Can I use an iPad or something similar for creating avatars? And would it be better than my laptop?

You can, except a laptop is preferable. You can get a stylus for a iPad but it's much easier to do everything with a laptop program |

I use my laptop. It's not touch screen but a mouse works fine as I'm not a colorist. I personally wouldn't use an iPad. |

I would not purchase an iPad for making art.
If you have a computer that runs software like Photoshop or GIMP, I would check out the Wacom drawing tablets to take your art to the next level. |
