as i can touch and squeeze the leg, and he trots fine on his own.
Im just worried that it might be a life long issue. Even if there is no pain involved I would love to do dressage with him when hes a bit older. And I am concerned this might affect his riding career.

Have you talked to the vet about this? They whould be able to give you some info on that. Maybe talk to a horse physio if you want more advice on muscle building. But yes, polework has helped build muscles up in my mare.

Pole work and Back on track boots at night may help, vetricin and medical ointment helps. Work lightly, reframe from hill work outs and unlevel turnout. at least handwalk every day, vitamn E also help, let me grab a link for the stuff i use. Controlled turnout is reccomended.
**Edit :
Also stretching the horses leg before and after riding will help alot. Warming up the horse on a line before turnout will help with preparing the muscle and also preventing further damage.
**Another edit but for link
This is the stuff i use and works great! I use this every day in my horses feed (Best fixed with soaked beetpulp OR grain soaked for a few minutes in hot tap water)

Where on the leg was the cut? Was it ever evaluated by a vet?

Go talk to a vet and you might need to do rehab. That is my only advice.

I'm going to second, third, and fourth the vet. If damage has been done to the muscle you're going to want medical eyes and help with her, this isn't something you just work to fix without that.

Im only 16 and my parents refused to get the vet out because it could be "treated at home". We're on the poor side tbh so paying vetbills and stuff is difficult. I offered to work and pay a vetbill but I need to he 18 or older to make a account and my parents arent allowed to because they have old vetbills that they never paid.
We also have no physio, chiro's, saddle fitter, farrier etc here as I live in a very small town. There arent stables, trainers or anyhing of the sort.

I havent ridden him in quite some time. As he is a twat and cracked three of his hooves after pulling his lead out of my hand and taking a run on some really hard ground.
But thank you for the advice! Ill check it out and see if I can find it here!

We live next to the animal shelter, so the vet comes out quite often. And the next time he comes i'll ask him if he'd be able to check him.
