Hey!
How exciting!

I am in Aussie and I havea few Walstad-style planted tanks. Basically a layer of dirt with a sand cap on top. This style is supposed to be pretty much self sufficient as far as filtration goes etc.

Ive had several types of fish in it and it is an open top tank. All do really well.
I still just have the standard LED light it came with and it seems to go okay.

I will often go and get submerged logs, sticks and branches from our Dam to put into new tanks before fish to get the good bactieria growing etc.

Plants all seem to be going well and honestly, i only clean it once or twice a year.

Have fun with it. Father Fish is a good resource for Walsted-style tanks.

I impulsively purchased a fish tank the other day... In my defense I've wanted one for over a year, and I just happened to find a really cheap one that fits perfectly on my shelf.

I have a rough idea for it, but I wanted some opinions/tips, from people who have owned planted tanks before.

The tank is 61L (around 16gallons I think), 60cm long, 30cm deep, 35cm tall.

Ideally I want to have an established tank before I even consider adding a fish, I am set on the idea that if I cannot care for a fully planted tank, then there will be no fish at all, I want to avoid using artificial hides, plastic plants etc entirely.

I absolutely adore the way betta fish look, so when I do eventually add a fish it would likely be a betta. Although I'm open to alternatives if anyone knows any similar fish! or ideas for others that can co-exist alongside them.

I'm hoping to have it semi riparium-like. I want plants that will grow out the top of the water, that also need to be cat-safe. Any ideas of plants that do this? I've heard about parlor palm, and pothos, although I'm less a fan of the way pothos grows. Note: It will not be in easy reach of my cats, so I'm not super worried about plants that could pose a risk, just as long as they aren't like 'highly toxic, wouldn't even have in the same room as a cat' type plant.

Then as for plants in the tank, I quite like the look of anubias, cryptocoryne and sword plant (Echinodorus?). Especially because I like the leaves, I know bettas like to lay around lol, so I thought maybe a couple of those would be perfect for him. But I would also quite like more options too.

I'm also hoping to find a sort of aquatic grass, like just a plant that will create a small layer of greenery over the bottom. Which I'm still looking around for, I've seen this glossostigma, it's neat but I think I prefer something 'grassier'.

What do people tend to use for planted aquariums in the way of substrate? I know that refardless what I use, I would love to add a thin layer of sand over it, for my own personal aesthetics lol. I've heard a bit about like aquasoil and fluorite, but I'm not 100% sure.

An issue though is that the tank will not have a lid, as I want plants to grow out, hence me asking about other fish similar to a betta I'm aware they are nutorious jumpers, what would be the best way to avoid this happening? Or do they not really jump as much as I'm concerned about.

And then lastly, thing I'm having the biggest difficulty with is lights. I'm assuming an LED light, besides that no clue where to even start or look.

Heaters and filters aren't something I've looked a whole lot into yet, although I know I need them eventually. I'll probably go for a hang-on filter, I find them aesthetically pleasing and beleive they're fairly good for bettas specifically. I've also not looked into cycling processes, since my main goal isn't to have is fish-ready, at least not until all the plants are fairly well-established.

Please be nice 😅 never done this before and a lot of what I have at the moment is based on prior knowledge, I've not gotten around to much of my own research yet.

Well, my Aquarium experiment is officially over. About a month ago my tank sprung a link and I had to emergency empty it and euthanize my fish over night. I was very sad about my fish as they were awesome and very beautiful. Well, today the junk man came and hauled off my tank and it's cabinet. So I am sad. :(

Ooh Cadence, god bless those lovely fish. How sad.
They probably lived much longer happier lives than in the wild.

So im looking at restarting my 55 gallon tank that got abandoned after my goldfish died, but I had very very basic stuff as it was just a goldfish tank. Some sand, a few plants. Nothing fancy. I essentially need a new everything due to neglect and simply not being as good as I want.
.
**Disclaimer**
I will have this tank up and running and cycled before any fish are purchased, they will not be going into a new tank!
.
I want to do a planted tank (WITHOUT co2.. I do not have co2 money) with a few small schooling fish as well as some assorted shrimp. So far I am set on:
  • Otocinclus Catfish
  • Chili Rasboras
  • Ember Tetras
The Maybe List:
  • Dwarf blue gouramis
  • Honey gourami
  • Zebra danios
My list of things to get so far is:
  • Fluval 407 filter
  • Fluval M200 submersible heater
  • Thermometer (Specific one not chosen, would love suggestions)
  • Fluval Plant 3.0 Lights
  • API Master test kit
  • Aquasoil? (Not sure if needed but recommendations are appreciated!)
  • Water conditioner (Recommendations please!)
Is there anything else I should get for this? Any recommendations for other brands/specifics that ive posted?
.
I would also greatly appreciate any plant recommendations! Fairly beginner friendly as I dont have a whole lot of experience with plants (goldfish ate eveything but anubias and java fern).
.
Thank you to anyone who gives input! <3

So I was given a 4g tank... I'm back and forth on what to do with it and need some ideas! My fist thought was doing a paludarium, then thought about trying to do a pico reef tank but quickly decided against that. I don't have enough time right now to take that challenge on. So then I circled around to maybe a freshwater tank of sorts but no idea what I'd put in it. It's such a small tank animals would not be going in it. I'm think a paludarium is gonna be my best choice. Anyone have any other ideas or suggestions?

We have multiple towns out of power right now. We have a -30°F windchill right now. I have no idea when I'll get power back. I have a 125 and a 10 gallon tank. What should I do to keep the tank warm and keep oxygen in the tank. I may have to go somewhere if it gets too cold for my little kids.

Honestly a small group of neocaridina shrimp in a live planted aquarium with some cholla wood wouldn't be to bad.

I love fish, but my mom is scared of them. I was so happy when she let me get a betta. He was a green halfmoon betta (I don't have any pictures as this was years ago.)
He unfortunately passed after some years with us, but I absolutely would get another :D
