They look a lot better! They do still look kinda like a blob on the ground though. Thing about where the lights coming from and the shape of the horse. Looking at RL photos as well as others art can help give you an idea of where shadows should be. Make sure your edges are nice and soft. The hardness and the darkness/lightness of a shadow will vary between pieces. Overall it just takes a lot of practice.

My best critique would be to work on realistic shadowing, like others have suggested. Your shadows are off to a great start! They are just too dark and too shapeless at the moment.

I would also make sure that your subject and background are well matched (size-wise). The second horse (the bay on the wood pier) stands out the most for me. He is pretty tiny, compared to the wood planks. :)
Otherwise, you do a pretty good job of finding stock with decent matching lighting/coloration to your backgrounds. Keep practicing! So many things come from just trying new things. <3 You are on your way. |
