I've never had the luxury of riding a horse or going to a barn frequently and I'm not sure if I ever will. Anyone wanna describe how it feels to work with horses and ride them? I can't imagine the experience right now but I want to lol

For me it's like going to a second home where I can be myself with no worries where I can always count on being able to smile when I see their faces pop over the rails or hear their nickers when they see me coming <3 When I'm riding it's the feeling of freedom with the power of a 1000+ lb animal underneath you that you learn how to communicate with without words :)

There are some many other ways to explain the feeling of riding and being around horses, but hopefully this helped a bit <3

It's like a familiar pair of jeans and boots (or the English equivalent). The crunch of gravel as you pull up to the barn, and squint into the distance toward the pasture to see if any of the horses are visible. The smell of leather and dust as you walk into the barn and grab your equipment. Watching where you step to avoid mud and fresh manure as you go to catch your horse. Feeling his silky smooth coat if it's summer, or his fuzzy coat if it's winter. Getting swatted by his tail while you're trying to brush him off. My horse would lick my hands like a dog. Getting mud all over your hands on some days as you try to pick out his feet, because his hooves are covered in the mud he walked through. I always did my horse's hooves in the same order, so he would know which one I was going to next and lift it before I even got there. Their noses are soft, and the bases of their ears are soft. I'd stroke my horse's ears as much as he'd stand still for. Sometimes when I got to the barn, he'd still by laying down and I'd go over and sit on him. Getting your toes stepped on.

Feeling his heart pound under you on a windy day when he saw something move. His impatience when you get to your favorite cantering/galloping spot. Him running you into tree branches, and occasionally slipping in the mud. Feeling your own heart pound with adrenaline when he spooks and you almost come off.

And silly memories. My horse never bit me or my mom. But one of the few times my dad came out to see him, Buddy nipped him in the butt. My dad never stood in front of my horse again, lol.

One of my friend's horses laid down while I was riding, once. I was lucky I moved my leg in time and didn't get pinned.

It's also getting to know their quirks. Which horse likes to kick which other horse. Which horse likes to turn and bolt for home, which one is lazy, which one spooks the easiest, which one pulls back while tied. Which one is prone to lameness or saddle sores.

To get an experience of what it’s like to own a horse, you can go into a paddock and start lighting $100 notes on fire, and laugh maniacally while you’re doing it!

It’s early mornings and dark evenings; it’s being outside in hail, wind, rain and snow; it’s your horse destroying her stable because you were five minutes late with dinner; it’s carting wet rugs around when your horse has discovered how to take them off; it’s being excited because you paid $50 to enter a show and won a $2 ribbon; it’s cracked skin, lips and nails, man hands, mysterious bruises, broken bones and helmet hair.

But it’s also the freedom of being lent wings; it’s the warm breath on your face and listening to them chew hay peacefully at night; it’s being greeted with a whinny in the paddock; it’s learning a silent language and how to be patient; it’s meeting amazing people and friends for life; it’s that sense of accomplishment and pride when you achieve something you’ve been trying to for months or years; it’s a lifestyle, not just a hobby, and I’m both lucky and unlucky enough that it’s also my career.

If you can at any stage, get involved and get some lessons, you (hopefully!) won’t regret it ;)

having the feeling that you can communicate and have a friendship with a animal who could kill you, but choses not to. the feeling of riding simply just feels like you are flying

It's really awesome and life-changing. Before I started riding lessons it was something I could only dream about but then my sister and I started lessons and it really changed my life.
Just being around the barn and getting to know all the horses is amazing. Each horse or pony has a unique and lovable personality and it makes you smile to see them all. It's a lot of dirty work and getting muddy but it's also a lot of fun and personally I don't mind getting dirty.
Then when you actually ride the horse you have a massive animal underneath you and there's a special bond, the horse will most often listen to you (depending in the horse of course) and you and the horse can communicate so well. Sometimes I feel like horses understand me more than some people do. It's amazing the things a human and a horse can do together.
I really hope for your sake that you get the chance to ride horses. It's definitely worth it and it can make you feel a lot better just being around such beautiful, intelligent animals.

Thank you all for helping me out <3 I've loved horses for 11 years now and I've only been around them once or twice in my life. To be honest, when I'm not around horses, I constantly feel like a part of me is missing. Like I'm supposed to be with them. That probably sounds weird xD
But I have good news too! My step dad and my mom are planning on taking me to a barn to have riding lessons someday, probably my birthday ^-^
