Well, its about time I join the aquarium squad of HEE.
Today, I purchased my first fish and tank. Its a 7 litre tank with heater and filter, and Ive stocked it with two plastic plants (because its a miracle my succulents are still alive...) and a gorgeous red betta boy. I am thinking about grabbing some neon tetras to keep him company, but that will be put on the backburner whilst I save up some money again...

Also brought a teal, aqua and black betta, as my homeroom at school also doubles as a marine studies room, and there was a spare tank that myself and our homeroom teacher has decided to stock with some fish and live plants. The plan is to later purchase a female, and breed some bettas which we can sell to the other marine studies school in our area.

Will post a picture of both setups later, if I can remember lol.

Update, little red betta, Finn, died during a water change a week into me having him :( We think he had fin rot from the store tanks that we didn't treat fast enough...

But, a new teal and black boy was brought :) Realised he had white spot when we got him home. Treated him for that. Now he's developed fin rot, but only on his tail? :(

Was the white spot only in one spot on his body, or was it in many smaller spots? Did it look fuzzy?

Depending on where you are and what stores are around you, products like BettaFix and Melafix by API contain tea tree oil which can help some bacterial infections. However, if it's available I'd use KanaPlex by Seachem, it's a much more effective medication to treat fin and tail rot :) Just be aware that if there's carbon in your filter (in most small tanks it's contained in the cartridge) then it'll remove any of the medication you try to use. If you remove the cartridge the filter should have no problems circulating the water to keep it oxygenated. I run an Aqueon Quietflow filter in my quarantine tank because I like the ease of the cartridge, but when I'm dosing medication I take the cartridge out and let it run without media to keep the water flow going.

Just make sure the little guy keeps eating, as that'll help keep his immune system up. Some foods have garlic in them which may help give his immune system a boost as well. Once he's recovered from the initial infection, high protein foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp will help him grow his tail back. Beyond that just keep his water clean and he should recover.

Feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any questions, I'd be more than happy to help :)

Thanks for the help DELTA!
Treated his water with Blue Planet Multi Cure, the white spot was gone with in 3 days. Turned everything in my tank blue but xD
Yesterday, I brought a new 21 litre tank! The little guy loves it! I’ve stocked it with some live plants, he’s obsessed! He still has some shredding on his tail and fins, but I’m beginning to think its from getting ‘stuck’ in the older filter, or tearing it on the old plastic plants. Hopefully his diet of blood worms will help it regrow :)
He looks so small in his tank!

Ok, so I have an old 2 (It is not actually a 2 gallon! I went downstairs to check again to find that it is a 4 gallon) gallon tank that is sitting unused in my basement. I really want to take it up, clean it out, put some water in, and put a new beautiful fish in it. I have no idea what kind of fish I would like though. I have had beta before, but I would like to look into some of my other options. Maybe the fish experts of HEE could help me out a bit?

I currently have a filtered 4 gallon tank (I know it’s small. I have another way bigger tank that is being used already), natural looking gravel/rocks, a few fake plants that I would be willing to replace with real ones, a heater, and I am currently in a spot where I can buy more things if needed.

Any help finding a freshwater fish would be greatly appreciated xD I have been doing a lot of research, but thought it wouldn’t hurt to ask here.

Help!

What are some algae eating, tank cleaning, betta friendly fish or snails that I can stock my tank with to assist keeping it clean?

Considering Albino catfish looking things (dorys?). 21L tank. So Id like something that wont reproduce or grow big.

I'm assuming there is a filter and heater in this tank? If so there's a couple of options. Is the algae generally on the sides of the tank? Or are you looking for all around cleaning of decorations, plants etc as well? If you have any idea about your tank parameters such as temperature, pH etc there are others that might be an option as well, but in general:

- Mystery or apple snails, you'd only need 1 for that tank. Apple snails get quite large, and both species contribute a fair bit to the bio load.
- Zebra nerite snail or thorned nerite snail, again you'd only need 1 for your tank

For the catfish, I'm assuming you mean Corydoras, also commonly called cory catfish. Those guys are a bottom feeder, so they won't help with the algae, however they may eat leftover food on the bottom depending on what you're feeding the betta. Unfortunately they're not a substitute for regular tank maintenance, ie they won't eat the poop and you do need to do a gravel wash at some point. They're also a schooling fish, so ideally they'd like to be in groups, usually at least 3. I'd be cautious about putting them ion a tank your size for a few reasons. Firstly they get at least 2 inches in length, although I've seen them as big as 4 inches. If you have a few of them, the bottom will be a little crowded once they're fully grown, depending on your tank shape. A second thing to look out for is that some bettas aren't always happy with having a cory with them in a tank that small. It depends a bit on the bettas personality, and I'd say in my experience it's about a 50/50 shot that he'll either be totally cool with them or attack them every time they move. I'm not saying it won't work, but it'll take knowing your betta a little better and being prepared that it may not work out :)

I do poke in and check the forum, but if you need a quicker response feel free to shoot me a PM :)
