Lib, how do you make realistic lighting in the background?
You have to pay attention to the original shadows. If all the shadows are going to the left, I'm going to add a light source to the right. To add light, I take a large soft round brush and on a new layer, I paint in light using a light off white. I then set the layer mode to soft light, screen, or overlay (depending on how intense I want the light to be) and then adjust the opacity of the layer. I usually like to have light on one side or corner of the image, and then using the same technique on a new layer a paint a slight vignette opposite my light source using a dark color from the background. Then I set that layer mode to soft light or multiply.
If that didn't answer your question please let me know as I'm not quite sure that's what you meant. :)

4. Possibly, but I do not have gimp on my current computer. I will say, most of the techniques are pretty much the same for both gimp and PS.
5. I would absolutely recommend searching DA and YouTube for mane/tail tutorials. Jello also has a good one:

And there are many more out there that work just as well, if not better. Practice a lot, study lots of others painted hair, and find what works for you. :)
6. I suppose this depends on what I'm going for, and what I have to work with. If I'm doing a natural looking piece, and/or if the stock horse I am using has a nice mane and tail to start with, I will probably smudge and paint in some highlights and a few low lights. If I'm doing a fantasy piece in which I want the horse to have long, curly, or unusual hair, or if my stock horse's hair is atrocious I will paint it myself.
I personally feel like my smudged hair is not very well done, and so if I can't get it the way I like I will fall back on my painting skills. But as a personal preference I really love well done smudged hair just as much as beautiful painted hair.
