The way I highlight is you open a new layer, name it highlights, duh lol. Then take your paintbrush with a really light off white that's almost white. Size 1, 100% opacity. Go over the horse and paint over areas that would typically be highlighted such as cheekbones, hips, chest, etc. Don't fully paint them in, just concentrated zig-zags. Then take your smudge tool, around size 12, 75% opacity, and go over and smudge the highlights. This way you don't excessively smudge the horse since you're on a new layer :) |

Is exactly what I do. I create a highlights, lowlights, hair and other details I draw on, on a new layer. :)
