Not entirely true. I don't know your experience, but having worked with graded stakes horses I can assure you this has some true to it and some falseness. Racehorses tend to pull against the bit, so they do run faster, but only with a shorter rein. If you go to the track, notice at the end of the race the jockeys sit up and pull - the horse slows. So long as you're sitting up and pulling (using your seat helps too) the OTTB will slow. :) |

I wouldn't suggest using a horse who has fractured a hind leg for another heavy duty speed event - barrel racing. Poor dude would probably do much better with some chill flat work/trails if he even recovers enough to be sound let alone ridden again...
