I'm very puzzled. I went from never using round bales, ever, to suddenly needing them, and also had to buy hay for the first time in literal, RL years. I have five hay pastures that produce 6000 bales each, and I've always had enough to sell overages, until last month.

I've been putting horses in pastures for RL YEARS and never needing round bales as far as I knew. I have 100 horses in a pasture that I had to buy round bales for this morning and the pasture has thick grass. I am very puzzled. I noticed this last month.

Well they don't unless there's no grass so that doesn't make any sense

There was a bug a while ago where the game was saying you didn't have a surplus for what you needed even though you had enough or more. Could this be the same thing? Oddly enough I can't find the forum anywhere

It was stating we had a surplus, but wouldn't let us feed. So I dunno if it's what you're thinking of.
