Here's the newest addition to my family, Stuart. He's been around since this past fall, but he's finally starting to look like a grown up at approximately 10 months old. I can spot dog breeds no problem, but I'm not as experienced with purebred cats and would love to have some guesses on what kind of mix he might be. His body type is long and lean, and he has a very long, thin tail.

He's so cute! I don't know the breed, but we also have a lanky cat with a crazy long tail. We call him snakey boi.

Hey! So I know this is a few days late, but I figured I would respond anyways! :)
.
Most household cats now are just labelled as "domestic "x" hair", whether it be short, medium, or long. The reason cat breeds don't exist as strongly as dog breeds, is simply because purebred cats are usually traits specifically pulled from "normal" (domestic) cats. Since he's domestic, his lineage likely isn't traceable as domestic itself is basically a breed at this point (the most common type of cat), and any smaller traits you see that correlate with an actual breed, aren't really related. He's a kitty with no particular, specific line of traits someone has bred down. "Domestic" <3
.
What I can tell you is he is 100% standard issue cat, with a strong side of cuteness and tabby (not Mau) with tuxedo markings in coat colour! :)

Ears and head shape show a bit of Oriental and they are known to have long tails. However if you don't know his breeding he's a standard moggie (basically the cat version of the dog term mutt).

If you want to know for sure what your cat might be, then do a DNA test (I had to do that with my solid back cat Johnny because people kept asking me if he's a Bombay and I got tired of the question. Johnny is part Bombay which is a black domestic shorthair mixed with Siamese breeding, but he's domestic short hair mostly.) However Stuart def a domestic short hair, with tuxedo pattern.

And if he's a good kitty does the breed really matter?

Cats are just cats 😅😭. Unless they're purebred and a visibly noticeable breed like a sphynx, Persian, Siamese, Norwegian forest, etc, it's nearly impossible to tell. They're not like dogs which are very unique. However, my cats are a quarter ragdoll! In one cat, you could never tell. However her brother is HUGE and just *flops* around. He is pure liquid. I wonder if there are reliable genetic tests you could buy?

He reminds me of my grandmothers Siamese. Slim, and biggish ears. And often creamy coloured. So Egyptian or Siamese mungrel cat.
Does he have a load voice? Siamese do.
Mungrels are more intelegent and better health in general.
He's lovely.

I've now written this 3 times and timed out the first two. Cats don't really have breeds. Yes, I know they have purebred show animals, but those aren't really breeds like dog breeds are.

Dogs were bred for specific personality traits, shapes and sizes so they would be better tools for humans and many people liked to have dogs from purebred lines to ensure they got the tool for the job, so pedigrees were created. But even when I was a kid in the 60s, lots of people who needed a herding or hunting dog would buy one from someone who raised "purebreds", but didn't necessarily have pedigrees and were actual working dogs doing their thing instead of imposters who only looked like sort of like them and won shows. We used to laugh at the dog show dogs and call them "Miss America dogs" as our border collies and heelers were always muddy from running livestock and theirs were always freshly brushed and immaculate.

Now to cat breeds. They were created in the 1890s out of the desire of the rich European women who collected cats from all over the world like plates or dolls as status symbols to be able to have shows and let everyone see their exotic collectors' items like their husbands showed off their dogs. Cats didn't need reshaping or to have their instincts molded into anything but what they are--premier vermin killers. So the breeds were named after where the street cats these women paid lots of money to have imported were found. Siamese were the strays from Thailand, Persians from the Middle East, Angoras from Turkey (Ankara), etc.

So cat breeds are an imitation of dog breeds without the meaning behind them. Yes, they could have some personality differences, but that's because they behaved however their environment required them to behave and their bodies and coats are different because breeds in steamy SE Asia didn't need undercoats or long hair or a fat layer to keep them warm and cats in Scandinavia did.

Now we're in the internet era and people sell cats online, so of course (just like dogs) everyone and his cousin is out to create the next popular craze in designer breeds. They'll even go so far as to purposely breed what should be culls (I mean they and their littermates and parents should be neutered and sold as pets, not that they should be killed, though that's often what was done in the past). Scottish Folds and Munchkins have an abnormality in their cartilage formation that is like some forms of human dwarfism. Painful forms. Early onset arthritis, sometimes in childhood, with joints that slide around and grind bone on bone....it's cruel torture to breed these on purpose and they should be outlawed. If one crops up in a litter, fine, because these are mutations that do sometimes, but I'm talking about actually purposely doing this to cats for money. It's nasty. I'm sure if the people who bought them knew this they would stop buying them.

Now to DNA testing. Don't waste your money unless you know the cat's parents were some particular breed. I'm a geneticist by training and I can tell you they are little more than guesswork if your cat has more than 4 breeds in it. The tests look for markers that are common to only one (or a few) breeds and the chances of finding those goes down the less of that breed's DNA is in the animal. So your cat could be 1/16 Siamese, but will it show up? Maybe, maybe not. Or maybe that 1/16 Siamese DNA combines with 1/16 Russian Blue DNA and the two markers they find coincidentally together are found together in Persians, so the test says your cat is 1/8 Persian. It's all guesswork. Educated guesswork, but still guesswork.

In the end, a cat is a cat is a cat under the hood. Enjoy him, he's beautiful. He looks much like my late feral cat that was actually trapped at 4 weeks old from a colony in Santa Clara, CA. No telling what's in him, but for sure he's all cat.

Also, as an aside, Bombay cats in America were started in Kentucky by breeding Burmese to black domestic short hair cats with known Burmese ancestry. (Burmese and Siamese and all pointed breeds are genetically black cats with a temperature-dependent form of albinism (cold parts are dark, warm parts are diluted), so they quite often produce black offspring with non-pointed cats).

@sagebrush Totally agree most cats end up being lovable mystery mixes unless they have really distinct breed traits. Even within the same litter you can get completely different builds and personalities, like your ragdoll mixes showing totally different traits. Genetics can be funny like that. There are cat DNA tests now (similar to dog tests) that claim to estimate breed ancestry and sometimes health traits. From what Ive seen, theyre interesting for curiositys sake, but not always super precise since most domestic cats dont have well-documented breed lineages the way dogs do. Still, if someones really curious, it can be a fun experiment. At the end of the day though, most of them are just perfect little house panthers with their own quirks, pedigree or not. And since were talking pets, good hygiene and feeding setups make a big difference too if anyones looking for affordable pet hygiene and feeding supplies, Bulk-Price.com has some useful options worth checking out.

Mystery is solved. I did a DNA test on him and here are his results:
35% potato
20% Long Boi
15% Fraggle
20% laser beam
10% non-Earth elements
