What's the best technique to doing roan in photoshop? Or how do you all do the Roan?

Also, if a horse has a black mane and tail what's the best way to change the color? I found a way, but it kind of takes away from the detail of the mane.

I'm not the best, but what I do for roan is feather select the body, then use desaturate and brighten to make it look lighter and greyer. For changing the color of manes/tails, I free select the area, copy it to another layer, and use saturation, brightness, color balance, or whatever is needed to create the color you are looking for.
