Hi, Gimp is primarily used on laptop for several reasons. It actually isn't avaliable on ipad for this reason or chromebook as it is not compatable with those devices. If you continue using gimp on your phone, you are going to have issues actually getting it to work and have the features that it should. I recommend switching it to a laptop or PC if you want it to work properly. Since you are on your phone, if you are cutting out and layering an image, you go file>import as layers and then you should select the image that you want. The image selected will enter as a new layer. If you want to cut out an image from that layer while it is on top of another layer that is of an image, use the laso tool and find a way to invert the selection(this is why a laptop or pc is easier since it is just a right click). Once you do that, you can erase everything around the selected area without the selection being effected and since you selected a specific layer, the background will not be erased. I prefer cutting out images on their own. You just have to have it on the alpha channel. go to layer options>alpha channel>add alpha channel and this will allow for the background to be a png and transparent when erased. If you do not have or can not find one of these things, GIMP is probaly not working properly. I hope this helps.

In this case I'd try using something called Ibis paint X. It's much more mobile friendly.
