If you match using a yearling, you have to change the birth year date

Does a horse have to be a freshie in order to match with a stud

Ok so my turn to dump complaints on people ;)
My Dad's horse, Buddy, is one of the best friends I have. My own horse is pretty snarky but Buddy is always calm and sweet. He doesn't know a lot but he tries so hard to please everyone and I
'd trust him to carry a newborn. He's just amazing, and since he lives with me I've sort of adopted him as my own.
We got him three years ago, and beforehand he lived with a friend of ours. She did her best to take care of him as well as she could, and when I continue know I don't blame her at all, he was beyond happy staying with her. She gave her horses oats, which is controvercial I know and I'm not trying to start a fight. She gave Buddy an icecream pail every day- I feel like that's a lot.
Fast forward to three weeks ago, he came up lame all of a sudden, which was really odd. At first we thought it was just his wonky gait since he's got terrible confo and walks like a drunk lol. But it got worse and worse and he was in a lot of pain. WE took him to the vet and they did an xray and saw that he has arthritis in his off front hoof as well as apparently laminitis? The laminitis isn't that bad; he hasn't foundered at all and if you look at the exray the angle of his coffin bone isn't really steep. They said it was from the old owner's oats and nothing we did, and I'm the one feeding him; he gets no oats, low-sugar, hasn't broken into anything; spring grass was monitered, no feed changes right before the incident, etc., and I don't think we did anything, but it's still odd that the lminitis showed up three years after we left the place.
Now he's on previcox which is doing nothing, and hopefully we'll get some stronger meds soon. For the arthritis part it stinks becasuse we can't inject it since it's in his hoof. He's my best friend, and I love him, and I don't even care that I can't ride him, I just want him to be not in pain. Some days he's super lethargic and his eyes- they just don't look right. THey're not alert and they're full of pain. Other days he's doing pretty good- he limps like heck but he just walks through it and doesn't seem to care.
So. That's my big rant of the day. THanks for reading.
Ugh.
