WolfDancer, I thought about English mastiff dogs. My grandma and grandpa have one and have had several before that. The problem with them is that the breed is declining in health. Every dog my grandparents have had except for one that passed in 1998 has had health issues. The one before their latest dog (both several thousand dollar dogs) was put down at 2 because of health issues. That's a huge reason I've looked into cane Corsos which are a mastiff breed with less health issues.
Tranquility Jello has dogs in both obedience and bite work I think...

hmm, I forgot to mention but the dog also had great dane in it as well :) if that helps anything, and I hope your situation gets better! Sending hugs your way!

thank you Wolf, I am still looking into breeds. I think a dane would be cool (they are scared of everything though lol), a doberman is at the top of the list with malinois/dutch shepherds at a close second and rottweilers are tied for second. But I worry about Mals/Dutchies because I do live in the city. While I am a very active person, I only want a dog to live the best quality of life and to make sure i can meet it's needs. With the high energy of a malinois and most shepherd breeds, I just need to look more into how they do in the city. I have seen a lot of people in my building with GSDs and Mals but I always kind of question if it is cruel or not for them to live here unless they go on very long walks/runs several times a day and get some serious exercise in. But I could say the same thing for all of the husky owners in the building. anyways,I am just going to keep doing research on it and see what may be the best fit as far as breeds go but I am 100% up for suggestions.

A dog is definitely a good deterat.
I have a 110lb American Bulldog/Catahoulaix
And just the look of him, makes people cross the street if we are out walking.
(Granted he is the most sweet natured animal, but he can be intimidating)
We live out in the country and my husband sometimes has to work out of the area.
Well one day, I had a man dressed in all black (black hat, shirt, etc) come and knock on the front door. I could see him through the window.
He left one of those internet flyers in the door. Ok whatever.
Suspicious thing. He carried no ID badge on him
He came back a second time, knocked on the door.
This time I let Buddy in. Buddy doesn't bark, instead he stood on the window edge and watched this strange man. So now there is a 100lb+dog watching this man, because he was on the window edge. He was as tall as his man. Needless to say the guy left and never came back.

Jello has several dutchies! You could always send her a message and I'm sure she'd be more than happy to give you some advice since she does bite work with her own and I believe working on getting titles on them :)

I actually think Jello has Dutch shepherds rather than Mals too. But I'm not sure.

Get a mastiff. They are huge couch potatoes that don't require a massive house, but can look quite intimidating.

I think you should as long as they're ok with it. The dog can protect you and keep you company all at once. I have a dog, and I'm forever grateful for him ❤ he's also very protective even though he's an Aussie cattle dog and kinda short (if a stranger comes up to us, he will growl but won't bite unless we're in danger) but very sweet around people he's seen at least a couple times. Treats are his favorite, and he'll be your best friend if up you give him one. And now I'm just rambling about my dog lol. Sorry if this wasn't helpful

Hi! Thank you all for your tips! I am currently in the process of trying to move out. I can not break my lease but I found a way to get housing for free on campus. So I will be trying to do that next year. They allow dogs in some dorms but not all of them unless they are service dogs (task trained). But in one of the dorm halls they do allow dogs as emotional support animals. However, if I live on campus I honestly will not need a dog since they have 24/7 security. But if I am unable to move out of this place and away from the center of the city where all the bad stuff happens, I will be getting a dog.
