Can someone please explain why so many of my fellow native english speakers cannot for the life of them seem to grasp the concept of certain basic grammar aspects? It's mainly an issue on Tiktok(but then again, what isn't?) and I thankfully haven't seen this here on HEE, but I cannot stand social media because of how painful it is to try to read these sentences😭 I've compiled a list of all the things that hurt my poor brain, and now you all get to suffer with me xD - Could/should/would of. I know could've sounds like could of but I promise you it's not. It's a contraction. Could of is not correct. They're/their/there. There is a location- over there. They're is a contraction- They are. Their is possessive- the blue car is theirs. You're/your. Again with the contractions xD You're is just you are. Your is possessive. So it's not your beautiful, it's you're beautiful. - I'll probably add more eventually, I need to let my inner english teacher calm down right now😂😭

Yes that too! Nobody can agree on what each response means xD Technically "no, I don't mind" is the correct one, but I guess people hear the word "no" and don't hear the rest of the sentence haha.

People don't care enough to work on and improve their grammar/spelling because A. spellcheck/autocorrect, B. chatspeak is part of the culture online, and C. if they can get their point across without having to put in effort to improve, they don't. This has just been my experience. It's always been a pet peeve of mine, but hey, I'm not the one coming off as uneducated and immature.

What drives me crazy is when people start making sentences out of shortened words or single letters. You know, when "you" becomes "u" and it turns into a mess of gibberish you can barely read because over half of the sentence isn't even spelled out, and the other half is poor grammar. . This is why I don't social media... And especially why I don't TikTok.

It's like you need a whole language course to understand a sentence, I swear half of the time i just guess xD

I won't lie, sometimes I just don't respond. When they're an adult and can't act mature by speaking like one, I decide it isn't worth my time trying to decipher lol

It's literally trying to read shorthand but it's not standardized and people just make shit up for no reason other than to be lazy x'3 Stormsong Manor said: People don't care enough to work on and improve their grammar/spelling because A. spellcheck/autocorrect, B. chatspeak is part of the culture online, and C. if they can get their point across without having to put in effort to improve, they don't. Bingo, Ven! I feel like autocorrect just dumbs people down, AND its been affecting online literature too. Short stories have declined in quality to the point of just being "Run, Spot, run" xD

While I'll admit I do like spell check, since I can't spell worth a crap at times. Thank you deslyexia (spelling?) for that. But yeah it drives me bat shit crazy seeing people type "u" instead of "you", or "da" for "the". I normally can figure out what people are saying when they do the chat speak stuff. The only things I'll really tollerate being sent to me in a text or chat speak is lol (because laugh out loud is a bit much to type out), WTH, WTF, IDK, and a few others. Some are due to the lenght of typing them out, the others are more for polite people who really don't want to swear.

I admit I use chatspeak sometimes, like the basic ones like "lmao, lol, wth/wtf" eccetera, but yes I have the same problem with italians 😭I was born in the US and I lived there for 9 years, my dad did make me learn Italian when I lived there but I went to school and speaked English, and now that I live in Italy, I speak better Italian than some of my classmates- they spell wrong basic grammar like "hanno/anno" (have/year) and will end up saying "they year..." it drives me lowkey crazy to be honest.
